GEARING.
Specification of Letters Patent.

State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gearing, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in awning operating mechanism, and more particularly to that class or type of awnings in which the awning or canvas is adapted to be left out or put up through the medium of an awning roller, and the primary object of this invention is to provide an improved operating mechanism for connecting with such awning roller whereby the latter may be readily operated as desired through the medium of a hand crank.
A further object of the invention is to provide means whereby such mechanism will be automatically locked and unlocked by the removal and insertion of a removably mounted hand crank so as to prevent the unauthorized operation of such awning mechanism.
WVith the above mentioned and other ends in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, hereinafter described, illustrated in one of its embodiments in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1, is a side elevation of the improved operating mechanism as it appears attached to the front of a building or other suitable means of support, the awning roller and awning proper being removed for the purpose of clearer illustration of the parts. Fig. 2, a front ele vation of the same with the hand crank removed. Fig. 3, a front view of the crank gear casing, the cover casing being removed and a portion of the gearing mechanism be ing shown in section for the purpose of clearer illustration of the parts. Fig. 4, a sectional view taken on line 44 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5, a sectional View of the driving shaft gear detached, the locking member or plunger held in releasing position by the crank key. Fig. 6, a view of the crank key receiving gear hub detached from the operating gear and casing. Fig. 7, an end View of the same. Fig. 8, an end view of the crank key and adjustably mounted crank arm. Fig. 9, a side elevation of the crank key and crank arm. Fig. 10, a view similar to Fig. 5, and illustrating the for operation solely as a gravity lock, thus eliminating the spring.

As a means for supporting and operating one end of the awning-roller, (not shown) one end of the roller such as a pipe or wooden roller is adapted to receive and contain a trunnion shaft 1, carrying a bevel gear 2, said shaft being mounted in a suitable bracket 3. The bevel gear 2, is adapted to be operated through the medium of a sec ond bevel gear 4, operatively connected to a driving shaft 5.
As a means for supporting the second bevel gear 4, and the adjacent end of the driving shaft 5, whereby a universal connection is secured between the bevel gear 2, and the second gear 4, and permitting of the operation of the driving shaft 5, at any desired angle of inclination, a hanger yoke 6, is provided, said yoke consisting of the main body portion adapted to contain the bevel gear 4, and terminating in oppositely disposed bearing lugs 6, provided with bearing openings receiving and containing the trunnion shaft 1, and extending on either side of the bearing head of the bracket 3, whereby said hanger yoke 6, may swing freely from the'shaft 1, and thebevel gear 4, and driving shaft 5, be held in proper relative position with respect to the bevel gear 2.
As a means for operating or driving the driving shaft 5, and its connections, said shaft is connected at one end to the gearing or operating mechanism now described.
As a means for supporting and housing the driving gearing and hand crank in a suitable position, whereby the driving shaft 5, and attached gearing above referred to may be operated, a suitable housing or casing is provided, said housing or casing preferably comprising a stationary base portion 7 and a removable bearing cap or cover 7 said base portion 7, being adapted to be secured and supported upon suitable supports by means of securing bolts or the like passing through suitable bracket members 7, of the base portion 7.
The upper portion of the housing or casing is provided with a bearing opening adapted to receive and contain the bearing looking or plunger member hub portion 8 of a bevel gear 8,-carried within the housing or casing, said bevel gear being operatively connected to the adjacent end of the driving shaft 5, in any suitable and convenient manner, as for ex ample,by means of universal coupling members 9, one of said coupling members, in the present instance, being provided with an angular shank portion 9 adapted to extend into a similarly shaped angular opening in the hub position 8, of the bevel gear 8.
As a means for operating the bevel gear 8, a second bevel gear 10, is provided, said gear '10, preferably abutting against the rear Wall of the gear housing, and being adapted to be operated through the medium of a crank key 11, carrying an adjustably mounted crank arm 12.
As a convenient means for removably mounting and assembling the bevel gear 10, within the housing, said bevel gear is provided with a hub member 13, said hub memoperating gearing when A crank key 11, when the guide members 11 her being provided with an angular portion 13*, adapted to rest within a similarly shaped angular portion of the bevel gear 10, and, in the present instance, provided with a bearing head 13", resting in a bearin opening in the rear or adjacent wall of the gear housing. The front port-ion of the hub member is provided with a bearing portion 13, adapted to rest in a bearing openmg in the cap or cover 7*, of the casing, and provided with a retaining flange l3, adapted to'maintain the parts in proper position when the cap or cover is in position.
As a means for automatically locking the the crank key 11, and arm 12, are removed, as well as providing means whereby said gearing will be automatically unlocked for operation by the latter is inserted, the key receiving opening in the hub portion 13, of the driving gear 10, is provided with oppositely disposed guide or key slots 14, adapted to receive the oppositely disposed of the crank key, said guide slots 14, being intersected by oppositely disposed openings 14*, adapted to receive a plunger or looking member 15, arranged within the gear housing or casing in suitable relation to said openings, said plunger 15, being arranged, in the present instance, Within the bevel gear 8, and being supported in part by means of a cross bar 16, extending through suitable openings in the base portion 7, and being held in position by means of the cap or cover 7 of the gearing housing, said cross bar 16, being provided with an intermediate bearing portion 16 extending into a bearing opening M in the adjacent bevel gear 8, and serving to retain the latter in proper position and.

lVhen it is desired to operate the operating gearing the crank key 11, is inserted in the hub member 13, connected to the bevel gear 10, and as the guide members 11 pass down through the guide slots 14L, one of the inclined or wedge shaped portions of the guide members (see Fig. 9) will come into engagement with the plunger or locking member 15, releasing the latter and holding the same in unlocked position, as indicated in Figs. 5 and 10, of the drawings, whereby the plunger member 15 will be held in a retracted position and the gears may be operated as desired.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawin'gs,the operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood.
Having thus described an embodiment of my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
1. A gearing, comprising a gear housing, a driving shaft, a gear within said housing, a second gear meshing therewith and provided with a crank-key receiving opening, a plunger member normally engaging said 100 second gear, and a crank-key adapted to be inserted in said receiving opening and to engage and release said plunger member.
2. In a gearing, a gear housing, a driving shaft, a gear wheel connected to said shaft, a second gear wheel provided with a hub member having a crank key receiving opening, a plunger normally engaging said second gear, and a crank key having an in- I- clined projection adapted to enter said crank key receiving opening and engage and release said plunger.
3. A gearing, comprising a gear housing, a gear therein, a driving shaft connected to said gear, a second gear provided with a 115 hub member mounted in said housing and having guide slots, a plunger member normally engaging one of said guide slots, and a crank key provided with an inclined projection adapted to enter one of said guide slots and engage and release said plunger member. 4. In a gearing, the combination with a gear wheel, and a driving shaft connected to the latter; of a second 1 5 gear wheel provided with a hub member mounted in said housing, said hub member being provided with guide slots, a plunger member normally extending in one of said guide slots, and a crank-key provided with a crank arm, said crank-key being provided with guide members adapted to extend into said guide slots and to engage and release said plunger member.
5. In a gearing, a gear housing, a bevel gear mounted in said housing, a second bevel gear meshing therewith, a hub member connected to the latter and intersecting the face side of said housing, said hub member being provided with a crank-key receiving opening provided with oppositely disposed openings, a plunger member carried by said first mentioned bevel gear and adapted to enter one of said openings whereby said gears are locked, and a crank-key provided with an inclined projection adapted to engage and release said plunger member whereby said bevel gears may be operated.
6. A gearing, comprising a casing, a driving shaft, a gear-wheel mounted in said casing and connected with said shaft, a second gear-wheel meshing therewith and provided with a crank-key receiving opening, a looking plunger normally engaging with said crank-key receiving opening, and a crank- Copies of this patent maybe obtained for five cents each, by addressing the key adapted to be inserted in said receiving opening and to engage and release said lockin plunger.
In a gearing, a gear housing comprising a stationary base portion and a removable cap or cover, a bevel gear mounted in said housing, a driving shaft connected to said bevel gear, a second bevel gear mounted in said stationary base portion of said housing, a hub member mounted in said second bevel gear and said removable cap or cover, said hub member being provided with a crank-key receiving opening, a plunger member carried by said first mentioned bevel gear and adapted to normally engage said hub member, and a crank-key adapted to enter said crank-key-receiving opening and to engage and release said plunger member.
