To all whmn it comma:
4 Be it known that I, Mam) HALA'sz, asubject oi. the Kin of Hungary, and residing at- 5 S zputca, machine constructor, have invented certam new and useful Improvements in Drop-Win-- dows, of which thefollowing is a 'specifi cation. e
' frame.
sash bytmeans of a spring pressed This invention relates to windows, the
sashes of a which are adapted to be low-- ered to open, and to be raised to close, andfurther-when in the raised position, are
. 6 and also protected by a plate pressed forward onto the packingv stri mounted upon the window case,.-correspon ing with t e. outei surfaces of the sliding pressing frame, the sash being automatically kept clear from the packing strip when it is being moved up or down by means of a metal platethe'- shape of a U having one of its arms elongated.mounted upon the sash and adapted to slide upon a flangedmetal plate carried upon the spring pressed pressing In these wm'dows'as hitherto arranged, in order to fit the metal parts, the window case required double rabbetmg which considerably weakens the same, and necessitates the frame work being constructed-u on a larger scale. These metal plates w en made of iron are liable to rust and so cause the-window to jam and if made of brass; or other non-oxidlzing material are very expensive.
The object of this invention is to overcom these disadvantages by providing upon each side of the spring-pressed pressing frame, a
single-angled flanged metal plate adapted to co-act with part of the sliding sash either directly or indirectly.
.A further object of this invention is to provide suificient clearance between the flange of the single-angled flanged metal plate and the 'sash or member upon the sash 'orthe window frame as to permit of the spring-pressed pressing frame having full play causing the window to be pressed against the packing strip when in the raised position as tightly as possible.

the spring-pressed at the upper end. v In carrying out the invention as indicated n Fig. 1, the shding sash 1 is provided in the side edge thereof with a sufiiclent dimensions torec'eive t 'e'intu'rned flange 11 ofa single-angled flanged metal "plate 4 which-is attachedto' the side-edge of. the spring-pressed pressing frame 3.
. "In'Fig. 2 t e sash 1. is rqvided with a rabbet '5 which is coveredg y pressing frame as hinged I upon the side Y gle-angled flanged metal plate 4 mounted upon the side edge of the'spring-pre'ssed pressing frame 3, liesin the oove 5. in a with Fig. 1. I Normally the slidingsash is ressed pressing frame 3 un er the influence of the spring 12 so as to exclude all draft, but -when it is desired to lower the sash it is slightly raised and pulled forward in the usual manner when the ressing frame 3 .sw
rovlded at the upper end thereof. This rings the flange 11 into contact or engage. ment with the opposingsi'de of the oove -member in the figures. 1 As the sash 1s lowstrip so'as to relieve the latter of-the usual rubbing action which occurs when lowering a window not 'rovided with the improvements embodied in this invention.
In each of the modes of carr ing out the invention ample clearance is eft between -.the flange 11 of the single-angled flanged, metal plate 4, and the opposing side of the groove remote from the pressing frame.
This application is a division of my copending application No.464,037, filed November 23rd, 1908.- p
Having now. described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to ters Patent is z- 1. In a drop window of the type deof the packing while it is being. raised or lowered and insuring that when 1n its raised position the sash is pressed closely against the packing, comprising a spring-pressed pressing frame, a single-angled flanged metal plate on each side edge of said press a metal plate ered, it is guided away from the packing STATES-PATENT OFFICE.
and this epplleatibn fled is a section of the windowfframe showing vs 2 of edge of the The flange 11 of the sinsimilar'manner as described In connection I closely against the acking strip 8 y the forward with it, a out its hinge 13, 5;
.secure by Letscribed, means for holding the sashclear the packingrwhile it is belng raised or lowered, and insuring that when in its raised position, the sash is pressed-closely against the packing, comprising a spring-pressed pressing -frame, a singleangled flanged metal plate on each side edge of said pressact with single-angled flanged metal plate upon the the sash clear of ing frame, a sliding sash having L-shaped groove in each side edge thereof, a flat metal plate for each groove placed so as to form a "-U-sha ed channel, each of said metal plates bem adapted to slide a ainst and coe corresponding ange of said sprmg-pressed pressing frame, substantially as and for the purposes set forth. v
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
