srarns PATENT JOHN A. WALKUP AND CHARLES W. WALKUP, 0F WACO, TEXAS.
EVAPORA'IIVE COOLER.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, JOHN A. l/VALKUP and CHARLES W. VVALKUP, citizens of the United States, and residents of Waco, Mc- Lennon county, Texas, have invented certain Improvements in Evaporative Coolers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to cooling devices of the general type described and claimed in a patent granted to John 7. Walkup and Charles W. \Valkup on January 10, 1905, No. 779,823.
An object of our invention is to provide a cooler of the type above noted which in addition to being relatively simple and inexpensive to construct shall have its parts so arranged as to permit of their quick and convenient assembly or separation; it being es pecially desired that the said parts shall be of such form and arrangement as will permit of their rapid and compact nesting together to permit of their being conveniently and safely transported. These objects and other advantageous ends we secure as hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1, is a vertical section of a cooling apparatus constructed according to our invention; Fig. 2, is a vertical section on the line aa, Fig. 1; Fig. 3, is a fragmentary plan illustrating the detail construction of certain portions of the frame of the apparatus; and Figs. 4 and 5 are perspective views further illustrating certain features of our invention.
In the above drawings 1 represents a tray or pan in which the remainder of the apparatus is mounted and said tray is provided with supporting legs 2 at its four corners. Carried by and detachably fastened to the tray 1 is an upwardly tapering framework formed by four tubular posts 3 rigidly but removably connected to the interior of the floor or bottom of the said tray and having their tops rigidly but separably connected by a cover tray 1 which has the form of a flat container. At each corner of this cover are downwardly extending projections 5 designed to fit into sockets 6 formed at the tops of the tubular posts 5. Each of said sockets usually consists of a metallic strip having its central portion spaced away from but substantially parallel with the cylindrical upper part of the post to which its end portions are soldered. Each of the posts 3 has a number of projecting pins or lugs 7 Specification of Letters Patent.

of the posts 3 a fiat plate 14 designed to lie in a plane substantially parallel with the bottom of the tray 1 and to be slidable into and out of the socket 13. The cover tray 1 serves as a liquid container and has in its bottom two upwardly flanged ventilating openings 15 usually provided with screens 16 as shown. The flanges around these openings are preferably extended to a height above the level of the upwardly flanged sides of the tray 4; as indicated at 17 andthe supporting tray 1 is similarly provided with an opening 18 through which water falling into it may be drained into a suitable receptacle or pipe.
Mounted in the cover tray 41 is a baromet ,whereby the container-19 may within certain limits be tilted on its rear edge or corner 23 so that its front edge 24 may be raised to a level immediately adjacent or, if desired, above a horizontal plane through the line of the lower edge 25 of the inwardly bent side 20.
hen it is desired to use our device a body of relatively thin fabric is placed around the frame formed by the posts 3 and its upper ends are turned over the top edges of the sides of the cover tray. 1 so as to eX- tend within the same, while its lower edges extend into the supporting tray 1. The container 19 is then filled with water and after the set screw 22 has been sufficiently extended, is placed in the tray formed by the cover 4 in the position shown; the outflow of liquid being prevented owing to the fact that the line of the edge 25 is below the horizontal plane extending through the edge 2 1. set screw 22, this front edge 24: may be so lowered as to permit of the entrance of Thereafter by properly adjusting the small quantities of air below the edge 25 and the liquid in the container 19 is thus permitted to feed into the cover tray at any desired rate, being thereafter drawn by capillary action into the fabric cover 26 down which it flows into the supporting tray 1. During its passage down this inclosing cover or fabric a greater or less quantity of the water is evaporated, thereby lowering the temperature of the air within the cooler and thus of the articles of material carried by the shelves. By proper adjustment of the set screw 22 the feed of liquid may be so adjusted that little or none of it reaches the supporting tray 1 which, as before noted, may be provided with a receptacle or drainage pipe for carrying off what liqiud does flow into it and out of the opening 18.
For purposes of shipment or other transportation, the various posts 3 may be disengaged from the supporting tray 1 by being moved laterally away from the sockets 13, while the cover tray 1 may be likewise removed from the posts by drawing these latter off of the downwardly projecting parts 5. The various shelves may then be nested and together with the cover tray 1 placed within the supporting tray 1, while the tubular posts 3 are usually of such length that they also may be laid parallel one with the other within the tray 1. The container 19 may thereafter be placed on the 3 uppermost of the shelves 10 or in the cover tray 4, so that the whole apparatus when thus arranged for shipment occupies but relatively little space. Moreover, under these conditions the various parts are so disposed that the possibility of damage due to rough handling is reduced to a minimum and as is obvious, it is a comparatively simple matter to reassemble said parts in positions such that the apparatus is ready for A use.
extending portions removably fitting said sockets; a cover removably mounted on said the aforesaid parts; and means for feeding liquid to said fabric casing.

The combination of a supporting tray having a plurality of sockets; a series of posts each having a laterally projecting portion at its lower end removably fitting one of said sockets and each formed to provide a socket at its upper end; a cover tray having downwardly extending projections placed to removably enter the sockets of said posts; shelves carried by said post; and a fabric casing inclosing the framework formed by the posts and their associated parts. p
