INCANDSCENT LAMP.

To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS J. Lrrnu, Jr., a resident of `Woodbury, Gloucester county, State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Incandescent Lamps, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specitication, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section showing one form of lamp having my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the actuating devices for the gas valve and air shutter or valve. Fig. 3 is a partial sectional view of Fig. 2 at right angles thereto. Fig. 4. is a sectional plan view ofI the operating mechanism for the valves. 5 is a perspective view ot one form of air shutter or valve, and Fig. 6 isv a side elevation of the gas valve and air shutter actuating levers, and the chain pulleys therefor.
My invention has relation to incandescent gas lamps, and more particularly to lamps of the manifold inverted type, lalthough it may be applied to incandescent lamps of other types.
The invention has relation more particularly to a novel means for actuating the gas valve and the air regulating device or shutter so as to supply pure gas to the mantles on lighting, thus positively eliminating all danger of tlarebacks.
The precise nature of my invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, it being'premised, however, that various changes may be made .in the details ot construction of the several parts, wit-hout departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, as defined in the appended claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which I have illustrated one form of my invention, the numeral 2 designatesthe cas ing of an incandescent gas lamp of the type above referred to, and 3 the globe.
4 is the mixing tube, which is shown as eX- 'tending downwardly and inwardly through an opening inside of the casing 3, havingat its lower end a manifold 5, to which the burner tubes 6 are connected.
7 designates the usual inverted `mantles connected to the lower ends of the tubes 6,
8 is the gas supply pipe which is connected to thevalve casing 9 at its lower end.
10 is the valve spindle which carries a suitable valve within the casing.
11 is the gas'jet tube which is connected to the outletof the valve chamber, and iteX- tends downwardly into the upper endof the mixing tube 4 and is provided with the usual needle valve 12.
13 is the air regulating shutter or valve which is arranged to reciprocate within the upper end portion of the mixing tube 4, in the form of a hollow cylindrical sleeve which, when raised to the position shown in the drawings, is arranged to close theA air inletopening 14 at the upper end of the mixing tube. Projecting outwardly from the air shutter 13 is a pin 15 which passes through an opening in one arm of a lever 16 which is tulcrumed on the valve stem or spindle 10, the other arm 16a of this lever being connected by a light tension spring 17 with a projection extending outwardly from the valve casing, as indicated at 18.
19 is two-armed lever, which is fastened to the valve stem 10. Connected to one end of this lever 19 is a valve closing rod 20, and connected to the other end of this lever is a valve opening rod 21. Connected to the same arm 1 6a of the lever 16 to which the 'coil spring 17 isconnectedis a coil spring 22, which is considerably stronger than the coil spring 17. The other end of this coil spring 22 is connected to a closing chain 20*JL at 23.

'Assuming the parts .to be in the position shown in the drawings, in which both the gas valve and air shutter or valve are closed,
and which is the normal position for the valves when the lamp is not lighted, the

I claim:

In a gas lamp, a mixing tube having an air inlet and a gas inlet, a separate valve for each of said inlets, an operating device connected to the gas valve, an operating device connected to the air valve, and an actuating device connected to the gas and air'val've operating devices arranged in extinguishing the light to first move the air valve to its closed position and then close the gas valve; substantially as described'.
2. In a gas lamp, a mixing tube having an air inlet and a gas inlet, a separate valve tor each of said inlets, an operating device co'nnected to the gasvalve, an operating device connected to the air valve, and an actuating device connected to t-he gas and air valve operating devices and arranged to iirst close, theair valve and then close the gas valve, together with means on the gas valve operating device for retaining the air valve in its closed position; substantiallyas described.
