To all whom it may concern Be it "known that I', Wrnms A. KING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Walker and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoe Polishing and Cleaning Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in shoe cleaning and polishingmachines and more particularly to'an electrically operated machine of this charaeter and my object, is to provide a machine of this character which is simple in construction and thoroughly eflicient and use- A further object of the invention resides in providing a machine formed in two sec tions, one section of which is adapted for the application of the polish to the boot or .shoe' while the other isadapted for the.

Another object of the invention resides in providing a flexible shaft which carries the polishing brush and afurther object resides in providing a cam slot through which said flexible shaft extends whereby when said} brush is rotated in the path about the shoe stand said brush will travel in a path determined by the contour of the slot.
A still further object resides .in providing a device which may be inexpensively manufactured and one which will thoroughly and efficiently carry out the purposes for which it is designed.
\Vith these and other objects in view my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and' arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claims.

Fig. .4 is an enlarged vertical section through a portion of; the device showing the clutch mechanism in detail.
In carrying out my invention I shall refer to the drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding. parts throughout the several views and in which 1 indicates a housing or frame withinor upon the base-of which are mounted the vertical posts or. standards 2 and 3 which posts are mounted on the bases 4 and 5 respectively and spaced a shortdistance apart and encircling these posts, which are sub stantially circular in cross section, are the hollow shafts or sleeves 6 and 7 respec-' tively. These sleeves 6 and 7 are respectively held in position by means of the sleevesS and 9 which are stationary on the arms 10 and 11, respectively, which are in turn respectively carried by the bases 4; and 5 and the sleeve 8 has rigidly mounted thereon a medium sized gear 12 while the sleeve 9 carries thereon an enlarged gear 13, the purposes of which will'be hereinafter more particularly described. The posts or' standards 2 and 8 have respectively mounted thereon the bowl shaped head members or the like, 14 and 15 within which members are disposed the shoe or boot stands 16 and 17, said heads beingrespectively provided with the cam slots 18 and 19, the purposes of which will also hereinafter-be described and thesleeves 6 and 7 on said posts are designed for rotation thereon by being each provided with an ordinary clutch pulley 20 connected by means of the belts 21 to a motor 22 of the usual or any desired character.v The sleeves 6 and 7 have provided on the upper ends thereof, immediately below the heads 14% and 15 the head members 23 having arms 24: thereon, and each of the latter is provided with a slot or groove 25 which receives therethrough the arms 26 and 27. These arms are formed of telescoping members the inner ends of the lnner sections of which are pivotally connected to the studs 28 and 29, respectively, carried? on the sleeves 6 and 7 and the outer ends of the outer sections of said telescoping arms have pivotally connected thereto thebearing members 30 and 31 through which respectively extend the flexible shafts 32 and 33. These shafts 32 and 33' are rotatably' mounted in the bearings 30. and 31 and ex tend respectively through additional bear; ings 34 and 35 extended from the respective sleeves 6 and 7. and in which they are also rotatably mounted and the free and lower ends of said shafts have mounted thereon the small pinions 36 and 37 which mesh respectively with the gears 12 and 13, whereby it will be seen that as said pinions 36 and 37 are rotated, the shafts 32 and 33 will like wise be rotated in their respective bearings. The opposite ends of said shafts 32 and 33 extend respectively through the cam slots 18 and 19 ot'the heads '14- and 15 and have mounted thereon the brushes 38 and 39 respectively which are disposed in the bowl shaped heads 14 and 15. From this construction it will be seen that as the sleeves 6 and 7 are rotated, the brushes 38 and 39 will be correspondingly revolved and their paths determined by the slots 18 and 19 around the stands 16- and 17 and said brushes will simultaneously be rotated through the rotation of the flexible shafts 32 and 33 so that when boots or shoes are placed on the stands 16 and 17, said brushes will contact with the same and remove all dirt therefrom as the brushes are revolved and rotated. Y
It will be seen that the brush 39 will be revolved with considerably more speed than the brush 38, in view of the enlarged gear 13 and attention must be called to the fact that a specific purpose characterizes this construction. In this connection it must be stated that the brush 39 is of the usual type used for re'voluble purposes but the brush 38 has a hollow core 40 in which is adapted to be carried a liquid polish of any desired character. This polish is adapted to be entered in the core in that end thereof upon which there is a removable closure 41 and the liquid is adapted to flow tothe bristles of the brush through openings 42 in the core, which openings may be closed by any desired means (not shown). It is obvious therefore, that this brush is for the purpose of applying the polish to the shoe and when an application of polish has been thoroughly made to the shoe, the same is removed from the stand 16 and placed on the stand 17 whereupon said polish may be caused to dry on the shoe and the shoe given the final cleaning by the brush 39.
In order to preventthe brushes from being in constant view of the one having his shoes cleaned, and further, to prevent the splashing oi the liquid polish from the brush 38 when the same is revolved, the head members 1e and 15 are each provided with an overhanging projection 43 which extends around the full path of the brushes.
A's-stated above, the pulleys 20 are clutch pulleys, each being provided with a conical clutch 'face 44 and loosely mounted on the respective sleeve portions 6 and. 7, whereby it will be appreciated that said pulleys may be constant rotation through the rotation of the member 22 without afiecting the sleeves 6 and 7 and the opposed portions 15 of the clutches are keyed, as shown at 6, to the respective sleeves 6 and 7 and are adapted for vertical movement thereon by means of the yokes 47, one end of each of which is pivoted to alug 48 carried on eaclr foot stands 16 and 17. From this construcv tion, it will be seen that as soon as pressure has been placed on the foot stands 16 and 17 by the placing of the feet thereon, the clutch mechanisms will be thrown into effective position to cause the sleeve members 6 and 7 to be rotated with the clutch pulleys 20.
In practice, one foot with the shoe thereon is first placed on the stand 16, such pressure being exerted as will cause the sleeve 6 to be rotated, whereupon the brush 38 rotating about the shoe and simultaneously revolving on its axis, will thoroughly cover the shoe with a polish. When it is thought that sufficient polish has been obtained,"the pressure upon the stand 16 is released which will discontinue the rotation of the sleeve 6 and its adjunctive parts, whereupon the foot is removed and placed on the stand 17, Pressure upon this latter stand will, as in the other instance, cause the sleeve 7 to be rotated which will cause the brush 39 toirotateabout the shoe and simultaneously revolve on its axis, which action will dry the polish on said shoe and finally clean thesame to a high state of eficiency. When one shoe has been thoroughly polished and cleaned, the other shoe may be so polished and cleaned in the manner described above.
It will be appreciated that since the pulleys 20 are loosely mounted on their respective sleeves, the machines will not normally be in operation, and in view of the clutch mechanisms whichare operated by the foot stands, it will also be appreciated that either one or the other portion of the machine may vbe in operation while the other is idle. From the foregoing, it will be seen that 1 have provided simple, inexpensive and efficient means for accomplishing the objects of the invention, but while the elements herein shown and described are well adapted to motor may be in constant operation, but as no appreciable amount of noise results thereinvention. What I claim is:
1. In a machine of the class described, the combination with a foot-rest a plate provided with a guide slot surrounding said foot-rest, and a vertical post supporting the plate; of a sleeve revolubly mounted on said post, means to rotate said sleeve, a brush indirectly 'carried by the sleeve to revolve about said foot-rest as said sleeve revolves, and a flexible shaft to which said brush is connected, said shaft being rotated from the rotation of said sleeve, and extending through the slot in said plate whereby said brush will be conducted in a predetermined path about the foot-rest. 2. In a machine of the class described, the combination with a foot-rest, a plate 'provided with a guide slot surrounding said foot rest, and a vertical supporting post for the plate; of a sleeve loosely mounted on said post, means for the rotation of said sleeve on said post, an extension arm carried on the sleeve, a guiding means for said arm, afiexible shaft carried by the free end of said arm, and extending through the slot in said plate means for the rotation of said flexible shaft upon the rotation of the sleeve on the post, and a brush carried on the free end of said flexible shaft and disposed immediately adjacent said foot-rest, whereby said brush will be guided in a predetermined path as the same revolves about the footrest.
