To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH IRvIN HATCH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and. State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Abrasive Members, of which the following is a. specification.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvementin abrasive paper, cloth and like material, used in the form of disks, wheels and strips for grinding, smoothing and polishing, and has for its object to provide such devices, that will engage, hold or absorb the small particles of material which would otherwise be thrown off as dust from the material being ground or polished.
With these ends in View, this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claims.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, I will describe its construction in detail, referring by letter to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which a polishing disk is shown.
In carrying out my invention as here embodied, I impregnate with hot wax, paraffin or similar material the abrasive cloth or paper, taking care to remove any surplus wax which may appear upon the abrasing surface.' 7
One of the objects in applying the wax hot is that it may thoroughly penetrate the entire body of the abrasive material, makmg'the latter moisture ,proof throughout, so that even though the edges of the disks or strips made therefrom may wear away no moisture will be absorbed. a
It is'a Well known fact that in practice the polishing disks, strips, etc., which are usually made of sand or emery paper, ,throw off a considerable amount-of dust when poll'shing gold or other "precious metal, due to the fact thatthe abrasive material rapidly powders and Wears away on account of being dry and brittle and from the wearing away of the metal being polished. This throwing off and losing of the gold dust in dentistry and in the arts (work on all precious metals) amounts to considerable. By the use of my improvement these disadvantages are entirely overcome, since the coating of wax or like material which I subject the abrasive material to will make it more pliable and less likely to crack, and acts as a lubricant, and also prevents to a large extent the powdering and falling off of the sand or emery, likewise the dust which would otherwise arise from the metal being polished adheres to the surface of the abrasive material and becomes embedded in the coating of wax, so that not only is the abrasive material made more durable and will perform its work for a greater length of time, but the gold dust is all retained and may be readily reclaimed by smelting or any other Well known process.
While my invention is especially adapted and valuable for polishing disks, strips, etc.,
'for dental use, and in the arts, on account of the value of the mat'erialgold--op'erated upon, it is also desirable for many other classes of grinding and polishing, and especially where the dust arising from the work is a serious objection, since when a grinding or polishing wheel is made in'accordance with my improvement, all of the dust will be absorbed and held upon the wheel.
One of the advantages of my improvement for dental polishing disks is the application of the wax makes the latter m0isture proof and therefore prevents it from absorbing moisture from the mouth of the person operated upon and also enables the operator to grind and polish work in presence of moisture. I
Having thus fully described my invention, whatI claim as nw and useful, is-
1. An abrading member having a sheet or fabric back, a gritty or abrading substance secured directly to the back and forming thereupon an abrading surface and a coating of wax-like material on the abrading surface of the member.
