JEFFERSON KINDLEBERGER, OF SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR, BY DIRECT AND MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, OF TWO-THIRDS TO BOWMAN & ROIJABAUGrI-I, OF SAN DIEGO,
CALIFORNIA, A COZPARTNERSHIP.
WAVE-MOTOR.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JEFFERSON KINDLE- BERGER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of San Diego, in the county of San Diego and State of California, have inventcd certain new and useful Improvements in Wave-Motors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an apparatus for utilizing the power of the waves, in which the mechanism is fully protected in a chamber or inclosure, and the objects of my invention are, first, to provide a simple, economical and substantial motor operated by the motion of the waves, to operate pumps, f or the purpose of storing energy to be utilized as desired for running machinery, etc. Second, to provide such a mechanism that is fully protected from the direct force of the waves, and third, to provide such a means. of construction that is very eflicient.
Wit-h these and other objects in view as will appear, my invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter described in detail and particularly set forth in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the characters of reference thereon, which form a part of this specification, in
which Figure 1 is a sectional view of my wave motor complete taken through G-D in Fig. 2, Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof, with the top portion removed, showing the inclosure in section, Fig. 3 is a front sectional view through A-B in Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a sectional view similar to that of Fig. 1, on a smaller scale, and shown in connection with an elevated storage tank or reservoir.
Similar characters of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The inclosure 1, power lever 2, rod 3, guide 4, pump 5, valve 6, pipe 7 and storage tank 8, constitute the principal parts of my wave motor. The inclosure 1 is preferably composed of concrete and is rectangularly shaped as shown and is provided in its lower front end with an opening 1 which is provided with a door 1 adapted to close said opening when desired, but which is fastened back by means of latch 1, when the motor is in operation. This inclosure is provided in its one side with a door 1 which is for the Specification of Letters Patent.

of the water.
Patented July 9, 1912. Serial No. 661,329.
purpose, first, of allowing the exit of the air from the inclosure and second, to provide a means for entrance into said inclosure when desired. Back of the opening 1 and pivotally mounted to a support 2 is the power lever 2, which is pocket-shaped as shown best in Figs. 1 and 1, and extends nearly the full width of the inclosure. It is provided on each side with a swinging door 2, the loose edges of which are adapted to swing outwardly and press against the side walls of the inclosure, and fill the space between said lever and the walls when the water flows into the chamber, and to drop down when the water flows out. The front por tion 2 of the lever 2 extends downwardly and with the sides 2 forms a pocket for confining the water which comes in through the opening 1". Attached to the floor of the inclosure is a stop 1 for the purpose of preventing the lever 2 from dropping down too far when the water recedes. On the inner sides of the inclosure are rigidly mounted stops i for preventing the lever 2 from being thrown too far backward by the action Pivotally connected to this lever 2 at point 3 is a rod 3, which extends backward and is pivotally connected to a carriage 5 This rod is guided by means of a guide 4, rigidly attached to the bottom on the inside of said inclosure. Connecting with the carriage 5 which is guided by means of guides 5 and 5 is a pump 5 which is preferably an ordinary reciprocating water pump, but an air pump may be used if desired. This pump 5, by means of pipe 7, connects with a storage tank 8 which is of a suitable size for the purpose required. This pipe 7 is provided with a plurality of check valves 6, so as to facilitate the raising of the water through said pipe 7. These check valves are ordinary gravity actuated Valves adapted to check the water from flowing backward in said pipe.
Though I have shown and described a particular construction and arrangement of parts, I do not wish to be limited to this particular construction and arrangement, but desire to include in my invention, the construction substantially as set forth in the appended claims.
It is obvious that with this inclosure or chamber being placed either along the bank of the body of water or substantially anchored along the shore so that the opening 1' will be at a suitable depth in the water at low tide; that with each wave impulse in the inclosure the water will raise the lever 2 into the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1 against the stops 1; that when the water recedes through said opening 1 ,.lever inclosure provides a substantial protection for the machinery and mechanism and that every wave impulse causes the pump to act.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is z- 1. A wave motor comprising a pivoted member provided with a hinged member on each side, a connecting rod in connection therewith, and a reciprocating pump in operative connection with said connecting rod, all substantially as set forth.
2. A wave motor compri member provided with a hinged member on each side, a connecting rod in connection therewith, a reciprocating pump in operative connection with said connecting rod, and means for inclosing said rod, pivoted member and pump, all substantially as set forth.
3. A wave motor comprising a pivoted .member provided with a hinged member on each side, a connecting rod in connection therewith, a reciprocating pump in operative connection with said connecting rod, means for inclosing said rod, pivoted member and pump, and means for conducting the fluid from said pump, all substantially as set forth.
4. A wave motor comprising an inclosure sing a pivoted provided with an opening in the lower part A of the front end thereof, for the passage operative connection with said means for pumping a fluid, all substantially as set forth.
5. A wave motor comprising an inclosure provided with an opening in the lower'part of the front end thereof for the passage of water, means adjacent thereto and in said inclosure pivotally mounted to the floor of said inclosure adapted to be raised and lowered by said water, a pump in operative connection with said means for pumping fluid, a means for conducting said fluid to an elevation, means for checking said fluid from returning and means for retaining said fluid, all substantially as set forth.
6. In a wave motor, the combination of a pivotally mounted member, a connecting rod connecting therewith, a reciprocating pump connected to said connecting rod and means for inclosing said member, rod and pump provided with an opening to allow the ingress and egress of water into and out of said inclosure, all substantially as set forth.
7. A wave motor comprising a pivoted member provided with a hinged member on each side, a connecting rod in connection therewith, a reciprocating pump in operative connection with said connecting rod, means for inclosing said rod, pivoted member and pump and means for conducting the fluid from said pump, and means for storing said fluid, all substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two V subscribing witnesses.
JEFFERSON KINDLEBERGER.
