To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Anvil) F. GARLIN, a citizen of Sweden, and residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment- Hangers, of which the following is a speci fication, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to garment hangers, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which may be used in the manner of ordinary devices of this class for suspending coats, vests and other garments, but which is provided with means whereby the angle or inclination of the side arms thereof may be varied; or increased or decreased as desired; and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in a device of the class specified, constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification of which the accompanying drawing forms a part in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a front view of my improved garmenthanger ;Fig. 2 a sectional front view thereof, the section being on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1 ;and, Fig. 8 a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.

In the practice of my invention I provide a garment hanger a which is of the general form of other devices of this class, but which comprises two side arm members I) having head portions 6 which taken together form an oblong head open at the front, in the form of construction shown, and the separate side arm members I) are connected by a spring or elastic plate 0 secured to the bottom of the head portions Z2 by means of screws 0 or in any other manner, and which not only serve to connect the separate parts of the hanger but also serves as a spring hinge as hereinafter described.

Secured to the top of one of the head members 6 is a spring plate (Z which ranges longitudinally of the device, and secured to the top of the other head member 6 is another spring plate 6 which ranges longitudinally of, and overlaps the spring plate (Z. The spring plate d is provided in the free end portion thereof with a longitudinal slot downward movement thereof. The spring plate 6 is also provided with a large longitudinal opening 6 the side walls of which are provided with teeth 6 and the spring plate (Z is provided at the end thereof with an upwardly directed tongue piece 6Z3 which is triangular in form, the side edges thereof being inclined upwardly, and which is provided at the top thereof with a reduced neck portion (Z having a horizontal head and the tongue portion 6Z3 passes upwardly through the opening 6 in the spring plate c, and the normal operation of these parts is such, that the wider part of the tongue portion (Z engages the teeth 6 and holds the arms 6 of the device in any desired position of adjustment, and in order to change this position all that is necessary is to press downwardly on the head (Z which operation will depress the free end of the spring plate cl, and allow the neck portion d of the tongue (Z to pass freely through the opening 0 of the plate 6, and when the pressure on the head (Z is relieved the parts will assume their normal position as shown in Fig. 3, and the spring plates (Z and e will be locked together.

By means of this construction as will be understood, the inclination of the arms b of the device, may be increased within certain limits whenever desired, or said arms may be permanently held in the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1.

My invention is not limited to the exact shape of the head, formed by the head members 6 of the separate arms 6, and the yoke-shaped form of said head is immaterial, all that is necessary being to provide a head which will permit the operation of the spring plates (Z and e, and against which the collar of a coat, when suspended from the hanger, will fit, so as to hold said collar in proper form, this being one of the functions of the head portion of the hanger.

My invention is also not limited to the exact means of connecting the separate parts of the hanger herein shown and described, and changes in and modifications of these features, as well as, other parts of my improved hanger, may be made within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.

Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentis 1. A garment hanger comprising side arms having head portions connected by a spring plate secured to the bottom thereof, the top of said head portions being provided with overlapping spring plates, and a hanger rod passing vertically and movably through the spring plate secured to the bottom of said head portions and between said head portions and through an aperture in the spring plate secured to the top of one of said head portions and through an oblong slot formed in the spring plate secured to the top of the other head portion whereby said arms may be swung into different positions, the spring plates are secured to the top of said head portions being provided with means whereby the said arms may be secured in different positions.

2. A garment hanger comprising side arms having head portions connected by a spring plate secured to the bottom thereof, the tops of said head portions being pro vided with overlapping plates which are secured thereto, and a hanger rod passing vertically and movably through the spring plate secured to the bottom of said head portions and bet-ween said head portions and through said overlapping plates one of which is provided with a longitudinal opening, said overlapping plates being also pro vided with means whereby said arms may be secured in difierent positions.
