A suitable gear 24- is secured upon and for rotation with-the flexihle shuttit; and a chain, or belt. 25 passes over the gear and a gear 26 secured parts into a stub shaft 27 which is journaled in the guide 21, and a clutch member 28 is also secured to the stub shaft 27 and adapted to engage and cooperate with another clutch member 29, which is connected to the roller 16. When the guide 21 is in a position to permit the pinion 19 to mesh with the gear 20, the chain 25 will be loose and the record will be fed from the roller 16 to the roller '16, but when the support 21 is lowered against the tension of the flexible member 23 to cause the clutch member 28 to engage the clutch member 29 to lock the roller 16 for rotation with they stub shaft 27, the pinion 19 will be moved out of engagement with the gear 20 and the chain 25 will be tightened so that the rotation of the shaft 18 will be imparted to the roller 16 to rewind the record upon the roller 16. The specific construction of the above referred to parts and-the operation thereof form no part of the present invention but form the subject matter of an application filed by me on September 23, 1907. Serial No. 394,020, which application is a division of the application above referred to.
When the record 17 is being re-wound upon the roller 16, the suction in the air' ducts or channels 10 continues andas the openings'in the record pass over the respective openings in the tracker board, the pneumatics 13 would if not prevented be operated and thereby sound the notes as well as operate the keys. In order to prevent the sounding of the notes and the operation of the keys by the pncumatics 13 when the record is being rc-w-ound, there is provided in one of the air ducts or channels 10 an aperture or opening 30 which has communication with the outside air, and a valve 31 is provided for closing the aperture. Any form of valve may be provided for closing the aperture but the preferred form of valve comprises a member having two faces 32, 33, on the lower side thereof, which diverge from a point adjacent the center of the valve to the extremities thereof so that when.
one face of the valve 31 rests upon the air duct or channel 10, the other face will be held out of engagement therewith.
A suitable flexible member 34-, such as leather or the like, is secured to the face of the valve and extends over but is free from the face 32. The portion of the flexible member 34 which extends adjacent the face 32 is secured to the top ofthe air duct or channel 10, as shown. more clearly in Fig. 1 of the drawing, and this portion ofthe flexible member 34, serves as a hinge for the valve 31 to rock upon. The member 34 is pro vided with an aperture or opening 35 which is adapted to register with the aperture 30 in the air duct or channel 10. \Vhen the valve is in the position shown in Fig. 1, the face 32 will close the registering apertures 35, 30 in the member 3 1 and the air duct or channel 10, so that when the air ducts or channels are being exhausted the respective pneumatics 13 will be operated, but when the valve 31 is moved from the position shown in Fig. 1 to that shown in Fig. 4 so that the face 33 thereof will rest upon the air duct or channel 10,- the aperture 30 in the air duct or channel will be opened so that as the air ducts or channels are being exhausted the outside air will be drawn into the air duct or channel through the aperture 30 to supply sufficient air to prevent the pneumatics 13 from being operated under the influence-0f the exhaust.
Any suitable means may be provided for operating the valve 31 to open the aperture 30. A suitable and efficient means for accomplishing this purpose comprises a bar or red 36 which may be supported in any desired or suitable manner with one end adjacent one end of the valve 31 and the other end passing loosely through a portion 37 of the casing of the instrument. Sccured to the bar or rod 36 and adjacent the valve 31 is a'latcrally projecting finger 38 which extends over one extremity of the valve 31, preferably the extremity adjacent the face 33, and is so located that when the valve or rod 36 is in an elevated position,the projection 38 will not interfere with the closing of the aperture 30 by the face 35 of the valve.
The extremity 39 of the valve or rod which passes through the portion 37 of the casing,
is preferably threaded, and mounted upon this threaded extremity is an adjustable nut or collar 40 which is adapted to stand a slight distance from the lower face of the portion 37 of the casing when the bar or rod 36 is in its normal position. Slidingly mounted upon the lower face of the portion 37 of the caslng 1s a key or member 41, which is secured against displacement by means of suitable screws or bolts 1-2 passing through slots 43 in the. key 41 and into the casing 37. One extremity 4-1 of this key or member is bifurcated as at 45 and is provided with an inclined face 46, which latter normallystands adjacent the bar or rod 36. An operating handle 47 may be provided on the opposite end of the key 41, by means of which the latter may be adjusted to cause the inclined face 46 to engage the not or collar 40 to depress the rod 36 and cause the lateral projection 38 to engage the extremity of the valve 31 and rock the same from the position shown in Fig. 1 to the position shown in Fig. 1 to uncover the aperture 30 in the air duct or channel, the rod 36 being adapted to enter the bifurcation 45 in the extremity 44 of the key 41 and when so adjusted the valve 31 will be locked in this position by the key 411 until the latter is moved to its original position to disengage plishing the nut or collar 10. When thus released, the suction in the air duct or channel 10 will draw the face 32 of the valve 31 downwardly so as to close the aperture 30.
Any suitable means may be provided for simultaneously shifting the flexible shaft 18 so as to disengage the pinion 19 from the gear 20 to tighten the chain for re-wind- 'ing the record upon the roller 16 when the valve is adjusted to open the aperture 30. A suitable and efficient means for accomthis purpose comprises a link or member 47, one end of which is connected to the extremity of the-bar or rod 36 at 48, and the other extremity 19 engages over the shaft 18.
-\Vith this improved construction it will be apparent that when the record has been wound upon the roller 16, the key 41 may be adjusted to move the pinion 19 out of en gagement with the gear 20 and tighten the chain 25 so that the rotation of theshaft 18 a will, through the medium of the chain 25,

After the record has been re-wound upon the roller 16, the key 41 may be adjusted so as. to disengage the nut or collar 40 and the flexibility of the shaft 18 will return the shaft to its normal the chain 25 and to cause the pinion 19 to engage the gear 20, at the same time the suction in the air duct or channel will draw the valve 31 into a position to close the aperture 30 to permit the pneumatics 13 to be operated by the suction in the air ducts or channels 10.
In order that the invention might be fully understood by those skilled in the art, the details of the foregoing embodiment thereof have been thus specifically described, but
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. In a piano player, pneumatic actions, means whereby said actions may be exhausted to actuate the same, said means including an air duct having an opening to-the outside air, a valve for controlling said opening, a re-winding device, a member for controlling the re-winding device, and a slidable key cooperating with the said member for shifting and locking the member in its shifted position, said member being provided with a projection adapted to engage and open the valve when the memher is shifted in one direction.
