WIRE-FORMING- MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it known that I, GEORGE A. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Derby, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Wire-Forming Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to wire forming machines but more particularly to the forms around which the wire is bent, and its obj ect is to provide a form in which the working surfaces or portionsagainst which the wire bears most heavily can be removed and replaced by a new portion, or can be adjusted or ground so as to present a new wearing surface to the wire.
Another object is to provide a stock or holder, upon which the form is mounted, carrying suitable means for looking or adjusting the removable portions of the form.
I attain these and other objects of my invention in the preferred embodiment thereof set forth in the following description and accompanying drawings in which like reference characters refer to corresponding parts.

In carrying out my invention I employ a stock or holder which is usually carried by a reciprocating part of the machine so as to cause the form to advance through an opening in a plate and project beyond the surface of the plate, in which position the wire is forced against the form thereby taking the desired shape or configuration. The form then recedes back through the plate, the wire which is already shaped being swept 0d the form by the edges of the opening in the plate so that the plate will be clear for further operations of the ma chine, all of which is well known to those skilled in the art of wire forming machines. This stock A is preferably formed of tool steel and is provided with an offset portion B enlarged as shown at G, the side of which latter is reduced or cut away forming a shoulder E, for the purpose hereinafter vfully described.
Extending outwardly from the face or end of the stock A and preferably formed integral therewith are the body or web portions F and G of the form which may be of any suitable shape to form the wire article desired, but in the drawingI have shown them of such a shape that a loop will be formed especially adapted to be used for hose supporters. The edges of the body portions are cut away as shown at E, E F and F In the present instance the stock is provided with a bore II which extends through the offset portion of the same, and in which is mounted a drill rod I which is adapted to fit within the cut away portions E and F, of the body portions, so as to form the central enlarged bearing portion of the form and is locked therein by a set screw J working in a threaded bore J formed in the stock.
A bore K is formed in the stock in which a drill rod L is mounted which is adapted to fit within the cut away portion F 2 of the body F, so as to form one of the bearing portions of the form, and said rod is also looked in position by a set screw lWI work ing in a threaded bore M.
Extending through the enlarged portion C are a pair of bores N which communicate with grooves N formed in the side of the enlargement C beyond the shoulder E, and in which are mounted drill rods 0 which extend through the bores, and are adapted to fit against the cut away portions E of the body portion Gr, so as to form bearing or wearing surfaces for the form. Ar-
ranged over the drill rods 0 is a looking I plate P provided with grooves P to re ceive the rod, and with a central opening P registering with a threaded bore Q into which is adapted to be screwed a locking screw R for clamping the plate P over the drill rods 0, so as to lock the same in their adjusted position.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have provided a form in which the portions that are subjected to the greatest wear can be replaced or,removed and ground, so as to present new bearing surfaces to the wire.
While I have shown and described a form constructed to shape a certain wire article, it is of course understood that the form may be constructed to shape other articles desired without departing from the'spirit of my invention, and further while I have shown wire which is circular in cross section the form may be used to shape wire of a different cross section, and that the device generally is susceptible to such modification as may fairly come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A form comprising a stock having body portions provided with grooved edges projecting from the face thereof, and rods mounted in said stock fitting in said grooves to present a completed form.
2. A form comprising a stock having body portions extending therefrom provided with grooved edges, rods adjustably mounted in said stock fitting in said grooved edges, and means for locking said rods in said stock.
3. A form comprising a stock provided with body portions having grooved edges, said stock being provided with bores registering with the grooved edges of said body portions, rods mounted in said bores fitting within the grooves of said body portions to complete the form, and means for locking said rods in said stock.
4. A form comprising a stock having body portions projecting from the face portion of said stock, the said body portions having their bearing edges cut away, and rods mounted in said stock and fitted against said cut away portions to present a completed form.
5. A form comprising a stock having body portions extending therefrom, the said. body portions having their bearing edges cut away, rods mounted in said stock and fitted against said cut away portions to present a complete form and means for locking said rods in said stock.
