Description

I amt swag time I Mite.
NATHANIEL onaou on BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF, WIL- LIAM T. KEEN, AND CHARLES P, STOWE, 0F SAME PLACE.
Letters Patent No. 103,071, dated May 17, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN PACKING- FOR THE :oURNAL BoxEs or RAILROAD fcARs.
"the Schedule xei'erredto in' these Letters Patent and making part 01 the slime To all whom it may concern I, NATHANIEL dVlONROE, of the city of Boston, county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain improved Material for Packing the J ourna'l-Boxes of Railroad Cars, to he used instead of ,cotton, wool, or other substances, of which the following is a specification. The nature of my invention consists in packing or stufling the journal-box with woody fibers, which may be prepared from any kind of wood, but preferably fromthat which is fine-grained and elastic, bysplit "ting or separating the fibers 'of the w0od','s0 as to form long slender threads or thin narrow "strips of the wood fibers; these, when intermixed, form a material which, while it is sufficiently soft and flexible, possesses a degree of elasticity well fitting it for the purpose of packing the journal-boxes.
It will be found, upon examination, that the use of this material possesses several advantages over those [In-the; first inst-:mce, thc material itself may be procured at a cost much less' than wool or cotton, while, at the same time, a less quantity is required.
It is also much more durable, as it preserr'esits elasticity, and does not pound or mash up like wool or cotton, thus becoming unfit to supply the oil to the'journal; hence, the journal-boxes are kept cleaner, and considerable oil is saved, which, with the substances now used, is removed with the refuse matter when the boxes are cleaned.
The journals also run much cooler, owing to the natnreof the nmterial, which. causes a freer ciroulation of the air than wool or cotton.
I claim as my invention-- Packing the ji'inrnai-boxes of railroad cars with woody fibers, substantially as and for the purposes hereiubefore setforth.

NATHANIEL MONROE.
