INVENTD a seasonal-tenor smart.
i roa Be it known a. I, Va g neer, a subject of-the German Emperor residing at 12 Schar'nhors'tstrasse, Duseldo (lei-many, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Pre- .ventin the Barrels of Differential-Recoil Guns om Tilting in the Firing Position;
.elevating gear. The projectile 1s according to the amount of this play and the efliciency of the gun impaired. This disad-' i'va'ntage is obviated accord and I do hereby declare the following to be 'a'full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled ment of their center of gravity on the for ward movement, if there is any pla in the eviated to the present invention by a device whic prevents the tilting motion by automaticall connect' the pivoted parts, the cradle an barrel, wi
the fixed carri e at the commencement of the forward sli ing movement and releases them at the end of therecoil movement. The connection can be made b a double armed lever journaled in'the cra le or cradle sup guiding groove on the gun barrel, while the other arm en ages in a part fixed to the car-.
riage. At t e beginnlng of the forward sliding movement the lever turns so as to effect the engagement with the carriage. At the end of the sliding movement the engagement is released. As soon as the couphng is established, the elevating gear is ree during the sliding movement of the'bar rel, the action of the elevating gear in the stationary position of. the gun is not interfered with.

The accom anying drawings show three constructiona forms of theinvention.
Figure '1 is a side view of one construction, ig. 1. Fig. 3 is a crom section at the line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a side view and Fig. 5 an end view partly in section of a modified construct-ion. Fig. 6 is a side view and Fig. 7 a section at the line 77-of Fig. 6 of another modification.
In Figs. 1-3 a is the lower part of the carriage on which the upper part b can turn in a horizontal plane. The cradle support c is journaled on the upper part b so as to turn about the trunnions d. The cradle support a is ri 'dly fixed to the cradle e, which carries Two toothed sectors g,-with which the pinions h of the elevating gear engage, are attached to the cradle. The-center of the curves of the toothed sectors lies in the axis of the trunnions. At the side of the cradle support there is a pin i, on which a twoarmed couplin lever k is pivoted. A pin l at one end of t e lever engages in a guiding groove m on the barrel f. The other end of the lever is "forms a coupling with a part n fixed to the carriage' A groove wedge- ;shaped in cross section is. formed in J the sector shaped part 1, into which the correspondingly wedge shaped end of the lever'k loosel fits in the stationary position of the barrel. The guiding groove in the barrel consists of two parts. As soon as the pin 1 reaches the upper part of the groove in the forward movement of the barrel, the lever is is turned about its pivot and its wedge shaped end pressed firmly into the wedge shaped groove. Any tilting of the barrel and cradle is thus prevented. At the end of the recoil movement the connection is released. vThe center of the curve of the wedge shaped groove is in the axis of the trunnion, and the length of the grooves such, that for all practical elevations the coupling is maintained throughout the sliding movement of the barrel.
In the construction shown in Figs. 4. and 5 similar parts are denoted with the same reference characters. It differs from the former construction only in the method in which the coupling lever is guided. Two

rollers fixed to the barrel, of the bent coupling lever is.
as the sliding movement of the barrel ;-has
brought these rollers on to the higher par I of the bent lever is, the wedge shaped end of" from thegroove and the coupling is again and 7 an arm p, whose end lies between twov forked lever 12 attached to the bolt.
released. I In the Construction represented in Figs. 6
cheeks g, g, is mounted on the carriage a. The contact surfaces of the cheeks are-adapted to grip the arm p. The cheeks lie in a casing r mounted on the cradle e and are manipulated by a right and left hand threaded bolt 8 which can be turned by a p The lever -t is partially turned during the forward and backward movements of the'barrel by a stop a on the latter. This tightens or releases the gripping surfaces of the cheeks g, g on the arm 1;. In this way the connection between the movable and fixed parts is' first established and afterward released during the to and fro movement of the barrel of the gun.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a gun having a differential recoil, the combination 'of a carriage, a reeoiling barrel, means for elevating the barrel, means for automatically locking the barrel to the carriage independently of the elevating mechanism and means for automatically actuating said last mentioned means to efi'ect such locking during the forward movement of the barrel, said last mentioned means antomatically releasing saidlocking mecha-' nism during the recoil of the barrel.
2. In a gun having a difier'ential recoil, the combination of a carriage," a recoiling barrel, a cradle therefor, elevating mechanism for the barrel, a movable member on ing witnesses.
operating said movable member to cause it to bind against'said fixed part during the forward movement of the barrel and to re: lease said movable member from said fixed part after firing and during the recoil of the barrel. 3. In a gun having a difierential recoil, the combination of a carriage, a recoiling barrel, a cradle therefor, elevating mechanism for the barrel, a lever fulcrumed on the cradle, a part fixed tothe carriage against which one end of the lever is designed to bind, and means carried by the barrel for operating said lever to cause it to bind against said fixed part during the forward movement or the barrel and to release said lever, from said fixed part after firing and during the recoil of the barrel. 4. In a gun having a difi'erential recoil,
the combination of a carriage, a recoiling part of the groove during the recoil of the barrel acting on said lever to release it from said-fined part;
