Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed December 15, 1910. Serial No. 597,497.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MATHEW B. SHERI- DAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at York, in the county of York, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe Wrenches and Cutters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain novel and useful improvements in a chain pipe wrench and cutter.
The object of the invention resides in the construction of a wrench of the character named wherein the adjustment of the chain will be facilitated and in which the jaw plates may be reversibly mounted so as to present different gripping faces for cooperation with the chain.
A further object of the invention resides in constructing the jaw plates with a pair of toothed gripping faces which are curved and extend in divergence from the forward end of the medial line of said plates with different radii, whereby the wrench is rendered adaptable for a wider range of work.
With these and other objects in View, the invention consists in the details of construc tion and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views; and in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wrench constructed in accordance with the invention, the same being shown in operative position with respect to the pipe; Fig. 2, an edge view of what is shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a partial longitudinal section on the line 33 of Fig. 52; Fig. 4c, aview similar to Fig. 1 showing the wrench utilized as a pipe cut-- ter; Fig. 5, a section on the line 55 of Fig. 4; Fig. 6, a detail perspective view of one of the jaw plates of the wrench; Fig. 7, a detail perspective view of the interchange able bridge pin; and Fig. 8, a detail perspective view of the detachable pipe cutter.
Referring to the drawings, the wrench is shown as comprising a pair of spaced jaw plates 10 and 11 which are secured together by means of a bolt 12. These jawplates each have their forward side edges provided wit-h teeth 13 and 1% respectively. These side edges are curved and extend in diver gence from the forward end of the medial line of said plates with different radii, the corresponding curved edges of different plates having the same radii. The rear edges of the plates 10 and 11 are each provided with corresponding recesses 15 disposed at corremedial line of said plates. The rear portions of the side edges of each of said plates are provided with recesses 16 for a purpose that will presently appear. Formed in each of the plates 10 and 11 adjacent their rear edges and on opposite sides of the medial lines thereof are openings 17. Pivotally mounted upon the bolt 12 is a handle 18 which has secured thereto one end of a chain 19 whose pivot pins project laterally of the links of said chain at each side, as at- 20. In use, the chain is passed around the jaw plates 10 and 11 so as to confine a pipe between the same and one of the toothed side edges of said jaw plates, and the free end of said chain is then passed between said jaw plates and detachably secured to the latter by engaging the lateral extensions 20 of the pivot pin in the recesses 15 formed in the rear edges of said jaw plates. The extensions 20 of an adjacent pivot pin when the chain is thus detachably secured to the jaw plates are disposed in the recesses 16 so as to position the chain in proper relation to the recesses 15 and prevent the disengage ment of the free end of the chain during the manipulation of the wrench. A bridge pin 21 is detachably mounted in alining openings 17 and is adapted to be engaged by the handle 18 during its movement in one direc' tion to effect a movement of the jaw plates so as to secure a fresh grip upon the pipe for the further manipulation of the latter.
The jaw plates 10 and 11 are provided at their forward end with alining openings 22 in which is adapted to be detachably mounted a pipe cutter 23.
From the construction previously described, it will be apparent that the jaw plates 10 and 11 may be reversed so as to present the desired toothed side edge thereof for cooperation with the chain, and as said side edges have curvatures traced with different radii, the wrench may be adapted to a greater range of work.
spending distances on opposite sides of the 1Q handle, said chain' comprising a plurality of links of a width to pass between said plates, pins connecting said links and projecting beyond the opposite sides thereof for engagement with the notches formed in the sides and ends of the plates, when the links are passed between said plates and means for retaining said plate upon said handle.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
