Description
a To all atoma may concern 1 poem not ne JOHN BERRY-,1 or sun tsanotsco," CALIFORNIA.
p Letters'l'otcnt No. 103,285, (are: Moy2d, 1310.
mraovsmsm'm Massages snooze,
Be it kriown that I; Joan B'nnar, of the city and county of Sanl lanoisico, State of California, have invented certaiu new and useful Improvements in Street-railroad Oars;". andI do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descriptlop of the some, reference-being had to the aeoompanymg drawings and to the letters marked thereon.
My mvention .relates principally to improvements in the-construction of the trncks'oi' strechrailway cars, whereby thewell-known' difficulties attendant upon turnipg curves is obviated, and consists in pivoting eacli truck independently to the bottom or, platlbrm of the car, so that the trucks oalr be' moved laterally, and conform to the curvature 'oi'Ithe road by simply operating thehrake-s piridle. f
The truck, frames [extend to the cadet hoi'h' plati'orms of the .car, and are provided with a rack, theteetlr of which are engaged by, apinion' upon the make-spindle, which is forced hack againstthe plat formhy a spring when not in use, and admits of the brake-spindle being employed in the ordinary way again. i
, In the di ai$'i ngs'- l s Figure l'represents a plan of my inrcntion.
Figure 2, a side elevation.
Like letters refer to like parts;
To enable others 'skill'edint-he art or science to which it mos .nearlyappertains to make and use my invention, I \vrll procecdto fnllytdes crihe its construction and operation.
A represents the truck-frame, in which the axle D h s its hearings. .lhe frameris pivoted to the'thot'tom of the car by the pin E, and extends to the end of g lleplatfiirm, and is nearly flush with thesaid; platorm. 1 a A curved raok,1 ,is,prqvided for theend of the frame, thete'eiliz of wliich, are engaged by the pinion G on the bra spindle G, which causes thetrnokflame, and with it the wheels,'to moveright or left, as desired. I Theiendof the truck-flame rests on a; block, H, which isprovidedwith a forked arm, H, which guides the hrake-spindlcbeneath the pinion. The pinion is loose.onthespiude, and drops when l the forkcdarm is pressed down,'-a nd iscarried ba'ck again to its p0: sitionjivhen the pressure is removed fromthe arm.
The arm moves 'iuthe block on pinsl I, by pressure of the foot upon a bolt, J attached to the arm ,H', which passes up through the platform of the car, and alflat. swing-K, holds thearmvto its placeagain'st the lower face of theiblock. I j
111 operating my devicqsufiicient play is'given to the pinion and hrake spindle-to allow the pin on '30 fall by pressure upon the bolt, in order toengage in the teeth of the rack at theend of the truck frame, when, by turning the" brake'spindle to the right or left, the frameis moved, and with it the wheels, at t-he desired angle, according to the direction of the curve of the track, and, when the pressure is removed from'the bolt, the arm flies hack to, its position against thebloolglhy means of 'the spring, :and carries with it the pinion, when the brake-spindle may he employed as usual to stop the car, for it is not intended that the position of the pinion on the spindle -sl |al,l intcrfere with its pelfect working inthe capacityof a brakespindle. t a
If'the block in which 'n|eend of thejtrnck-l'rame moves and-pirhich supports it should not he found sufficient, slots may bemade in the frame, andmove on other supports or bolts', v'ith heads, attached to the lmttQm of thevcar. I I
My improvement will 'also'he found a great auxiliary in getting the car hawk upon the hack, after it has been thrown off. k I t I am aware thatvarions attempts .har'e hcen made to obviate the. diliieultiesattendant upon turning curves with cars on strect-railwaysby dii'idlngthc' axles and the use of box-couplings, or bythe employment of an independent wheel to overcome the sliding process or friction oi' the fixed wheels. and of other devices too numerous to mention in tl1is connection; but none, I believe, have been found so efficient for the purpose as my own invention.
Hayingz' thus described my invention,
7 What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Iatent,is--.- ,4 1. The rack F at the end of the frame, and pinion G attached to the brake-spindle, so L that, by operating the said brake-spindle, the position of the truckflameand wheels canbe changed from left to'right or right to left',.suhstant ially as and for the purpose specifie l t 2. The forked arm H, whiohguides'the lower end ofthe brake-spindle moving on the=pins I I in the block H, substantially as" described.
4. The spring K, for -holding-the arm against the block H, and the foot-bolt J, passing out through the platform for; pressing down the arm,'suhstantially as described- Intestimony whereof I have hereunto set my-hand and-seal. a p v JOHN BERRY. [as] Withesseszx 0. W.,M. SMITH,
