STOVEPIPE-DRUM.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that l, FREDERICK JAMES Tueur, citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Forks, in the county ot Grand lliorks and State ot North Dakota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stovepipe-Drums, ot' which the following" ing part of this specification: Figure l isa vertical section illustrative otI my novel construction of heating drum. The drum A ot my novel construction is formed of sheet-metal suitable to its purpose, cylindrical in shape, and is provided with lower and upper openings (t and b, surrounded by flanges c and (l respectively; the lower tiange c being designed to be fitted over the collar usually ,provided on top otl a stove around the opening through which the products of combustion pass, and the flange I being designedfor the connection ot an ordinaryr smoke pipe or uptake. The stove and uptake vor smoke-pipe mentioned forni no part of my invention, and I have therefore deemed it unnecessary to illustrate the sanie.'
In the drum A and at about/its middle is fixed in suitable manner an apertu'red bathe plate or flame sheet B, which is ot a size to occupy about one-halt of the interior of the drum, as will Vbe understood by reference to Figs. l and 2. Through the aperture e of the tiame sheet or baliie plate B extends the air flue C of the device. The said air flue' is of oblong form in cross-section, Fig. 2, and in. the direction ot its length itpdescribes an obtuse angle; the apex of the angle being disposed in the aperture e ot' the plate or sheet B, and with its outer points adjacent the wall of the drum A. Connected through the medium of the col-r lar f with the lower end of the flue C, is a tube D that extends to a point adjacent the floor L of an apartment, and is open at its lower end, while connected through the medium of the collar g With the upper end of the flue C is Va tube E. This latter may open into the apartment in which the drum A 1s located, as illustrated, vor it' preferred said tube E may be carried 'up to a register in an apartment above the one inY Which is' the drum A. Tn the practical operation of my improve-.-
ment the flames, smoke and other products of combustion from the stove enter the drum' A'through the opening a and in passingy upward in the drum strike the lower half of the tiue C at an angle and pass upward and around said portion of the flue, until'said products bring up against the plate or sheet B. This latter is located above and in thesame vertical plane as the opening (1 and its otice is to retard and change the course of the products of combustion so that after bringing up against the plate or sheet the' products of combustion will be deflected to the opposite side of the drum, With reference to the plate or sheet, and passing the ,same will move upward against the upper that a portion of the heat will be radiated from the drum A and the remainder of the heat will raise the temperature of the flue C and the air circulating from and to the i" 1e rior of the room through the said Hue C. lt also follows that the plate or sheetl B spreads the flames, and by so doing brings about.l the consumption of practically all the gaslin the drum A, so that substantially all of the heat Yalne in the products of combletion is utilized to heat the drum and the air flue.
lt will be gathered from the foregoing that iny improvement is simple and inexpensive in construction, and that the air tlue C lends increased stillness and strength te the drinn A, and at the saine time serves in combination with the baille plate or llame sheet B to assure thorough heating of the air from and to the interior of an apartment through the drum A, and this Without the air being contaminated by any of the products of combustion. This latter is dueto the shape of the air flue C and its arrangement relative to the drum A and plate B as specifically described.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is: Y
The combination of an upright cylindrical drinn-having air and gas inlets at its lower end and air and gas outlets atits upper end and alined specl'ively, an air flue thatV lengthwise describes an obtuse angle, fixed .in the drum and extending between'l'he air inlet andthe air outlet, and a horizontal flame sheet fixed in the drum, adjacent the middle thereof, and occupying approximately one-half of the cross-section of the drum and having adjacent the drinn Wal-l an opening thatreceivcs the apex of the angle of the air Hue; the said llame sheetbeing in alinernent with the gas inlet and outlet so that the air flue crosses the path of the gases.
