EXTENSION-TABLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented lJuly 2, 1912.
Application led March 19, 1910. Serial N o. 550,341.
To all whom '5t 'may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. JoHNsEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Harvey, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Extension- Tables, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in extension tables and especially to the type of table set forth in my prior Patent No. 907,503, dated December 22nd, 1908.
The object of the invention is to provide an extension table of improved construction and operation and the invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through the top of the table in extended form, Fig. 2, a bottom plan view of Fig. 1 with certain parts removed and others broken away, Fig. 3, a longitudinal section of the top portion of the table when in folded position, Fig. 4, a partial bottom plan view corresponding to Fig. 3 but with portions broken away, Fig. 5, a det-ail section illustrating the construction for mounting the table extension leaves, Fig. 6, a section on line .fr-m of Fig. 4, Fig. 7, a perspective view illustrating an operating lever for the extension leaves, Fig. 8, a perspective view illustrating the support for the extension leaves wheny in extended position, and Fig. 9, a sectional elevation illustrating the extension leaf support and the construction for securing certain of said leaves from lateral displacement.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawings comprises two table top portions 1 and 2 adapted to unite to form a circular table top and provided with the downwardly extending rims or iianges 3 and 4 respectively. Fixed to the top portions 2 are guide rods 5 secured in brackets 6 and telescoping two guide tubes 7 fixed to the top portion 1 in brackets 8. The free ends of tubes 7 are supported in brackets 9 having base flanges 10 slidable in grooves 11 in the bottom of top portion 2. F langes 10 are held in grooves 11 by means of securing plates 12 secured to the bottom of portion 2 and overlapping the outer portions of said slots. A threaded shaft 13 is mounted on top portion 1 and is provided with a square end 14 adapted to be engaged by a crank handle 15 forrotating said shaft. The other end of shaft 13 takes into a threaded tube or sleeve 16 secured in a bracket 17 attached to table portion 2.
A slidable member 18 is slidably secured to the bottom of table portion l by means of guides 19 as shown. Member 18 is provided at either side with lugs 20 carrying pivot studs 21 to which operating levers 22 are pivoted. At their free ends levers 22 are connected with a supporting plate 23 slidably secured by means of guides 24 to the bottommost leaf 25 of the extension leaves. Three extension leaves are provided with leaves 26 and 27 arranged one above the other and on leaf 25 when thev table is in folded position. Leaves 26 and 27 are provided with grooves 11, in alinement with grooves 11 in table portion 2 when said leaves are in operative positions. Plates 26 and 27 secured to the bottoms of leaves 26 and 27 serve to prevent removal of said leaves from brackets 9. Each of the leaves 26 and 27 carries projecting pins 26 and 27 adapted to engage 1n corresponding" sockets in table portion 2 and'leaf 27 to prevent lateral movement of said leaves when in operative positions. Brackets 28 are secured to plate 23 at either side and are slidably mounted on guide pins 29 secured to z,
the adjoining ends of guide member 18. Springs 30 mounted upon pins 31 on `member 18 and in recesses 32 in brackets 28 serve to balance the weight of the extension leaves on said bracket and prevent binding of the bracket on the guide pins. The levers 22 are connected to brackets 28 by means of links 22 which permit of operation of said levers and sliding of plate 23.
The lower edges of levers 22 are provided with cam surfaces 33, 34 and 35 and bearing surfaces 36. A spring 38 secured to pin 39 on member 18 and to pin 46 on the bottom oftable portion 1 serves to yieldingly press member 18 and levers 22 toward the extension leaves.
A lever 41 is pivoted at 42 to the bottom of table portion 1, one end having a slot and pin connection 43 with member 18 and the other end having a slot and pin connection 44 with a lever 45 pivoted at 46 to the bottom of table portion 1.
Secured to the bottom of table portion 1 is a segmental plate 46 having locking recesses 47 adapted to recieve a locking projection 48 on the bottom of lever 45; The
outer end of lever 45 is turned downwardly along the inner side of rim 3 and is provided with a finger projection 49 by means ration of table members 1 and 2, the extension y leaves remaining stationary, the member 18 will be ygiven an initial sliding movementby the action of spring -38 until lugs 2O thereon contact with the ends of guides 19, after which member 18 will normally move with the top member 1. As the table portions are farther separated rollers 51 contact with cam surfaces 33 causing the elevation of t-he pile of extension leaves until the uppermost leaf 27 comes flush with the top of the table, there being sufficient opening between the table portions. at this time to permit of this. Should it now be desired to lock the table in position with an extension of but one leaf, the lever 45 is actuated to draw member 18 so that rollers 51 will be well advanced upon the corresponding bearing surfaces 36 of levers 22. These surfaces serve as positive supports and locks for rollers 51, thus preventing depression of leaf 27 and permitting the table portions to be drawn together to a nice lit with said leaf. Depressions 47 and projection 48 serve as a convenient means for temporarily holding lever 45 in locking or unlocking positions. If more extension leaves are desired, locking lever 45 is thrown to unlocking position whereupon table portions 1 and 2 may be further separated until cam surfaces 34 serve t-o elevate the next yextension leaf 26, the first extension leaf 27 being in the meantime held from lateral displacement by the engagement of locking pins 27 with a corresponding socket in plate 12 and table portion 2 as illustrated in Fig. 9. 1f desired this leaf brackets 9 passing into grooves 11 in leaves may be locked in position as before or the i third leaf 25 may be elevated to operative position by the action of cam surfaces 35 and locked as before, the base flanges 10 on 26 and 27 after elevation.
Table portions 1 and 2 are mounted up-on I gaging tubes 7 and brackets 9. A shaft 55 oppositely threaded to shaft 13 is mounted in a bearing 56 on table portion 1 and given a threaded connect-ion with a nut 57 carried by a bracket 58 on supporting bracket 53. Shaft 55 carries pinion 59 meshing with a pinion 60 upon sh\aft 13. By this construction it will be observed that upon rotation of shaft 13 to cause separation of the table portions, shaft 55 will operate to cause movement of pedestal 52 relatively to top portion 1. The pitch of the threads on said shafts and the size of the intermeshing gears is such that the relative movement of pedestal 52 will just compensate for the movement of table portions 1 and 2 thus maintaining the pedestal stationary and therefore do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction set forth but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come wit-hin the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what 1 cla-im as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
