To all whom it may concerns Be it known that I, F REnmox A. THURS- ToN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lynn, .in the co-unty of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Skiving-Wlachines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a machine for skiving the counters and box toes of boots and shoes.
The object of the invention is to provide a convenient and durable machine for the purpose specified which is capable of being adapted to different sizes and forms of counters and box toes and which will skive the same with accuracy and despatch.
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and particularly pointed out in the claims thereof.
Referring to lthe drawings: Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved skiving machine. Fig. 2 is a plan view, partly broken away, of the same with the counter illustrated in full lines in readiness to be fed between the feed rolls and against the knife, and a counter is also shown in dotted lines in position to be fed between the rolls by another feeding mechanism. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional elevation of the clutch shifting mechanism. Fig. Ll is a sectional elevation taken online 4-4 of Fig. 1, looking toward the left in said ligure. The lnachine of my invention which I will now proceed to describe specifically consists of two complete skiving mechanisms which are actuated by trains of gears, each train of gears being driven from a single driving shaft, and the said driving shaft also actuating a plurality of mechanisms for feeding the counter or box toe to the feed rolls and knives, said feeds being adapted to feed the counter either longitudinally thereof or transversely thereof between said rolls.
In the drawings, 10 is the main frame of the machine supported upon suitable legs 11, 11.. Upon the lnain frame 10 are slidably mounted two auxiliary frames 12 and 13. Said frames 12 and 13 are slidable toward and away from each other upon guide rods 14, 14 fast to the main frame 10. Upon each of these auxiliary frames are mounted an upper feed roll 15 and a lower feed roll 16. The upper' .feed rolls 1.5 are each provided with a recess to receive that portion of the counter' or box toe which is to be skived, the portion projectingbeyond said recess being cut off by a knife 17. The lower feed roll 16 is pressed upwardly against the upper feed roll 15 by a spring (not shown in the drawings).
The counter or box toe is held in the matrix roll 15 by suitable fingers (not shown in the drawings, but well known to those skilled in the art). The feed rolls, the knives and fingers referred to and the frames upon which they are supported are fully shown and described in a co-pending appli` cation for .Letters Patent filed by me January 25, 1911, Serial No. 604,576.
A rotary motion is imparted to the feed rolls 15 and 16 upon the auxiliary frames 12 and 13 by the main driving shaft 18 which extends entirely across the machine longitudinally of the two pairs of feed rolls and is journaled at its opposite ends in bearings 19, 19 in brackets 20, 20 fast to the frame of the machine. A rotary motioi; is imparted to the shaft 18 by the pulley shaft 21 which has fastened thereto a gear 22 which meshes into a gear 23 fast to the shaft- 18. Gears 24, 24 are splined to the shaft 1S so that they can be moved longitudinally thereof, and each of said gears meshes into a gear 25 fast to the shaft 26 journaled to rotate in a bearing 27 and having fastened to its inner end a gear 28 which meshes into a gear 29, fast to the shaft 30.
The upper feed roll 15 is fastened to the shaft 30; the lower feed roll 16 is connected to and rotated by the shaft r26. The shaft 2G is journaled in a box 27 pivoted at 32 to the auxiliary frame 12 or 13, as the case maybe, it being understood that the gearing for rotating the feed rolls hereinbefore'described is practically duplicated on each of the auxiliary frames 12 and 13, and the foregoing description, therefore, applies equally to the mechanism which rotates the feed rolls at the right and the mechanism which rotates the feed rolls at the left of the machine, as viewed in Fig. 1.

The counters are fed into the machine in a direction Vtransversely thereof, as shown by the mechanism illustrated in Figs. 1, v2, 3, 4 and The counter 38 is placed upon a work-table 39 and is fed between the feed rolls, and by said feed rolls to the :knife by means of a pusher 40 consisting of a T-shaped member, the body portion 41 of which is adjustably fastened to a slide 42 by a screw 43 which projects through a slot 44 in the body portion 41 and has screw-threaded engagement with the slide 42. The arms 45, 45 of the T-shaped member each has a holder 46 fastened thereto, by meansof screws 47, 47, said holders being adjustable longitudinally ofthe arms- 45, 45 and fastened in place by the screws 47 47.

The gear-59 meshes into a ,gear 60, the gear 60 meshing into a gear'61 which is fastto a shaft 62. The shaft 62 is rotated by a,gear"63 which meshes into a gear 64 fast to the shaft 18. Thus it will be seen that the shaft 18 rotates the vtrains of gears which actuate the two pairs of feed rolls andalso lactua-tes the train of gears which rotates the shaft 57, from which a reciprocatory motion is imparted vto the slide 42, and the pusher 40 through the lever 552.
The driving` shaft 18 and the gear 64 are disconnected from the train of gears 61, 60 and 59 by a clutch mechanism illustrated in Figs. 1, 3 vand 4, the purpose of disconnecting the driving shaft `18 from the said train of gearing being to enable the machine to be run without operating the feeding mechanism for pushing the counters or boX -toes in between the feed rolls and yet allow the feed Arolls to be rotated and the counters fed in between the feed rolls by hand in order to perform the skiving operation, and without the aid of the automatic feed device embodying the pusher hereinbefore described.
The clutch mechanism referred to conc vof the machine and connected to a slide rod 67 which has ,fastened thereto at the opposite end a forked arm `68 which engages a clutch slide 69 slidable longitudinally on the shaft 62, but yprevented from rotating thereon by means of'a -pin 70 which is fast to the shaft 62 and projects into a slot 71 in the slide 69. The clutch slide 69 has ya head 72 thereon with a cam-shaped end 73 which is adapted to engage a pin 74 fast to the vhub of the gear 63. The gear 63, it will be understood, is loosely mounted upon the shaft 62, while the gear 61 is rigidly fastened thereto. It will t-hus be understood that when the .parts are in the position illustrated lin Fig, 3, the I.gear 63 will be locked to the `sha-ft 62 by meansof the pin 74 and the clutch slide 69 which itengages, as shown.
Vhen the lever 65 is moved toward the yright (Fig. 3) the slide 69 is drawn toward the right and the cam-shaped end 73 thereof is drawn out of engagement with the pin 74 so that the Agear 63 can rotate upon the shaft y62 freely.
Gages 75, 75 (Fig. 2) are provided against 'which the opposite ends of the counter 38 are adapted to bear, these gages acting to :guide the counter as it is being pushed in Ibetween the feed rolls. Said gages 75 are -fastened to pins 76 which are adjustably ifastened to the auxiliary frames 12 and 13 by means of screws 7 7 l/Vhen it is desired to feed the counter longitudinally thereof between the feed rolls in order to skive the counter lengthwise thereof, the counter is placed, as illustrated in dotted lines (Fig. 2) and the auxiliary frame 12 is moved ytoward the right and a new matrix roll is placed upon the frame 12, and the counter is fed into the machine by a pusher 78 (Figs. 2 and 4). The Ipusher 78 is fastened toa slide 79 to which a recipr'ocatory motion is imparted by a lever S0 which is ,pivoted upon 'the rod53 'and has-a rocking motion imparted ithereto by a link 81, one end lof which isjpivoted at 82 to the leYer'fSQ, the other end fof which kis-,pivoted to ythe crankin 83 upon the crank-arm 84,
`80, the other end of said link being connected to the crank-pin 86 fast to the crank- `arm 87, said crank-arm being fastened to the shaft 62. W'hen box toes are being fed, the lever 80 is connected by the link 81 to the crank-pin 86. When counters are being j fed longitudinally thereof, the lever 8O is rocked by the link 81 connected from said lever 80 to the crank-pin 83.
The gearing hereinbefore described is so proportioned that the shaft 62 is rotated once while the feed roll shaft is rotated once and the shaft 62 is rotated twice while the shaft 57 is rotated once. In feeding counters longitudinally thereof to the feed rolls it is necessary that the feed rolls should rotate twice, to feed one counter through therebetween. The reason for this diHerence in the relative rotations of the shafts 62, 57 and 30 is that when the counters are being fed inlongitudinally thereof, the feed rolls have to make two rot-ations in order to pass the entire length of the counter therebetween,`whereas when the counter is being fed transversely thereof, or when a box toe is being fed between the rolls, it is only necessary for the feed rolls torotate once dur ing the passage of said box toe or counter therebetween, and thus by proportioning the gearing so that the shaft 62 rotates twice while the shaft 57 rotates once, and t-he relative rotation of the shaft 62 and the shaft 30 being substantially the same, the desired result is obtained, whereby the counters and box toes may be fed into the'machine and the counters may be fed either longitudinally or transversely thereof, as may be desired.
The mechanism for actuating the pusher 78 is duplicated at the right and left sides of themachine, so that the counters can be fed longitudinally to the feed rolls on the auxiliary frame 12 and also to the feed rolls on the auxiliary frame 13. Then box toes are fed between the feed rolls, the mechanism illustrated in Figs. 7 and 8 is employed. The box toes 88 are placed in a pile upon the work-table 39 and a pusher 89 is fastened to the slide 79, said slide being reciprocated, as hereinbefore described, by a lever 80 and the rocking motion is imparted to the lever 80 by the link 81 connecting the lever to the crank-arm 87. p
It will be seen that the relative time of movement of the slide 42 to the matrix roll may be changed by loosening the screw 592 and rotating the gear 59 upon the shaft 57 the desired amount, and then fastening the arm 59 to the gear 59 by tightening the screw 592. This Will change the time when t the counter 38 is pushed in between the feed rolls relatively to the depressions in the matrix rolls. The time when the counter can be pushed in between the feed rolls can also be varied by loosening the screw 43 and adjusting the pusher 40 relatively to the slide 42 and then tightening'the screw 43.
The fingers 48, 48 may be adjusted longitudinally thereof to fit different shaped edges upon the counters which are tobe fed. The general operation of the machine hereinbefore specifically described is as follows: Assuming the parts to be in the position illustrated in Figs. 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, and that it is desired to skive the ends of the counter 38, said counter is placed upon the work-table, as illustrated in Fig. 2, with the fingers 48, 48 bearing against one edge thereof. The machine having been started, the feed rolls are rotated from the shaft 18 by means of the gears 24, 25, 28 and 29, and the 'counter is fed along the top of the work-table and in between the feed rolls, by the pusher 40. The same is then fed between the feed rolls and against the knife 17 to skive the opposite ends of said counter in a manner well known to those skilled in parted to the slide 42 by the lever 52 and cam 56, as hereinbefore described.
When it is desired to feed the counters into the machine longitudinally thereof, the pusher 78 is utilized, said pusher 78 having a reciprocatory motion imparted thereto by the lever 80, link 81 and crank 84. When it is desired to feed box toes into the machine chine by the lever' 80, link 81 and crank 87, together with the slide 79 and pusher 89.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire by Letters Patent to secure is:
1. A machine for skiving articles of sheet material having, in combination, a pair of feed rolls, one of said feed rolls constituting a matrix, a knife with its cutting edge projecting between said rolls, a work-support adjacent to said feed rolls, a slide, a pusher on said slide adapted to engage one of said articles on said worksupport and move the same toward said feed rolls, a lever connected to said slide, two shafts, mechanism operatively connected with said shafts to drive them at relatively different rates of speed, and mechanism adapted to connect said lever to either one of said shafts.
2. A machine for skiving articles of sheet material having, in combination, a pair of feed rolls, one of said feed rolls constituting a matrix, a knife with its cutting edge projecting between said rolls, a worksupport adjacent to said feed rolls, a slide, a pusher on said slide adapted to engage one of said l articles on said work-support and move the same toward said feed rolls, a vlever conto be skived the same are fed int-o the mal this art, a reciprocatory motion being imnected to said slide, two shafts, mechanism operativelyeoiin'eoted v'to said shafts to'drive them at relativelydi'fferent rates of speed, `a crank `on each of said shafts and a link adapted to connect either-one of said cranks to said lever. c
8. A machine forskivi'ng articles of sheet material lhaving, in combination, a pair of feed rolls, one of said feed rolls constituting a matrix, a knife with its cutting -edge projecting between said rolls, a work-support adjacent to said feed rolls, a slide, a pusher on `said slide adapted to engage one of said articles on said work-support and move the same 'toward said feed rolls, a lever connected to said slide, a Adriving shaft, two auxiliary shafts, gearing connecting said driving shaft `to said `auxiliary shafts and adapted to drive said Vauxiliary shafts at relatively different rates of speed, gearing connecting said driving shaft to said feed rolls, vmechanism adapted to connect said lever to either oneof said auxiliary shafts, and means to change the time of movement of said slide `relatively to said matrix roll.
4.
