DRILL-PRESS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAX HIMorr, a citizen of the United States, and resident of New York city, borough of Manhattan, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drill-Presses, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a drill press wherein the drills may be ad justed to drill holes in circles or in parallel rows, or in other relative positions, at re quired distances apart,and wherein also a portion of the drills may be so adjusted or located that a relatively large number of holes may be drilled in substantial alinement.
My invention comprises novel details of improvement and combinations of parts that will be more fully hereinafter set forth and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein,
Figure 1 is a plan view of a multiple drill press embodying my invention, showing the series of drilling devices arranged to drill holes in parallel rows or in circles; Fig. 2 is a side view, partly broken, looking to the left of the line a, a, in Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a front view showing the drill sections extended into alinement.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
At 1 is a suitable base or column shown provided with a table or work support 2 which may be raised and lowered and held in set position by any suitable or well known means. Upon table 2 any desired number of columns 3 are provided, shown rising from base member 1 and located in parallel alinement and braced at their upper ends by the transverse member 1. The drill chucks 5 are car-- ried by the columns 3 so as to have adjustment radially and laterally with respect to the axes of the drills. For this purpose the chucks 5 are carried by spindles 6 supported by laterally extending arms 7 adjustably supported upon the columns 3. The arms 7 are shown mounted to slide upon guides 8 carried at the sides of sleeves 9 that are rotatively mounted upon columns 3 and may be held in set position upon said columns by means of nuts or the like 10, whereby the drills may be adjusted radially of their axes or tangentially with respect to the axes of Specification of Letters Patent.

Any suitable or well known means may be provided for raising and lowering the drill chucks by means of the handles 11. The drill spindles are rotated by any suitable means, and in the arrangement shown telescopic shafts l2 connect at 13 with the means for rotating the drills and at 14 said shafts connect with spindles 15 journaled in bearings 16 and provided with gears 17 meshing with gears 18, the bearings 16 being shown carried by brackets 19 supported upon the member 4; or any other well known gearing or belt and pulley connections may be used for the purpose. These drill operating devices and the arms that support the same may be made in accordance with the drill press disclosed in my application Serial No. 509,911, filed July 22, 1909, if de sired. The gears 18 are carried by a shaft 20 mounted in suitable bearings upon brackets 21, supported by member 4, said shaft being shown provided with pulleys 22 to receive a belt from pulleys 23 secured on shaft 24: journaled in bearings supported by columns 1, said shaft being shown as also provided with fast and loose pulleys 25.
3 indicates a series of columns corresponding to the columns 3 andsupported by a member 1 movably carried upon base 1 and adapted to extend over a base 1 that is located at a suitable distance from and in line with base 1 and provided with a table or work support 2 with means for operating and supporting the same corresponding to that provided for base 1. The member 1 at the upper end of columns 3 corresponds to member 4. The columns 3* are provided with drill chucks 5, spindles 6, arms 7 guides 8, sleeves 9, nuts 10", and the operating connections 11, 12 13 and the gearing l'f 18 corresponding to the similar parts and gearing before described.
The members 1 and 4 are connected with the members 1 and 4 by a hinge member 26 that is shown ournaled at opposite ends upon rods or pintles 27, 27 a connected respectively with members 1, 4:, and 1 1, see Fig. 3. The member M has brackets 21 supporting shaft 20 that carries the gears 18 in mesh with the gears 17 of drill shafts 12 The swinging member 1 is also provided with bearings supporting the shaft 24: having pulleys 23 and shaft 20 has pulleys 22 Shaft 24 has a fast pulley 28 to receive a belt for driving fast pulley 28 on shaft 24. Means are provided for holding the swinging drill devices 5*, etc., parallel with the drilling devices 5, etc., for which purpose I have shown a bar 29 to firmly connect the member 1 with the member l at the end opposite hinge 26 when the parts are in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Tins bar 29 may be provided with hooks 29 (F g. 2) to engage studs or keepers 29 upon the members 1, 1. The hinge 26 and keeper 29 are of such dimensions that the series of columns 3 will be spaced from. the series of columns 3 as desired, and may be made interchangeable in-size for. different classes cf work. In the arrangement shown a belt 18 to connect pulleys 22, 23, and when the swinging drill members are parallel with the drill members 3, etc., a belt connects the pulleys 22 23 and at that time a belt is adjusted upon the aline'd pulleys 28, 28*,
whereby all the drills may be simultane ously operated. Provision is also made for operatively connecting shafts 20, 20, when the difierent series of drill members are alined, as in dotted lines in Fig. 1 and in full lines in Fig. 3. This connection is represented at 30, and may be in the form of a bar having a squared end adapted to enter a similar socket 20 at the end of shaft 20 and provided with a socket 30 to receive the squared or keyed end 20" of shaft 20 The base 1 is shown provided with a rest 1 to receive the member l when the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 3, to which rest the member 1 may be secured by a bolt or in any other suitable manner. "When the parts are arranged as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, with the series of columns 3 and 3* spaced in parallelism,.their corresponding chucks may be adjusted in various positions with respect to each other, either in parallel lines for drilling parallel rows of holes, or in circular, oval or other relation for drilling correspondingly arranged holes, as for drilling holes in flanges and the like. As the arms 7 7 may be adjusted in a direction tangentially or transversely with respect to the axes of the columns 3, 3 and may also be swung to the right or left, it will be under stood that a range of adjustment for the various drills may readily be made, and all the drills may rotate together by the ar rangement of the various pulleys set forth. When the two series of drilling devices are to be placed in alinement the belt connecting pulleyso28 and 28* is removed, keeper 29 is released, and the members l and 4 are swung on the hinge 26 over the rest 1, and then the bar 30 is operatively connected with the shafts 20, 20 as shown in Fig. 3, whereby both said shafts will be operated by the belt passing over pulleys 22, 23 so that the drills will all operate in unison,
for the work upon tables 2, 2*. It will thus be understood that by a simple adjustment of the series of drills 5, 5 I am enabled to provide a multiple-drill press having various capacities for drilling either simultaneously upon the same work, or simultaneously upon different pieces of work upon the two tables, and also that when work is to be'performed upon one of the tables only the drilling devices 5- may be swung away from the drilling devices 5.
While I have illustrated a practical embodiment of my invention it will be understood thatchanges may be made in the arrangements set forth, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having now described my invention what I claim is 1. A multiple-drill press comprising a ating each of said drilling devices, a second series of drilling devices, a movable member supporting the latter separate from the first named drilling devices to have simultaneous movement in a lateral direction toward and from the first named series of drilling devices, and means for operating the second named series of drilling devices.
2. A multiple-drill press comprising a base, a series of drilling devices carried thereby, means for operating said drilling devices, a second series of drilling devices, a movable member movably supporting the second series of drilling devices in relation to the first named drilling devices, means for retaining the second named series of. drilling devices in parallel relation to the first named drilling devices, and means for supporting the second named drilling devices in substantial alinement with and all at one end of the first named drilling devices.
3. A multiple-drill press comprising a base, a series of drilling devices carried thereby, a second series of drilling devices, a hinge supporting the second named series of drilling devices upon said base, means for retaining the second named drilling devices in parallel relation to the first named drilling devices, and means for retaining the second named drilling devices in extended bly carried by the second named columns,
means for operating said drilling devices,
means for retaining the second named series of columns and drilling devices in juxtaposition to the first named columns, and means for retaining the second named columns and drilling devices in substantial alinement with the first named columns.
5. A multiple-drill press comprising a base, a series of columns carried by the base, drilling devices adjust-ably carried by said columns, a shaft, drill operating mechanism operated by said shaft, a second series of columns, drilling devices adjustably carried by said columns, a shaft adjacent said columns, operating devices operated by said shaft for rotating said drilling devices, means movably connecting the second named columns with the first named columns, means for retaining said series of columns in parallel relation, means for retaining the movable columns in alinement, and means for connecting said shafts to operate them in unison.
6. A multiple drill press comprising a base, a series of-columns carried by the base, drilling devices adjustably carried by said columns, driving mechanism for said drilling devices, members movably connected with said base, a series of columns connected with said members, drilling devices adjustably connected with said columns, driving mechanism connected with said members, means for retaining said members and col umns in parallel relation to the first named columns, a base at a distance from the first named base and alined therewith, and provided with a rest for one of the movable members, and means for connecting the operating means of said series of drills.
