To all whom it may concern: 1
Be it known that I, ARTHUR B. lVENiNK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Registers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part thereof.
This invention relates to registers which are used to control the passage of hot air from hot air furnaces and the like into apartments, and to control ventilation openings, etc., leading from apartments, and the purpose of the invention is to provide a register which while being of a general rectangular shape may be placed with its longer dimension either horizontally or vertically, an operating member being provided of a character adapted to move the damper of the register in whatever position it is placed, and the damper of the register being provided with changeable hinge members or pintles so that the damper can be swung either from its side or its end.
This invention also comprises specific structural features which will be more fully described hereafter.
Referring to the drawings which accompany this specification and form a part thereof, which drawings illustrate an embodiment of this invention and on which drawings the same reference characters are used to designate the same elements wherever they may appear in each of the several figures, Figure 1 is an elevation of a register; Fig. 2 is an elevation of the register as viewed from the rear; Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line a-a, of Fig. 2, looking in the direction indicated by the arrows; and Fig. 4 is an elevation of the cam memher and associated parts on the section line Z b, of Fig. 2, looking in the directon indicated by the arrows.
Referring specifically to the drawings, the
numeral 1 designates the grille plate which is commonly used with registers, 2 the foursided register frame provided with lugs 3 and 4 adapted to receive screws 5 and 6 to secure the grille to the frame in the ordinary manner. The frame is provided with apertures 7 8 and 9, through which wires or hinge or pintle members 10 and 11 are adapted to project to hinge the damper 12 to the frame. illustrated, sheet metal is employed to form the damper and the damper at one end is turned over to form a false wire edge 13, and is also turned over on an adjacent side to form a false wire edge 14. The apertures 7 and 9 are in alinement with each other, and the aperture 8 is situated close to the side 15 of the register frame, but far enough away from said side so that the damper can easily swing on its supporting wires. The aperture 9 when viewed in alinement with the aperture 7 is substantially circular in cross section so that the wire or pivot 11 can revolve freely therein, but this aperture 9 is preferably a hole bored diagonally through the side 15 of the frame 2, as clearly shown by Fig. 3 of the drawings, so that the dam- "per 12 may swing outwardly when the wire 10 is placed in the aperture 8 and within the false wire edge 14 of the damper, as shown by Fig. 2 of the drawings. In order to prevent the damper becoming disconnected from the frame 2 when the wire 10 is removed either from the false wire edge 13 or the false wire edge 14., the end of the wire 11 is upset or headed so that it cannot pass through aperture 9, and the interior diameter of the false wire edge 13 is small enough so that the wire 11 is held firmly therein, or the wire 11 can be held firmly therein in any suitable or preferred manner.
An operating cam 16 is pivoted tothe grille lby a pivot 17, the direction of which pivot is diagonal with respect to the grille, so that the cam moves in a plane which is both substantially diagonal to said grille and perpendicular thereto, and the cam is provided with an operating arm 18 and with a slot 19. The damper 12 is provided with an aperture 20 through which the cam 16 projects, and on the back face of the damper is secured a U-shaped wire member 21 which is received within the slot 19 of the cam and which is disposed substantially at right angles with said cam. By reference to Fig. 4: of the drawing it will be readily seen that by moving the projection 18 of the cam downwardly, the damper will be forced away from the grille and then by moving the projection 18 upwardly the damper can be swung back to the grille.
The function of the slot 19 in the cam and the U-shaped wire member 21 which is received within the slot 19, are to prevent the damper 12 from shaking or rattling, which it might do in the construction shown, in which the damper is made from comparatively light sheet metal.
If the damper were made heavy so that it would not only close by gravity, but would have sufficient weight to keep the U-shaped wire member 21 always against the right hand branch (Fig. 4) of the cam member, the left hand branch of the cam member on the opposite side of slot 19 would not be necessary. By reference to Fig. 4 of the drawings it will be noticed that a part of the cam projects through the damper to the rear of the damper and that the branch of the cam between the U-shaped wire member 21 and the damper is the effective operating member of the cam for operating the damper, and that its end rests against the damper and holds the damper in its closed position.
The function and operation of the register are as follows: The damper 12 is held in any position to which it is adjusted, open, closed or partially closed, by means of a bow spring 22 interposed between the cam 16 and the ear on the grille 1 to which the cam is pivoted. The register is shipped assembled complete, as for example, as shown by Fig. 2 of the drawing, but if the user desires to set the register with its longer dimension vertically, he simply removes the Wire 10 from the aperture 8 and inserts the wire 10 in aperture 7 and into the false wire edge 13, when the damper is assembled for use in a vertical position; or the register may be supplied when shipped with wires or hinge pins inserted in both apertures 7 and 8 and both falsewire edges 13 and 14: of the dame per, the user simply withdrawing whichever pin or wire is not needed according to the position in which the register is set. The wire 11 with its headed end and the diagonal hole 9 form in effect a universal joint or hinge connection for one corner of the damper. The grille 1 being secured to the frame 2 by the two screws 5 and 6 threaded in thelugs 3 and 4 on the frame and easily accessible when the parts are assembled and the register is installed, and the slot 19 of Copies of this patent the cam 16 being open at one end, the frame 2 with the damper can be set in place in constructing or repairing a building without the grille 1, which is highly finished and apt to be scratched or marred, and which after the work is completed can be readily secured in place to the frame, or

In a register the combination with a register frame provided with two apertures in alinement and a third aperture, of a damper provided with a headed wire received within one of said apertures and a wire adapted to be received within either of the other two apertures to hinge the damper to the frame.
3. In a register the combination with a register frame and a grille of a damper hinged theretoat one corner by a universal hinge connection, means for hinging either adjacent corner of the damper thereto and a cam member for operating the damper.

In a register the combination with a rectangular frame, a rectangular damper, a rectangular grille and means for hinging a damper in the frame by either a longer or a shorter side, of a cam pivoted to said grille and movable in a plane which is both substantially diagonal to said grille and perpendicular thereto, said cam being provided with an open-ended, curved slot and said damper being provided with a member adapted to be received within said slot, said member being disposed substantially at right angles with said cam.
