Description
I, Guantes H.M1LLER,
`this hearing, in connection with the cos't "the pul1ey,is such as to prevent the adoption of the niet sont am ma.
foHARLEs n., MILLER, `or BUFFALO, NEW Yonne@ Letters .Patent No. 103,69, dated May 17, 1870*.
. IMPROVED CORD-TENSION. DEVICE FOR WINDOW-SHARES.
AThe Schedule referred to in these I letfers Patent and making part ot the sama I of thecity of Bnialo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have in?A vented an Improved Cord-tensionDevice for Window- Shadcs,'o f which the followingis a specification.
My improvements relate to an old device for tight ening the endless cord orvband by which window-shades,
. attached to a roller, are'raised and lowered.
As heretofore constructed," this device` is composed 'of a slide-bar, arranged vvertically in aguide-bearing attached to the window-casing and' having a pulley or bearing for the cord at its upper end, while its lower `endis provided with a thread and thumb-screw by which t0 regulate the ltension ofthe cord...
'ihe bearings for the pulley have been formed by doubling the upper end of the slide-bar in the form of a hook and mounting the pulley within the latter on a' rivet passing through the doubled end of t-he slide, which construct-ion involves the `labor and expense of drilling orothcrwise forming two holes, and inserting andsecnring the rivet therein.'
The guide-bearing forthe Vslide has consisted of a i i sleeveafor"thepassage of the slide, projecting from a base-plata.' which is secured to the casing by screws passing through holes drilled therein. The cost of of mounting device, except to a very limited extent.
' The object ot' my inventionlis to overcome this ohjectiong' andY i The invention consistsi, First, of a guide-bearing of peculiar construction,
4composed ot' a single wooflscrew, to which is cast the. `guide portion complete, requiring no finishing or drilling of. holes, the'bearing `being attached to the casing bysimply screwing it therein, for which purpose the -l cast portion forms a suitable thumb-piece.
Second, in casting' theslide-bar with the upper end partially bent in the form of a hook with `two`short spurs or pins projecting inward, Vand in line of each other, so as to form the axis ofthe pulley by pressing therein.
In the accompanying drawingsf'the hook together after the insertionof the pulley rice, attached to a window-casing.
y FigureyIIis a view showing the form in which the upper end ot' the slide-barisjcast.
Like letters of reference designate like parts in i of the figures.
A is the slide-bar or rod;
a lthe upper or hooked portion;
al al the spurs cast therewith, in sition shownin Fig. II;
' a.2 the thread formed on the lower end; and
O the thumbscrew iitting thereon.
D is the pulley, which is inserted within the hook, and between the separated ends of the spurs al, when the bent end ot' the bar is partially closed, causing the spurs to enter theaxial hole in the pulley till their ends come in contact, thus" securing thc pulley in place, without the use or necessity ot' a rivet or the labor of drilling holes therefor.
vE is my imprmjed yscrew-bearing for the slide,- coussting of an ordinary wood screw, e, to which are cast two guide-arms, el el, with a hole, e?, in the end of each for the passage ofv theslide-bar. The ends of these arms being formed as shown in the drawings, the holes are readily cast therein, Without requiring the use of cores, the device heilig complete as iteomes` from the mold.
the separated 'pomodes otf construction isobvious, and enables the fixture to be produced at such a triing cost asto fully r overcome the objections vwhich have heretofore existed against it on that account, andy enables it to successfully compete with the other devices 'in usefor the purpose, while it is more enduring, more sure in its operation, and less liable to get out of `order than most of them.
What I claim as my invention is-` l l'. The guide-hearing E, composed ofthe screw e and guide-arms e e, provided with4 holes e, cast com plete, sinibstantially as hereinbef'orc set forth.
2. The slide-bar A, when cast with a hook, a,and projecting spurs t1 a1,`separatedfrom each other, as shown in Fig. II, to permit the-introduction of the pulleyand to form the axis thereof, as hereinbefore set forth.
CHARLES H. MILLER.
