Be it known that I, ARTHUR R. I-IAvnNnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at lValtham, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Mechanism for Transmitting Motion, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved mechanism for transferring motion from one moving part to another, and is particu larly adapted to be used in that class of mechanism in which it is desired to increase or diminish at will the extent of movement which is transmitted by one moving part to another moving part.
The object of this invention is to provide a mechanism of the character set forth in which the extent of movement of one piece may be adjusted readily and conveniently and if desired may be so adjusted while the mechanism is in operation, so that without stopping the machine upon which the parts are located the movement or throw of one of the parts may be increased or diminished to any desired extent.
The object of the invention is further to so construct and combine the different parts of the mechanism that the driven part can always be brought to a given point at one end of its throw, irrespective of the extent of that throw.
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and particularly pointed out in the claims thereof.
Referring to the drawingszFigure 1 is a plan view of my improved mechanism for transmitting motion. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of said mechanism partly in section. Fig. 3 is' a side elevation of one of the levers. Fig. 1 is a plan view of the locking pin. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of said locking pin.
Like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
In the drawings, 5 is a slide to which a reciprocatory motion may be imparted by any suit-able mechanism.
6 is a link pivoted at 7 to the slide 5 and bifurcated at its outer end, thus terminating in two arms 8 and 9. A sleeve or bushing 10 is rigidly fastened to the arms 8 and 9 and has rotatably mounted thereon a sliding block 11. A locking pin 12 is mounted to slide longitudinally thereof within the sliding block 11 and has formed upon its upper end a tooth 13, the crown 14 of which is in alinement with the median axial line of the locking pin 12. The lower end of the looking pin 12 is slotted at 15 to receive the end of a lever 16 which is pivoted at 17 to the arm 9. A spring 18 holds the locking pin 12 normally in the position shown in Fig. 2.
A lever 19, pivoted at 20, may be suitably connected to any part or mechanism to which it is desired to impart motion. This lever 19 is provided with a segmental slot 21 in which is located the sliding block 11, the tooth 13 on the locking pin 12 projecting above the upper face of the arm 8 and engaging with teeth 22 on a segmental plate 23, fast by screws 24 to the lever 19. The opposite ends of the segmental plate 23 preferably rest upon upwardly extending cars 25, thus leaving a slot 26 between the plate 23 and the upper side of the lever 19, and within this slot the outer end of the arm 8 projects.
The segmental slot 21 is concentric with the median axial line of the pivotal pin 7 when the parts are in the position illustrated in Fig. 1 and preferably this position is that in which the parts are located when the slide 5 is at one extremity of its throw. Both the crowns and the bottoms of the teeth 22 are also preferably formed concentric with the median axial line of the pin 7 when the parts are in the position illustrated in Fig. 1, and it will be understood that the crown 1 1 of the tooth 13, when the same engages any one of the teeth 22, is in alinement with the median axial line of said locking pin 12.
Having thus specifically described my invention, I will now proceed to describe the general operation of the same.
Assuming that a reciprocatory movement is imparted to the slide 5, thus imparting to the link 6 a longitudinal movement thereof, it will be seen that a rocking movement will be imparted to the lever 19 and thus by said lever 19 the desired movement will be imparted to the part or parts which are connected therewith. If it is desired to change the throw or extent of movement imparted by the lever 19 to the part or parts connect ed therewith, the operator trips the latch lever 16 by pressing upwardly upon the outer end thereof and thus moves the pin 12 downwardly out of engagement with the teeth 22 upon the plate 23, or, in effect, upon pivotal pin 7 the lever 19, as said plate 23 is rigidly fastened to the lever 19. The operator then moves the link 6 to any desired position, in order that when he releases the latch lever 16 the tooth 13 may engage any desired one of the teeth 22, these teeth 22 being conveniently indexed upon the upper side of the segmental plate 23 by means of suitable letters or figures and by index lines running from the bottoms of the teeth along the top of the plate 23, as shown in Fig. 1. Thus it will be seen that as the link 6 is moved downwardly from the position shown in Fig. 1 to engage the teeth at the lower end of the segmental plate 23, the throw of the lever 19 will be increased, while if said link 6 is moved upwardly from the position shown in Fig. 1 to engage teeth nearer the upper end of the plate 23, the throw of the lever 19 will. be decreased. Moreover, it will be understood that if this change in position of the link 6 is made while the parts are in the relative positions illustrated in Fig. 1, there will be no change in location of the lever 19 caused by this relative change in location of the link 6 thereto, on account of the segmental slot 21 being curved concentrically with the median axial line of the of said link 6 when the parts are in the relative positions illustrated in Fig. 1, so that the entire throw imparted to the part or parts connected to the lever 19 willbe imparted by said lever 19 from the position in which it is shown in Fig. 1 to the position which it assumes at the other end of its throw and said part or parts connected to said lever will always be brought back to the same position at the beginning of the throw, irrespective of the extent of said throw.
Particular attention is called to the fact that the locking pin 12 is moved laterally of the teeth 22 when the change of position of said locking pin relatively to said teeth, hereinbefore described, is accomplished, and further particular attention is called to the fact that the crown 14 of the tooth 13 which coincides with the bottom of each of the teeth 22 with which it may be in engagement is coincident with the median axial line of the locking pin 12, so that in the. rocking movement which is imparted to the link 6 and slide 5, all change of relative location of the teeth 22 and the lever 19 will take place relatively to the tooth 13 and the link 6 around said median axial line of the locking pin 12 and the coinciding crown 14: of the tooth 13, this line forming the pivotal axis of the link 6, and lever 19, as they swing one upon the other in assuming difierent positions. Therefore, there will be no appreciable wear upon this point and no sliding movement of any kind relatively thereto, during the rocking of the link 6 and lever 19.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire by Letters Patent to secure is:
1. A mechanism of the character de scribed having, in combination, a lever and a link, a locking pin pivotally connecting said lever and link together, said lever having a segmental slot therein, a series of teeth on said lever concentric with said segmental slot, and a tooth on said locking pin adapted to engage the teeth on said lever, said locking pin adapted to be moved longitudinally thereof into and out of engagement with the teeth on said lever.
2. A mechanism of the character described having, in combination, a lever and a link, a locking pin pivotally connecting said lever and link together, said lever having a segmental slot therein, a series of teeth on said lever concentric with said segmental slot, a tooth on said locking pin adapted to engage the teeth on said lever, and means to move said locking pin longitudinally thereof, whereby said locking pin tooth may be brought into and out of engagement with the teeth on said lever.
3. A mechanism of the character described having, in combination, a lever and a link, a locking pin pivotally connecting said lever and link together, said lever having a segmental slot therein, a series of teeth on said lever concentric with said segmental slot, and a tooth on said locking pin adapted to engage the teeth on said lever, the crown of said locking pin tooth being in alinement with the median axial line of said locking pin, said locking pin adapted to be moved longitudinally thereof into and out of engagement with the teeth on said lever.
4. A mechanism of the character described having, in combination, a lever, and a link, a locking pin pivotally connecting said lever and link together, said lever having a series of teeth thereon, a tooth on said locking pin adapted to engage said teeth, said locking pin adapted to be moved longitudinally thereof to bring said tooth into and out of engagement with said teeth, and means to guide said locking pin to bring the tooth thereon into engagement with said teeth. 7
5. A mechanism of the character described having, in combination, a lever and a link, a locking pin pivotally connecting said lever and link together, said lever having a series of teeth thereon, a tooth on said locking pin adapted to engage said teeth, the crown of said locking pin tooth being in alinement with the median axial line of said locking pin, said locking pin adapted to be moved longitudinally thereof, whereby said tooth is moved transversely of the face of said teeth and into and out of engagement therewith.
6. A mechanism of the character described having, in combination, a lever and a link, a locking pin pivotally connecting said lever and link together, said lever having a segmental slot therein through which said locking pin projects, a plate fast to said lever with a series of teeth thereon concentric with said slot, and a tooth on said locking pin adapted to engage said teeth, and constituting a pivot.
7. A mechanism of the character described having, in combination, a lever and a link, a locking pin pivotally connecting said lever and link together, said lever having a segmental slot therein, a series of teeth on said lever concentric with said segmental slot, a tooth on said locking pin adapted to engage the teeth on said lever, and means to move said pivotal pin through said slot transversely of the face of said tooth and into and out of engagement with said teeth.
8. A mechanism of the character described having, in combination, a lever and a link, said lever having a segmental slot therein concentric with the median axial line of the pivot of said link, a series of teeth on said lever concentric with said slot, a sliding block located in said slot, a looking pin movably mounted upon said lever and extending through said sliding block, and a tooth on said locking pin adapted to engage said teeth, said locking pin constitutin g a pivot and adapted to be moved lon git-udinally thereof into and out of engage ment with said teeth.
9. A mechanism of the character described having, in combination, a lever and a link, said lever having a segmental slot therein concentric with the median axial line of the pivot of said link, a series of teeth on said lever concentric with said slot, a sliding block located in said slot, a locking pin movably mounted upon said lever and extending through said sliding block, a tooth on said locking pin adapted to engage said teeth and constituting a pivot, and means to move said locking pin longitudinally thereof in said sliding block to disengage the same from said teeth.
10. A mechanism of the character described having, in combination, a lever and a link, said lever having a segmental slot therein concentric with the median axial line of the pivot of said link, a series of teeth on said lever concentric with said slot,
a sliding block located in said slot, a looking pin movably mounted upon said lever and extending through said sliding block and constituting a pivot for said link on said lever, and a tooth on said locking pin adapted to engage said teeth, the crown of said locking pin tooth being in alinement with the median axial line of said locking pin, said locking pin adapted to be moved longitudinally thereof to move the tooth thereon into and out of engagement with the teeth on said lever.
