SPARK-ARRESTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 9, 1912.
Application filed November 15, 1910. Serial No. 592,540.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DANIEL SCHNEIDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spokane, in the county of Spokane and State of Washington, have invented new and useful Improvements in Spark-Arresters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to spark arresters and the object of the invention is toso form the smoke box of the locomotive or other engine in such a manner that the sparks and cinders will have to travel a circuitous path from the smoke box to the stack, and are subjected to the exhaust from the engine.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a separate compartment within the smoke chamber which is adapted to receive the wet cinders and which has an attenuated opening leading to the stack which is guarded so as to prevent direct draft from the flues.
Further objects of the invention will appear as the following specific description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this application and in which:
Figure 1 is a sectional view of a portion of a locomotive showing the invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a detail section on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail vertical section on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawing 1 represents the locomotive boiler, 2 the smoke box thereof, and 3 the stack. The smoke box is divided into separate compartments & and 5 by a partition 6 which extends horizontally below the stack and then vertically in front of the exhaust tube 7. The exhaust tube has its upper end bent forwardly as at 8 so that the exhaust therefrom will be projected through a short flue pipe 9 which extends into the chamber 4 and forms a communicating element between the compartments 1 and 5. Projecting outwardly from the wall 6 and above the flue pipe 9 is a baffle plate 10 which is somewhat shorter than the width of the compartment 1 and also somewhat narrower than the width of said compartment so as to form channels 11 and 12 between the same and the sides of the casing respectively. This plate also coacts with the top 13 to form a channel or flue 14:, which leads to the stack. The battle plate is carried by the partition 6 and overhangs the mouth of the flue pipe 9 having its free edges 15 bent downwardly so as to deflect the smoke and cinders into the compartment 4 where the heavier particles will settle and be prevented from passing out of the flue 14 to the stack. The stack which is used in this instance is considerably larger than the stacks ordinarily used and is preferably oblong in shape.
In the operation of the device the smoke and cinders pass out of the boiler flues into the compartment 5 and pass through the flue 9 where they are subjected to the exhaust from the exhaust pipe 7 The exhaust pipe 7 is so positioned as to direct the smoke and cinders against the underside of the baflie plate and the curved outer end thereof tends to throw them downwardly into the compartment. The heavier particles will remain in the compartment 4 while the lighter constituents rise through the ports 11 and 12 and pass out through the flue 14. to the stack.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is- The combination with an engine boiler having a smoke box and a stack communicating therewith, of an angular transverse partition dividing said smoke box into forward and rear compartments, and separating the rear compartment from the stack, the rear compartment being in communication with the flues of the boiler, a horizontal flue tube carried by the partition and connecting said compartments, a deflector plate carried by the partition, extending horizontally into and having a length and width less than the length and width of the forward compartment, said deflector plate forming with the smoke box an exit flue leading to the stack, and an exhaust tube arranged in the rear compartments and adapted to direct the exhaust steam from the boiler through the flue tube against the deflector plate, said plate having its free edges bent downwardly to deflect the heavy particles toward the bottom of the compartment.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DANIEL SCHNEIDER.
