To all wmm 'if may concem:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER W. Bilans, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Bayonne, in the State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Foldin Boxes, of which the following is. a` spec' cation, such as will enable those Askilled vin theart to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention'relates to folding or knock down boxes and the object thereof is to provide an improved box of this class, designed for use y-tailors and others in packor other articles,
or which may be used for various purposes;
Va further object being to provide a box of the class specified, composed of top and bottcm parts which are adapted to be folded compactly together when disconnected, and which are similar in form when so folded and approximately of the same dimensions; a still furtherobject being to provide Iabox of the class specified whlch will be strong and durable, and which is preferably composed of fbroils material, such as pasteboard, cardboard or the like.
The invention is fully` disclosed in the f ollowing specilication, of which the accompanying drawin forms a part, in which the Vseparate parts o my improvement are desi nated by suitable reference characters 1n each of the views, and which;- Y Figure 1 is a plan view of a blank from which the top part of my vimproved box is' formed; Fig. 2, a similar view of a blank box is formed; Fig. 3, a plan view of one end portion of the top part of the box comsimilar to Fig. 6, but showing one end por# tion of the bottom part of the box; Fig. 9 a view similar toy Fig. 7 ofthe construction shown inFig. 8; Fig. 1`0a horizontal sec-` port-ionfof the box complete; Fig..`11 a section on Stheline 11-11 of Fig.'
tion of one end 3; Fig. 12' a section on the line 12-12 of Fig. 1l, and Fig. 13 a sectional detailed view on the line 13-13 of Fig. 4.
In Fig. l I have shown a blank from which the top part of the box is formed,
gular parts a?, and the end portions a3 are scored at a defining rectangular end portions a, and between the end portions a of the folding end members as, and the foldmg side memllelr a2 are trllansverse slits or openings a1. ormln' g t e top part of the box from the blank shown in Fig. 1, the triangular end portions a of the folding end members as are folded inside the `end portions of the folding side members a2, as clearly shown in Figs. 6 and 11, and the upper outer corner portions a. thereof are secured to the triangular end portions a7 of the folding side members, this connection being preferably made by means of Wire staplesa, but said connection may be made 1n any desired manner. This leaves the lower triangular portions als of the parts a free, as will be readil understood. With this construction, the folding side members a2 and end members a3 of thetop of the box may be folded flat on the body a, as clearly indicated n F 6 and 7 and in this operation, the end portions of the folding side members a2 fold inwardly on the score or folding lines a", while the bottom inner portions al3 of the end portions a of the folding end members a3 fold inwardly and lie flat on the said folding members a3, as will be readily understood'and as clearly indicated in Figs. 6 and 7.
When the parts or folding side members a2 and end members a3 are opened up so as to prepare the top of the box for use, the lower inner corner portions a13 of the end portions a9 -of the folding end members as, swing outwardly over the body a and the bottom edges thereof enter the grooves a5 as clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 12, and said parts a or the bottom inner edges thereofy form a lock to hold the separate parts 'of the top of the box in proper form. Y
The bottom part of the box is,formed .from a blank, comprising a body portion b, folding side members b2, and folding end members b3, and between the body b and side members b2 are score or folding lines ends of the sides a2.
ing end portions bs of the side members b2 overlap the folding end portions b3, and are separated from said folding end ortions by slits or openings 61. The foldln'g of the blank to form thebottom part of the box is the same as the folding of the blank to form the top part thereof, and in this operation wire staples 511 are' employed to secure the upper inner corners ofthe parts bs, the lower or inner corners Z212 of said parts being left free. With this construction of the bottom part of the box, the side members b2 and end members b3, may be folded inwardly onto the body b as shown in Figs. 8 and 9, and in this operation the end members b3 fold inwardly on the -score lines b and the end parts bs of the folding side members b2 fit snugly on or under the ends of the said side members, as clearly shown in Figs. 8 and 9, and when the folding side members b2 and end members b3 are raised so as to open up the bottom part of the box and put it into condition for use. the lower inner corners blz of the parts b slide out over the body b, and the lower edges thereof enter the' grooves b, said grooves, in cross section, being the same as the grooves a5 in the body a of the top of the box and thus the parts b9 form locks to hold the folding side and end portions ofthe bottom part of the box in upright position.
When the top and bottom parts of the box are constructed as shown and described, thefolding side members of the toppart of thebox are reinforced "at the ends thereof by the parts a, and the folding lend mem bers of the bottom part of the box are reinforced at the ends thereof by the parts bs, and this forms a doublereinforcement for all corners of the box as will be readily understood. The said parts a9 and bs form locks which operate in connection with the grooves a5 and b5, to hold the separate parts of the box in proper form at all times.
From the drawing and foregoing description, it will be seen that the blanks,` from which the top and bottom parts of the box are constructed, are both exactly rectangular in form and the opposite edges thereof are parallel and by reason of this fact there will be no waste of material in the manufacture of my improved box and said box may be made at the lowest possible cost.
, Having fully described my what I claim as new, and deslre to secure by Letters Patent, is:-
1. A knockdown box' member composed of a blank which is rectangular in form and the opposite edges of which are parallel, said ,blank comprising a rectangular body portion, a pair of folding side members and a air of folding end members, said blank being also provided between the body thereof and one air of folding members with parallel scorlngs, forming folding lines and locking grooves, said pair of folding members being also provided at the ends thereof with triangular folding parts, and the other pair of said folding members being provided at the ends thereof with rectangular folding parts which are folded inwardly of said triangular folding parts and the upper outer corners of which are secured thereto and the lower inner corners of which are left free and the bottom edges thereof being adapted to enter said locking grooves.
2. A knockdown box composed of top and.
bottom parts each of which consists of a blank which is rectangular in form and the opposite edges of which are parallel, said blanks being each composed of a central body portion having folding side members' and folding end members, said blanks being also provided between the `body thereof and one pair of folding members Awlth parallel scorings forming folding lines and locking grooves, one pair of folding members of each blank being also providedlat the ends thereof with triangular folding parts, and the other pair of said folding members of each blank being each provided at the ends thereof with rectangular folding parts,
invention,
which `are folded inwardly of said triangular folding parts and the upper outer corners of which are secured thereto, and the lower inner corners being left free, and the bottom edges .thereof being adapted to enter said locklng grooves.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing witnesses this 1st day of March 1911.
