Thisioperatio'n of turning the frame vis necessary,

the shoulder Z would n ot allow said frame to advance near enough toward Ythecutting-surtace ofv the. drum to cut off the second end of the pencils; but, by turniugthe frame, and by placing the shoulder d in the rear of the shoulder (l, the second ends of the pencils can befcut otl, and all the pencils are thus'cut to a uniform length. From the bottoni part of the case C extends atnbc, F,which connects with an exhaustan, so that the dust created by the grinding operation is carried ott', and prevented from annoying the operator. By these means the operationoi' cutting off lead pencils is materially simplified. No saw or iiles are required, the wood ot' the pencils is`not liable to split, and the grindingsurface ot the drum `can be readily cils are brought in sucha'cundition that a small shaving taken oit" from-their ends, after the pencils have been varnished, leaves said'endsin the required condition. v

It' desired, the cutting material may be applied to the side of the drum, or an endless belt might be lused to produce a similar eitect, but we use, by prei'- erence, a drum, as shown.

1. The clamping-frame E, provided with shoulders d d', .in combination with a guide-rail, a., and with a 'moving grinding-surface, substantially as herein shown and described. v
