To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THEODORE KI-IARAs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Advertising or Display Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to fastening or holding devices for advertising or display sheets, or the like, and more particularly to fastening devices adapted for use on advertising devices of the kind disclosed in Patent No. 889,618, granted to me June 2, 1908, in which a number of display cards or elements are mounted on a traveling conveyer or belt. The use of the fastening devices is not, however, limited to advertising devices of this particular type.
The objects of this invention are to produce a fastening device of this kind which enables the advertising or display elements to be quickly and easily attached to and detached from the traveling conveyer and securely holds them in place, and which is simple and inexpensive to manufacture; also to improve these devices in the respects hereinafter described and recited in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a fragmentary front elevation, partly in section of an advertising or display device provided with fastening devices embodying the invention. Figs. 2 and 3 are elevations on an enlarged scale of the fastening device, showing the parts thereof in different positions. Fig. 4 is a sectional elevation on line H, Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a broken sectional elevation on an enlarged scale on line 5-5, Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional plan on line 6-6, Fig. 1.
Like reference characters refer to like parts in the several figures.
The fastening devices are shown in the rawings as used in connection with an endless traveling or movable sign adapted for use in street cars.
A represents a casing in which the traveling sign is contained, and which is preferably provided with a hinged glass front a. The traveling sign conveyer consists of upper and lower endless belts B, B passing around rollers C which are journaled in the casing near the opposite ends thereof and one of which is rotated for driving the conception of the fastening devicesE, which are hereinafter described, form no part of this invention and they may be of any known or suitable construction. Preferably, however, the conveyer belts B travel in guide grooves 6 formed between the front and back of the casing and strips 6 secured in the top and bottom of the casing. The belts are also preferably connected by diagonal cross straps to prevent one belt from shifting with reference to the other belt and thus throwing the fastening devices E and the signs attached thereto out of the intended upright position. 1
Each fastening device E preferably co1nprises a stationary member 0 and a pivoted member 6, both of which are made of metal strips bent longitudinally into U-shape. The edges 6 of the strips are bent over so that no sharp edges are exposed to cut or injure the sign sheet. Both of the members 6 and c are provided with end portions which eX- tend beyond the ends of the U-shaped portions of these members. The ends of the stationary member 6 are secured to the upper and lower belts B B by rivets f or the like, and the member 6 is pivotally secured, preferably by one of the same rivets which holds the stationary member. The two mem bers are so disposed that the open sides of their U-shaped parts face each other. When the member 6 is swung on its pivot into engagement with the member 6, one wall of each U-shaped member enters the space between the walls of the other member, and the end 9 of the display sheet or card D, which is folded over the edge e of the stationary member e, is gripped and held firmly between this edge and the walls of the movable member 6, as shown in Fig. 6.
In the use of this fastening device in connection with a traveling sign, only the front or leading end of each display sheet or card is fastened to the device, while the other or rear end is loose. As the belts B B and the upper and lower edges of the sheets move in the guide grooves b in the upper and lower parts of the casing, itis not neces- The above mentioned parts with the ex and reliable holding means will by any display element thereon, substantially as set forth.
2. A fastening device for securing display elements on a moving conveyer, comprising a member provided with a longitudinally grooved portion and with opposite fastening ends which extend beyond the grooved portion, and a pivoted member, said grooved portion being adapted to receive the edge of the display element, and said pivoted member having a part adapted to enter said groove and secure said element therein, substantially as set forth.
3. A fastening device for securing display elements on a moving part, comprising two members, one of which is movably mounted with regard to the other, one of said members having a groove to receive the edge of said display element, and the other having a portion which is adapted to enter said groove to hold said display element, said movably mounted member being arranged to move into holding engagement with said display element in a direction opposite to the direction of movement of said moving part, substantially as set forth.
4. A fastening device for securing a sheetto another part, comprising a metal strip of U-shaped cross section secured to said part and adapted to receive the folded edge of said sheet, and a metal strip of U-shaped cross section which is pivoted at one end, said strips being adapted to be pressed together with one wall of each strip entering the groove of the other strip for securing said sheet, substantially as set forth.

The fastening devices form a very secure for the sheets or cards and the two members thereof are preferably so mounted on the conveyer that the pivoted member is in front with respect-to the direction of movement of the conveyer, so that any friction incident to the engagement thereof with the guides or any obstruction, tends to close the fastening device more tightly on the edge of the sheet or card. Thus none of the fastening devices chance release its hold on the sheet or card While the sign is in operation. The overturned edges 6 also assist in keeping the two members of the fastening device from separating. The fastening devices are inexpensive to manufacture and are easily operated to place the sheets or cards in position or to remove them from the sign. They, nevertheless, form highly eflicient and desirable securing means for the display sheets or cards. The fastening devices can also be inverted end for end, thus adapting them to be used on conveyers traveling in either direction Without danger of being opened and releasing the sheets or cards by cont-act with the casing.
