To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, AUGUST R-osEN'rHaL, a citizen of the United States, residing in lVcst Allis, in the county of Milwaukee and State of isconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Discharge-spouts,
of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in discharge spouts for corn bushing and shredding machines and relates more particularly to spouts or discharge tubes provided with flexible elbows and discharge ends whereby the discharge tube may be inclined in any direction desired.
The principal object of this invention is to provide a discharge tube which may be bent to any convenient angle or height desired to discharge material therefrom.
A further object of this invention is to provide a discharge tube or spout with a flexible portion which is strong and durable and which contains but a minimum number of parts and is inexpensive to manufacture.
A further object of the invention is to provide a flexible elbow or discharge end for a stacker tube which is formed of sheet metal bent into spiral formation and so riveted together as to permit the structure to be bent at different angles.
With the above, and other objects in view the invention consists of the discharge tube and its parts and combinations as set forth in the claims, and all equivalents thereof.
In the accompanying drawing in which the same reference characters indicate the same parts in all of the views: Figure 1 is a side view of the discharge end of a dis charge tube provided with the improved flexible portion; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view thereof; Fig. 8 is a transverse sectional view thereof; Fig. 4 is a side view of a portion of the sheet metal of which the flexible part is formed before it is bent into spiral formation; and Fig. 5 is a side view of a lower portion of a stacker tube provided with the improved flexible portion in the form of an elbow.
Referring to the drawing the numeral 8 indicates the upper portion of a discharge spout or tube of ordinary construction to which is connected the improved flexible discharge end 9. Tlhe flexible end is formed of a strip of sheet metal 10 wound spirally with one of the side edges thereof overlapping the edge of the adjacent convolution, thus forming a flexible tube. In order to preserve the same diameter of the tube throughout its length the flexible portion of the strip of metal is of curved form and when wound the outer overlapped edge of the metal is slightly larger in diameter than the inner edge to compensate for the thickness of the material and to permit the flexing of the tube. In some cases it may be desirable to crimp the edges of the metal to further increase the differences between the diameters of the inner and the outer edges of the convolutions. The convolutions of the tube are held in spaced relation with each a other by means of rivets 11 which pivotally connect said convolutions together. These rivets are equi-distantly spaced and divide the tube circumferentially into five parts and extend longitudinally in five lines and connect portions of alternate adjacent convolutions together. The rivets of the lines are staggered circumferentially with rela tion to each other and each complete convolution has only three rivets extending there through in order not to bind the convolutions into a rigid structure. The portion of the metal strip below each pivotal connec tion on the inside is cut awayto increase the flexibility of the joint and to save metal. A band 12 is connected to the outer end of the flexible tube to give a finished appearance thereto.
In Fig. 5 the flexible joint is shown connected to the lower end of the discharge tube 8 and also to the outer end of the inner portion of the tube 13 to form a flexible elbow 14 which is constructed in the same manner as the flexible discharge end of the tube. The convolutions of the joint are wound and overlap in the direction of the line of travel of material within the tube so that the inner edges of the convolutions will not obstruct the passage of material through the tube.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that a discharge tube provided with the improved flexible joint is adopted to be bent at any angle and also in any direction desired and that the joint is strong and durable and does not require outside supporting or reinforcing means.
hat I claim as my invention is:
l. A discharge spout, comprising a flexible tube formed of a spirally Wound strip of material with overlapping portions, and means pivotally connecting the overlapping portions together at a plurality of points circumferentially, said means pivotally connecting the overlapping portions to gether being alternately staggered circumferentially with relation to each other.
2. A discharge spout, comprising a flex ible tube formed of a spirally wound strip of metal with overlapping portions, the outer edge of each convolution being 01" larger diameter than the inner edge, and rivets extending through the overlapping portions at a plurality of points circumferentially to pivotally connect said portions together, said rivets being staggered circumferentially with relation to each other and spaced equi-distant spirally from each other.
3. A discharge spout, comprising a flexible tube formed of a spirally wound strip of metal with overlapping portions, and longitudinal lines of rivets extending through the overlapping portions at a plurality of points eircumferentially to pivotally connect said portions together, said rivets being staggered with relation to each other and spaced equidistant spirally from each other.
