To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JEREMIAH J. SHEEHY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Everett, county of Middlesex, and State of Massachusetts,y have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Autographic Registers, fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same.
This invention relates to certain improvements in autographic registering and recording machines in which the paper record lstrips, after having been written upon, are
drawn from the machine by hand, and which are known as hand-pull machines.
The objects of the invention are generally to produce an autographic registering and recording machine of this class which will be simple and cheap in construction, which can be readily and quickly taken apart for the purpose of loading the recording strips, and which shall be easy, quick and convenient for manipulation bythe operator, these desired objects being etl'ected by providing a frame or casing of improved construction.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan or top view of an autographic register of the type above mentioned, certain parts being shown in section, Fig. Q is a rear view, looking in the direction of the arrow 2 in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a front view, looking in the direction of the arrow 3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a side view, partially in section, looking in the direction of the arrow 4 of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a cross section taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4; Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 5, certain parts being omitted and certain other parts'being shown in a different position.
In order that the machine may be very easily and quickly loaded with the paper recording strips, an improved casing or frame has been provided, the specific construction of which maybe varied, but which, in its preferred form, and as shown, will now be described.
Referring to the drawings, the improved machine, which is of the hand-pull type, includes a casing or frame which comprises a rear end piece 2 and a front end piece 3 of any suitable material, as wood or sheet metal, sheet metal being preferably employed. The front end piece 8, for a purpose hereinafter referred to, is divided transversely and preferably about centrally to form a stationary lower part or section 4, and an upper movable part or section 5, the lower edges of the movable part or section being adapted to rest on and be support-ed by the upper edges of the stationary section 4. The movable section 5 is held in position upon the fixed section 4 by a spring presser plate 6 suitably secured at its lower end by screws 7` to the inner side of said section 4, this plate 6 having at its upper end a slot adapted to co-act with a stud S fixed in the movable portion 5, the two sections being thus securely locked together. To permit the movable section 5 to be lifted from the stationary section 4, a. push-rod or spindle 9 is vprovided by which the spring presser plate 6 may be pushed back to disengage the slot from the stud 8 and allow the section 5 to be lifted. The casing or frame of the improved register also includes parallel side pieces 11. One, or preferably each of these side pieces 11, is divided longitudinally of its length and about centrally to form fixed sections l2 and sections 13 removable rela-tively thereto, the lower edges of the movable sections 18 being adapted to rest upon and be supported by the upper edges of the stationary sections 12, as clearly shown in Figs. 5 and 6. These sections 13 are so arranged relatively to the sections 12 that they may be swung down, so that theJ interior of the machine may be easily reached. In the particular construction illustrated, these movable sections 13 are secured to the fixed sections 12 by hinges 14 on which hinges they are adapted to be swung up and down. Means are provided for locking the movable sections when they are in their raised position on the fixed sections,which means may be varied. In the particular construction shown, there is provided on the rear end of the machine, suitably secured thereto, a spring bar 15 (see Figs. 1 and 4) which spring bar is adapted to engage a pin 16 in oppositely disposed cutaway parts 17 provided in the upper rear ends of the movable sectionsl, this spring bar securely locking the sections when in their raised position.
On the top of the casing or frame there is mounted or supported in the present machine a iiat paper support or bed 20, this paper support or bed being of any suitable material, such as thin sheet metal, and forming a surface for supporting the paperstrip or strips on which the record is made. This bed or support is mounted on the machine in any suitable manner. Inthe particular construction illustrated, this bed or support 20 is formed with depending side flanges 21, these depending side flanges being integral with the support and extending downward slightly over the side edges of the movable section 5 ofthe front end piece 3 and over the upper edges of t-he movable sections 13 o'f the sides 1l. This paper support or bed 20 isat the Vfront end o-f the machine flush with the'front end piece 3 and is secured thereto on t-he top andat the sides by suitable screws 22, but is free and independent of the vmovable sections V13 ofthe sides l1, so that it may 'be lifted therefrom. This papersupport o-r'bed does not extend the entire length ,of the machine, a space being left at the rear `end for a purpose Ahereinafter referred to. This paper support is, in the best construct-ions, pivotally supported so that it can be lifted with the movable section of the `front piece and swung back when it is desired to get at t-he interior ofthe machine, the pivot for the support being located at `the rearend of thefmachine. The speciiic construction for thus pivotally support-ing this bed may be somewhat varied. As shown, this bed plate is rearwardly supported by two bars 23, one on each side of the machine, being suitably fastened to these bars by rivets 24. These bars 23-are loosely mounted on pivots 25 which pass through suitable apertures in the bars into the side edges of the rear end piece and are fast therein. A strip 26 ofthin sheet metal is provided on each side ofthe machine, the upper ends of these strips forming bearings for the pivots 25. These strips 26 bear against the outer sides of the bars 23 and prevent lateral movement or wabbling of the'bars. In addition to their function of pivotally supporting the rear end of the paper support or bed 20, these bars 23 also form bearings for feeding and guiding rollers 27 over which the paper strips l) are fed, these rollers 27 being located in the space previously referred to as being left at t-he rear end of the machine. For covering and inclos'ing this space at the rear end ofthe machine, there 1s provided a cover 30 which has aportion 30 covering such space. This cover may be secured in the machine in any desired manner. As shown, there are provided supporting and strengthening bars 31 which yextend across the machine below the lbed or support and `secured thereto,

This cover is provided with an opening approximately coinciding with the paper support or bed, as shown in Fig. l. This cover is further provided with a part forming a hand or arm support 34, which handor. arm support also serves as a cover for a carbon receptacle "35, which carbon receptacle is supported on the bars 3l by means of hangers 36. This carbon receptacle acts as a container for the roll of duplicating carbon paper 37 (indicated in dotted lines, Fig. 2). The cover 30 has formed on the side opposite to t-he arm rest 34 a depending flange 38, thefunctio-n of which will be hereinafter referred to. On the front end of the cover, and extending transversely thereof, is a rib 39 for strengthening it. This cover, when in closed position, is held locked by a spring presser bar or plate 40 secured in the particular construction illustrated to one of the side bars 23 before referred to as supporting the rear vend ofthe paper supporter bed. En =an ,autographic.register or recorder of the type referred to, the paper -strips on whichthe records are written are carried in the machine on reels, the paper strips being torn off these reels as required. An improved means vfor mounting these reels in registers of this class so that the reels may be more readily placed in the machinev and held properly centered when positioned Y therein is providedby the present invention, and the construction for accomplishing this purpose will now be described. The par ticular number of reels may be varied, depending on the number of duplicate records it is desired to make. In the present construction, three such reels 45 are shown. These reels -comprise wooden central supports 46 which are provided with supporting spindles 47. It is ynecessary for the proper operation of the machine for these spindles to readilyrotate. In the construction shown, these spindles are mounted so as to be easily rotatable in slots ,48, which slo-ts are located directly opposite eachother in the lower stationary sections 12 ofthe side pieces 11, before referred to. hese slots 48 are of a sufficient depth so that the supporting spindles 47 areentirely within the slots andbelow the plane of the upper edges of the stationary sections l2, so :that when'the movable sections 13 of side pieces 11 are swung down on the lhinges A14, lthe paper reels may be dropped in ithe'slots and thus vcentering V.the Vreels Vand providing a islight fri'ctionso that they will not unwind Atoo rapidly thererfare `prcnfided .fspiin'g presser plates 50, which spring presser plates are secured at one end to the inside upper edges of one of the movable sections 13 of the side pieces 11, one ofthese presser plates 50 being provided for each of the reels 45. These spring presser plates 50 are arranged to eX- ert an endwise pressure on the reels to center them and provide a slightfriction. The particular arrangement by which this endwise pressure on the reels is secured may be somewhat varied, but in the particular construction illustrated the lower or free ends of the plates bear against the paper on the reels. The reels are thus held in position, and there is exerted a slight friction against the paper, so that the paper is prevented from too rapidly unwinding.
From the reels 45 the paper strip or strips are led over the feeding and guiding rollers 27 and along the top plate of the machine, the direction of feed of the strips being longitudinal of the machine, as shown in Fig. 4. The carbon 37 is fed from the carbon receptacle 35, before referred to, transversely of the machine, being interposed between the paper strips for making the duplicate records as is usual. The carbon or carbon strips are clamped in position by the flange 38 of the cover before referred to, which fiange extends down over the side of one of the flanges 2l of the bed 20, before referred to, and as shown in Fig. '4, and clamps the carbon firmly in place against the side of the bed so that when the bed is raised to get at the interior of the machine, the carbon is likewise raised and does not become disarranged and does not have to be handled.
In order that the strips may be torn off as desired, there is provided by the present invention a tearing bar 55. This tearing bar may be of any suitable construction. Preferably, however, this tearing bar is also a presser bar, being so constructed as to press the paper strip or strips on to the bed or support of the machine so that the paper strips will not be disarranged either when writing on them or when they are being torn oft. The particular construction of this presser and tearing bar may be somewhat varied. In the particular construction shown, this presser and tearing bar comprises a metal bar or plate having a transverse portion 56 on which transverse portion is formed a presser surface 57 and a tearing surface 58. Depending from the transverse portion 56, and preferably integral therewith, are parallel downwardly extending portions 59. When in operative position, the presser surface 57 and the tearing surface 58 are caused to lie in different planes, both horizontally and vertically, the tearing surface 58 being located above and in advance of the presser surface 57. With this construction, it results that after the strip has been torn olf there is left projecting beyond the presser surface 57 a portion of the paper which the operator can grasp to pull forward a succeeding strip without necessitating the operator lifting the bar. This presser and tearing bar is pivotally mounted and is furthermore spring actuated so that it is normally forced into pressing relation with the paper support or bed 20 of the machine. The means for thus mounting this presser and tearing bar may be somewhat varied. As shown, it is mounted on the movable section 5 of the front end of the machine by the downwardly extending portions 59, these portions 59 being slotted to receive pivots 60 on which the extensions are freely rotatable. Springs 61 (see Fig. 3) normally force the bar 55 into pressing relation with the paper support or bed 20. In order that the operator may more easily and surely seize the paper strip to draw it from the machine, the upper edge of the movable section of the front end piece and the Yfront edge of the paper support or bed are provided with a cut-away portion 62, as shown in Fig. 3. Paper guides 64 are also provided on the bed plate for centering and guiding the paper to the tearing bar.
For a fuller description of the construction, functions and operation of the tearing bar or knife, reference may be had to my copending application,'Serial No. 497971, in which such presser and tearing bar is described and claimed, no claims thereto being made in the present application.
It is understood that this invention is not to be limited to the precise construction herein shown and described, but that variations may be made in the same without departing from the invention.
Whatis claimed is l. In an autographic register, the combination of a frame comprising front and rear end pieces, parallel side pieces each divided longitudinally to form a stationary section and a movable section, a plurality of paper reels mounted in the stationary sect-ions, and means carried on one of the movable sections for exertingendwise pressure against the reels.

In an autographic-register, the combination of a frame comprising front and rear end pieces, parallel side pieces each divided longitudinally to form a stationary section and a movable section, a plurality of paper reels mounted in the stationary sections, and spring presser plates mounted on one of the movable sections for exerting endwise pressure against the reels.
3. In an autographic register, a frame comprising front and rear end pieces, and parallel side pieces each divided longitudinally to form a stationary sect-ion and a movable section, oppositely'disposed slots in the stationary sections, a plurality of paper reels 'mounted in `said slots, and spring presser .plates on one ofthe movable sections for exerting endwise pressure against the reels.

In .an .autographic register, a 'frame comprising front and Arear end pieces and parallel side pieces each divided longitudinally'to form `astationarysection and a section .hinged thereto, the lower edges of the hinged sections'ibeing adapted to rest on the upper-.edges ofthe stationary sections, oppositely disposed slots :in the stationary sections, a `plurality of paper reels having spindles mounted in said slots, the spindles of said lreels being wholly within the slots and below the plane of the upper edges of the stationary sections, and spring presser plates carried on one of the hinged sections for exerting endwise pressure against the reels. y
