JOSEPH W. MoGLAUGI-ILIN, OF WEST ALLIS, WISCONSIN.
CAR-DUMPER.
Application filed April 20, 1911.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrri W. Mo GLAUGI-ILIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at est Allis, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Car-Dumpers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in car dumpers, especially adapted to be used for dumping cars containing railroad ties, the object being to provide mechanism for dumping a series of cars whereby a clear discharge will be obtained so that all danger of any of the ties remaining in the cars is prevented.
A still further object of my invention, is to provide mechanism for dumping cars which is so constructed that the cars will be looked upon the frame, in such a manner that when they are tilted all danger of the cars becoming detached therefrom is prevented.
Another object of my invention is to provide means for locking the tilting frame in a rigid position, so that all danger of the same tilting when the cars are being run on or off of the same is prevented.
A still further object of my invention, is to provide mechanism which is exceedingly simple and cheap in construction, the parts being so constructed and mounted in respect to each other that all danger of the parts becoming disarranged is prevented.
Another object of my invention is to provide exceedingly simple means for locking the cars upon the track upon the frame, in such a manner that the cars can be easily and quickly locked or released, and at-the same time will be held thereon so that it will be impossible for the cars to become accidentally detached.
With these objects in View, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawing forming a part of this specification Figure 1 is a section taken on line 1-1 of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a section taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 33 of Fig. 1. And Fig. 4 is a detail section showing the operating lever for locking the frame.
In carrying out my improved invention, I employ a suitable base, which is prefer- Specification of Letters Patent.

ably mounted on concrete on which are arranged bearings B, in which are mounted shafts C carrying gear wheels I) to which are connected suitable supports E, carrying a frame F having a track G arranged thereon, which is adapted to aline with the railroad track so as to enable the cars to be run on the track upon the frame. The track comprises rails having flanged caps G secured thereto so as to prevent the wheels H of the cars II from moving laterally thereon, when the same is tilted as will be hereinafter fully described. The cars shown are of the ordinary construction of cars used for transporting ties.
For supporting the frame when in position to receive the cars, I provide suitable stops I, which are carried by the platform J arranged to one side of the frame, so that when the frame is swung in its normal position after the cars have been tilted they will be held. in an upright position. In order to hold the frame in its position so that when the cars are being forced on to the track of the tilting frame, I provide suitable locking members K, which are operated by rods K, one rod being connected to one end of a crank lever M, and the other to the lower end of the crank lever as clearly shown. For operating the rod, I provide a lever VI which is connected to one of the rods as clearly shown so that when the same is swung, the rods will be moved in opposite directions so as to swing the locking members out from over the frame in order to release the same. The lever M is provided with a hand lever M which co-acts with a rack for locking the same in its adjusted position.
In order to lock the cars upon the track, I provide pivoted dogs N carried by shafts N having cranks N arranged thereon, which are connected together by a link N which is operated by a lever N having a handle lever N, which coacts with a rack N so that by operating the lever, the shafts will be locked so as to throw the dogs N into and out of engagement with the frame of the cars, in order to release and lock the cars upon the track, and it will be seen that by this manner of locking the cars upon the track they will be securely fastened to the track so that when the frame is tilted, in order to discharge the ties from the cars they will be held thereon without any danger of the cars becoming detached there from. The dogs are so constructed that they straddle the frame of the cars when thrown into engagement with the same, and when thrown out of engagement will lie in a plane below the track so as to not interfere with the cars as they are drawn on or off of the tracks carried by the frame. It will be seen that by this manner of operating the dogs they can be easily operated, and in such a manner that it will be impossible for the cars to move in any way after the dogs have been thrown into engagement with the same, as the flange caps of the track will prevent the cars from moving laterally.
For tilting or swinging the frame carrying the track, I provide the base A with suitable bearings I, in which is mounted a shaft 0 carrying a gear 0 adapted to be driven by a suitable engine, and said shaft carries gears O at its ends which mesh with the gears D so that when the shaft O is rotated, the gears D will be oscillated so as to carry the frame into an inclined position whereby the ties upon the cars will be discharged therefrom.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that T have provided a car dumper which is so constructed that any number of cars can be run on to the same, and locked thereon in such a manner that when the mechanism is operated so as to swing the cars into an inclined position, the cars will the locked thereon in such a manner that it will be impossible for the cars to move in any way when the ties are being discharged therefrom.
l/Vhat I claim is l. The combination with a pivotally mounted frame carrying a track adapted to receive cars, of means for revolving said frame, dogs carried by said frame adapted to straddle the frames of the cars when arranged thereon, and a lever for throwing said dogs into and out of engagement with said cars.
2. The combination with a base provided with journal bearings, of shafts mounted in said bearings, gears carried by said shafts, supports carried by said gears, a frame carried by said supports, a track arranged upon said frame adapted to receive cars, pivoted dogs arranged respectively adjacent the outer side of one rail and the inner side of the other rail of the track, for locking said cars on said track, means connecting the dogs adjacent one track rail with those adjacent the opposite track rail and means for rotating said gears.
3. The combination with a pivotally mounted frame, of stops for holding said frame in its normal position, movable looking members for locking said frame in its normal position, a track carried by the frame, shafts mounted in said frame carrying dogs for engaging opposite sides of cars when arranged upon said track, cranks carried by said shafts, a link connecting said cranks, and a lever for operating said link.
a. The combination with a pivotally mounted frame having a track arranged thereon, of parallel shafts carried by said frame, dogs carried by said shafts for engaging the cars when arranged upon said track, cranks carried by said last mentioned shafts, a link connecting said cranks and a lever for oscillating said shafts so as to throw said dogs into and out of engagement with said cars.
5. The combination with a pivotally mounted frame, of a track mounted on said frame comprising rails having flanged caps, shafts mounted in said frame carrying tongues for engaging the cars when arranged thereon, cranks carried by the shafts, a link connecting said cranks, a lever connected to said link, and a hand lever carried by said lever co-acting with a rack for locking said lever in its adjusted posi tion.
6. The combination with-a base, of shafts mounted in said base carrying gears, a second shaft carrying gears meshing with the first mentioned gears, supports carried by the first mentioned gears, a frame carried by said support provided with a track adapted to receive cars, pivoted dogs for locking said cars on said track, fixed and movable members for locking said frame, and means for operating said movable mem bers.
