Description

To allwhom. itin-cy concern; 4 l
Be it known that we,"THnoDoRE, S. D oLL and OLIVER O. SMITH, of Menallen, in the `county of Adams andi' the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain nem nd `useful Improvements in WoodLsawing Ma chiufes and do hereby declare thatthe following is a full, clear, and Vexact description thereof', 4reference'being hadl o the accompanying drawings and to the letters f reference marked `thereon making a part of 'thisl specification.
l The nat-ure of our invention consists in the construc- `tieni and arrangement. of` a wood-sawing machine,
as will be hereinafter fully` set forth,` i
. .order to enable others skilled in the art to which `ouriinvention appertalinsto'make and use the same,
we will now vprceeed to describe its construction and opeifation, `referring to` the annexed drawings, in
' which- Eigui'e 1 is a side elevation, and Eigure 2 is a plan view 'of our machine.` p l represents the frame-work of our machine, con` structed in any suitable manner ,and of the desired size. In `journal-hinten on the? frame A, at or near 4the v reau end, is mounted asha'i't, B, having a'erank,0at
each end, by means ot' which the` same is turned.
Qn the shaft B, within the frame A, ismounted a t fcogl-flwheel, D, which gearswith a pinion, a, upon a shaft, b, running parallel with the main shaft B. 4.
each end of ,the shaft b, outside of the frame A, `is crank or wheel, E, with wrist-pi n upon which a -pitri n', G, is placed, the frontend of each pitman bef ingljoined to a saw, H. 1 l
. The c 'euterbar of each saw passes through abolel or. tuortise in a block, I, which is provided at its ends witheflanges e' e, of theconstruction shown in iig. 2, so astbifit in grooves ou standards J J, which rise at theif'ontend of theframe A. A V
Theblocks I I, moving in the grooves on the standards J J allow the saws jto be raised and lowered at f willi This is'done by the following means:
" A rope or cord, f,"conn`ects the block -If with the vfront end of a lever, L, pivoted in the centerv on a post, K, which risesfrom a cross-bar, M, between the Another rope or cord, g, `passes from the rear end `QLVER ;c.`sMITH,"AND 'rHEoDoRE s. DOLL, or iMiiiiALLma,1. '1n\n\Is,rI.-`` i l VANIA.`

i IMPROVEMENT IN SAWING-MACHINES.
i The Schedule referred to in these `Letters Patent and making part of the same frame, then'toward lthe rear, and is fastened to aloose pulley, 0,.on the main shaft B. v V Y The pulley N maybe provided with ratchet-teeth, l
and on the side of thje cog-wheel D maybe corresponding teeth, so that the p'ulleycan be thrown in and ont of gear at pleasure by the movement of a lever, P,
which is pivoted on the frame A, one end encircling the pulley and theother e11d,at any A,desired point, by the ratchet-bark, as shown inthe drawing.
Bythrowing'the pulley O in` gear, as mentioned,
the front end of the lever Lwill he thrown up, raising the blocks I Iwith the saws, and, as soon as the pulley i; thrown out of gear, the sawsy will go down again onto the wood.
The Wood is placed on supports R attached ata' suitable point on the standards J, and is Vheld down by teeth or arms 'i 't projecting from a balor roller, S, pivoted between the standards J From this bar or roller an arm, k," projects, which is, by a rod, m, connected with a lever,'T.
This leveris pivo'ted to the inner side of the frame A, and is held by a ratchet-bar, 11,50 as to cause the teeth or arms 'i i to bear down upon the-upper side of the wood, and -hold it steady while the saws are in operation.
By attaching a belt to a pulley upon the lowershaft l1, themachine may be run with horse-power. Having thus fully described our invention, y What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-. j f 1.v Thezarrangement of the lever L, connected by cords f f, with the blocks I I, the-cord g, lroller N, pulley O, lever Pfand ratchet-bar 7L, for the purpose of raising and lowering thesaws, substantially as herein shown and described, l
2. VThe supports R R, in combination with the teeth i i, bar or roller S, arm k, rod m, lever T, and ratchetbar n, all substantially as and -fr the purposes lvherein set forth.
' In testimony that we claim the foregoing we have 'hereunto set onr-v hands this 4th` day of February,
