To all whom 2'25 may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM IV. ATKIN- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Facing and Backing for Dental Bridge, Crown, and Plate lVork, &c., of which the following is a specification.

My invention consists of a facing or cuspid tooth, in imitation of a natural tooth, a backing therefor, and means for firmly and durably connecting said members with each other and with a bridge, crown, plate, etc, as will be hereinafter set forth.

The invention is satisfactorily illustrated in the accompanying drawing, but the important instrumentalities thereof may be varied, and so it is to be understood that changes may be made which will come within the scope of the claim.

Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a member of a facing and backing embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a perspective view of one of the members thereof. Fig. 3 represents a longitudinal section of the device, the members thereof being connected. Fig. 4 represents a perspective view of a facing tooth to which my invention is applicable.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.

Referring to the drawing :A designates a facing or cuspid tooth made of porcelain or other suitable material in imitation of a natural tooth. On the back of said facing are the pins B, which are partly embedded in said facing and partly project therefrom at an inclination to the longitudinal aXis thereof.

C designates the body plate of a box, in which plate are formed the longitudinallyextending channels D, the same being pressed out of the wall of the same and ex tending from one end thereof partly toward the other end thereof.

E designates an auxiliary plate which is shorter than the plate C, it being fitted against and secured to the latter closing the backs of the channels forming boxes for said pins, said channels being free in the direc- Specification of Letters Patent.

tion of their lengths to receive said pins. In the bottom edge of said plate E are the scallops F which form communicating throats with the inlet end of said channels D from the exterior of said plate E. At the top of said plate is the limb G which rests on the top edge of the plate C and is secured thereto, it closing the top terminals of the channels. It will be seen that the pins B are inserted through the throats formed by the scallops F into the channels D and cemented therein. The pins occupy said channels and the cement flows around the same filling the channels and the remaining space of the box, thus tightly embracing and holding the cemented pins in the box and preventing lateral shifting of the pins or other displacement of the same, and firmly and reliably connecting the facing A with the plates C. E. as a backing, the latter then being adapted to be applied to and seated upon a bridge, dental plate, crown, or single replacement and secured thereto by soldering or other means. The pins B are disposed preferably at an inclination to the facing or backing A, so as to be enabled bet ter to withstand the stress of mastication on the same.

Among other advantages of my invention is the ease of manipulating in the mounting of the facing, and the fact that the device possesses all of the advantages of the present kind of bridge work, security in the anchorage of the facings, due to the inclination of the pins where the stress falls upon the shoulders of the pins where they oin the facings instead of the fragile porcelain of the facing, large stocks of facings from which selections may be made, the protection of the tips and cusps by the metal of the backing covering said tips of the facings and being burnished thereover, the mechani cal interlocking of the facing and backing and the facility of disconnecting said members if broken and the ready replacement of the same.
