a l F IC Ea JOSEPH PETER CLEMENS, OF JEANNETTE, PENNSYLVANIA.
RAIL-JOINT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrrr PETER CLEM- nNs, a .citizen of the United States of America, residing at Jeannette, in the county of lVestmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail-Joints, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to rail joints, and the primary object of my invent-ion is the provision of simple and effective means for securing splice bars and rails to a tie without resorting to the use of spikes.
Another object of this invention is to clamp splice bars upon a tie in a manner that will prevent rails from spreading or creeping.
A further object of this invention is to provide a fastener for splice bars that is simple in construction, easy to install, durable and highly efficient for the purposes for which it is intended.
I attain the above objects by mechanical construction that will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will 110w be had to the drawing, wherein .Figure 1 is a side elevation of the rail joint. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same and Fig. 3 is horizontal sectional view of the rail joint.
The reference numeral 1 denotes a portion of the tie supporting the base flanges 2 of rails 8, said rails having the confronting ends thereof arranged upon the tie. The rails 3 are braced by an inner splice bar 1 and an outer splice bar 5. These bars are connected to the rails 3 by bolts 6 and nuts 7 in the ordinary and well known manner.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 6, 1911.
Patented July 16, 1912. Serial No. 658,695.
The lateral flanges 8 of the bars 4 and are provided with extensions 9, said extensions at one side of the tie having depending arms 10 terminating in right angularly disposed apertured lugs 11 in proximity to the bottom of the tie.
The ends of the extensions 9 at the opposite side of the tie are provided with barrels 13 and pivotally connected to said barrels by pins 13 are barrels 14. carried by the upper ends of angle straps 15, said straps extending under the tie and terminating below the lugs 11. The ends of the straps 15 are apertured, as at 16 and are connected to the lugs 11 by bolts 17 and nuts 18. The straps 15 cooperate with the extensions 9 and the arms 10 in embracing the tie 1, and this construction prevents the splice bars and the rails from creeping upon the tie.
What I claim is In a rail joint, the combination with a tie, rails having confronting ends upon said tie, splice bars bracing said rails, the nuts and bolts connecting said splice bars to said rails, of extensions carried by the lateral flanges of said splice bars, depending arms carried by ends of said extensions and terminating in a-pertured lugs in proximity to the bottom of said tie, angle straps pivotally connected to the other ends of said extensions and extending under said tie, and means connecting the ends of said straps to the apertured lugs of said arms.
I11 testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JQSEPH PETER CLEMENS.
