oILING ATTACHMENT FOR STREET-SPRINKLERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented .ruiy re, i912.
Appucation med may 1s, 19:11. serial No. 627,465.
, To all whom. it may courent.'
Be it known that we, R'oRnRT E. CARLTON and STUART Y. Ummm', citizens of the lnitedv States, and residents of Covington, in the county of Kenton and Sta-te of Kentucky, have made certain Improvements in Oiling Attachments for Street-Sprinklers, ot' which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improvement in the application ot oil to the surfacesof streets or roadways, which is desirable as iswell known for the laying of dust as well as for ,the hardening ot the road; and the invention consists in certain novel constructions --'l`he tank hasl an opening provided with a threaded bushing B into which screws the nipple on the connection C, suitable packing being employed at B and the nip- )le t" colinunicatin f with the main tube ("2 midway between the ends of theV latter. This main tube of the' connection C2 has suitablethreaded or coupling portions C3 and C4 at its ends-so it can conveniently be coupled up with an ordinary garden hose or with the supply pipe of a water wagon or car which latter may be of ordinary construction.,
The nipple.v ("f has longitudimtl ports l .and 2, the Jformer beingtoward the inlet end of the connection and the latter toward the discharge end and at their juncture with the main channel 3, `the passages land 2 are separated by a projecting bridge or abutment- 4 which extends slightly intothe main ,channel or passage f3 and operates to deflect or divert a portion ot the water passing througl the channel .-l down through the passage 1 into the tank, the said passage being prolonged by a .pipe 5 to a point near the bottom ol the tank so that tht-v portion of water diverted Ifrom the main tube connection will pass Aunder the body of the oil in the tank and tend to lift the same and discharge it `through the passage 2 into the main channel 3 on the opposite side of the passage'l so that the portion of oil so discharged. from the tankv will mix with vthe water passing to a dischargeno'zzle and be distributed with such water on` the surface of the street or road so that'the `Water will' serve to allay the dust and the oil can op.-
erate immediately for its desired pur ose.k f
suitable valve is provided contro ling Asupply pipe. This valve is shown at 6 as a plate pivoted at 7 so-it can be turned to wholly or partially cut off the'oil discharge passage.
ln operation it will Vbe noticed that the. passage for permitting the flow of 'Water tothe tank coperates with the valved oil n l discharge passage from the tank and with the main tube of the connection in ermitthe4 oil ldischarge passage 2 so as to regulate ithe amountV of oil permitted to flow to the 'ting a portion of the water supplie to thea."
connection to be diverted for the purpose of forcing a' corresponding quantity` of oil i and it will further be noticed that the` bridge 4 which is integral with the nipple C projects into and substantially constricts the bore oi' the connection C and operates to positively deflect a portion of thematerial' supplied at C4 down throughthe port 1 into the holder A.
We claim:
The combination in a sprinkler, of a tank, a connection having a' main tube and a nipple depending therefrom and screwing .into the tank, said nipple'having two ports extended longitudinally through it parallel with each other and with the axis of the nipple, a discharge pipe connected with the nipple and depending therefromY into tite tank and communicating at its upper end with one of the nipple ports, a valve'lat the lower end of and controlling the other one of said ports of the nipple whereby the said Amd?" `tending partially acrossend substantially -I0 nected with the depending tube whereby to valve will be incldsed within the tank when positively deflect material supplied to the the latter is applied lo the nipple but will i niain lube through the Said port and the de be exposed for manipulation when the. tank pending' lube,l substantially as and for the and nipple are detached, the said nipplef ppi-poses set forth.
having an integral projecting bridge eX- ROBERT E CARLTON I l I d T 1 p constricting the bore of thexmain tube and i I SrlURrl LULLLY projecting from the nipple beyond the inner lYitnesses: end kof and in' proximity to the-port Con- JAS. J. S. BLACKBURN,
P. L. CARLTON.
