To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY IIEnsTEIN, a citizen of the United States, residinoat Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and tate of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Driers, of which the following is a speciication.

My invention relates to improvements in clothes driers, and the objects of my improvements are simplicity and economy in construction and convenience and eiliciency in use.

In the accompanying drawing :Figure 1 is a front view of my clothes drier attached to the side of a building ready for use. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, the wall of the building being shown in section. Fig; 3 is a side view of the same, part of the building being shown in section.v Fig. 4 is a plan view of my reel opened out. Fig. 5 is a side view of a modification of my reel, mounted on a post. Fig. 6 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 7 is a side view of a side bar, in part broken away, on an enlarged scale. Fig. 8 is a similar view of a part of a side frame. Fig. 9 is a side elevation of one of my special closed rings.

A is the clothes reel supported on a double jointed swinging bracket B on the outside of the wall IV of a house or some other convenient support and adapted to be supported thereby in a position outward from the said wall or to be swung inwardly so as to bring the said reel A in convenient position in front of the window D `and so that one of the bays E will enterwithin the space of the casing H of the window. The said swinging bracket or arm B comprises a Vshaped fore arm 10 composed of a lower horizontal member 11 and an upper inclined member 12 pivotally mounted by their rear ends on pivots 13 in vertical alinement and having their forward ends united and held together by a rivet 16 at the apeX 14 of the V. Outward from the said rivet 16 are ears 17 provided with a vertical hole 15 which receives a bolt C, held in place by nuts, a top nut 18 and a lower nut 19.A The said bottom nut 19 is secured against turning on the rod C by a pin 51 or in some other ordinary manner and the top nut 18 is tightened by turning with a wrench in an ordinary manner. A cotter pin 52 prevents and the bolt C. The said bottom nut 19 is secured in. position on the rod C in the manner described at a proper distance from the head 21 of the said bolt so as to permit the pivotal supporting of the said reel A in a manner to be described. The said reel A comprises supporting arms 22, preferably of metal, which are crossed at right angles at their centers and are generally liat and have a central hole 23 which is a fit for the bolt C at the body of the unt-hreaded portion 24 adjacent t-he said head 21 and rests on and is supported by the said head. Between the upper side of the said arms 22 and the bottom of the said iiXed nut 19 I pro vide a steadying bracket 25 which comprises an inverted V shaped strap having a hole 2G in the apeX of the V fitting the said bolt C, and having the lower ends of the arms provided with outwardly extending feet 27 secured by rivets 23 to the said supporting arms 22. The said supporting arms 22 eX- tend equidistant of the central hole 23 and have the outer ends 8 bent upwardly and joined by rivets 29 to the sides of a square frame 54, preferably of metal, having fiat sides disposed vertically. On the outer sides of each of the saidiiat sides 30 are secured in a manner to be described side bars 32 forming bays E. The said side bars 32 of the bays E are arranged in pairs, and are pivotally secured near their inner ends 53 to the said frame sides 30 by means of a bolt 55 adjacent the corners 56 of the said frame 54 and have the eXtreme inner ends 53 removably secured to the side pieces 30 by means to be described. The said means comprises a special closed ring 57 arranged to slide back and forth on the said side piece 30 so as to engage and disengage with the `said eXtreme inner 'end 53 of the said side bar 32. The said ring 57 has a rear opening 53 which is a fit for thesaid frame side piece 30 and an 'off-set 60 which is a lit for the said sidebar 32. By moving the said ring 57 toward the center vof the said side piece 30 the same will pass beyond the said eXtreme end 53 of the side bar 32 and allow the latter to swing downward, and be supported in a pendant position by its pivot 55.

In order to prevent the ring 57 from sliding out of place when holding the side bar 32 in horizontal position for holding clothes, a groove may be provided for the ring, such as the groove 61 in side bar 32, as shown in Fig. 7 or groove 62 in the side frame 30 as shown in Fig. 8. The side bars 32 as stated are arranged in pairs, and two pairs are secured to each pair of frame sides 30, each pair extending outwardly from the center so as to form the bays E and the said side bars 32 are arranged in alinelnent, forming essentially a structure composed of two crossed ladders F. The said frame sides 30 may be four inches deep and the side bars 32 two inches deep. One ladder structure F is located along the lower edge of the said frame 54 and the other along the upper edge. The said frame 30 and supporting arms 22 constitute a skeleton central plate I) for pivotally supporting the said ladders F and bays E. The said side bars 32 are cross-connected by removable ropes or lines 39. As shown a series of such lines 39 are provided, each comprising a short length having Athe central portion 41 looped over a button 42 on one side bar 32 and removable therefrom and knotted ends 43 engaged with holes 44 in the other side bar Then the said loop central portion 41 is removed from the button 42, the rope 39 will hang clear of the central space of the bay E. The said pivots 13 in the members 11 and 12 ofthe fore arm 10 are located in the forward ends of two swinging arms 45, which are themselves pivotally mounted by their rear ends on eyes 46 secured to the wall WV or other means of support, and are cross braced by a strut 47 which is secured to the said arms 45 by rivets passing through said arms 45 and feet 4S in the ends of the strut 47. The lower arm 11 of the fore arm 10 is provided with a steadying hook 50 which may be engaged with an eye 51 in the window sill or at some other convenient point and serves to hold the arm in extended position.

In order to provide additional clothes hanging means which may be used after the four bays E have been filled with clothes hung from the lines 39 I provide other removable lines 66 cross connecting the side bars 32 of adjacent bays E at their outer ends. The said cords or lines 66 may be secured by knotted ends 67 engaging with holes 68 in one bar 32. The middle 69 is looped over a button 42 on the other bar 32 for use in hanging clothes and is hung on a hook 71 at some convenient point near the central plate P so that the said rope 66 will not interfere with admitting the said bay in the window. The said additional ropes 66 will accordingly cross-connect the outer corners of the bays E and will accordingly be accessible for hanging and removing clothes without danger for the. operator.

In Figs. 5 and 6, a modified reel A1 is shown having ropes 72 lling in the corners 7 3 between the bays E, and adapted for use with a post, as shown in Fig. 5.

By the arrangement described, all of the lines for hanging clothes are readily accessible and convenient for use and the same is compact and economical of space.

Vhen in use all the clothes supporting lines are essentially in one plane. The reel A comprises a flat structure and accordingly does not shut off the light or obstruct the view as is the case with a conical or pyramidal structure.

As'described, the said side bars 32 have generally free ends and the space between them is provided with a set of removable clothes-hanging means made up of a multiple of units and when one of the bays made up of apair of the said bars is passed through the window space and received in a room, direct access may be obtained to the said clothes-hanging means while 4supported in normal position for use, andfurthermore, when the outer clothes-hanging units are not in use and removed, the person hanging clothes can pass freely between the said free ends of the bars 32 thus having access to the inner clothes hanging units. Furthermore, when not in use for hanging clothes, the said reel A is folded up or collapsed, by dropping the side bars 32 to the pendent position, and swung away from in front of the window, thus clearing away all obstruction from in front of the windows on each side.

Another feature of my device is the fact that only the number of bays actually needed may be brought into use, the others being dropped out of the way.

An important feature of my device is the safety feature, as with the supporting frame or arm properly located with reference to the window the said bays E can be passed directly through the window into the room, so that the work of hanging up or removing the clothes may be performed right in the house, avoiding exposure of the user.

I claim as my invention 1. In a clothes drier having a reel comprising a central plate provided with lateral arms for supporting clothes hanging means, each of said arms pivotally mounted on said plate, and a slide ring 57 adapted to slide on said frame and to engage and disengage with the said arms adjacent said pivot.

2. A clothes drier comprising a reel pivotally mounted on a swinging arm, the said reel comprising a set of four bays spaced at 90 degree intervals and each of the said bays comprising apair of parallel arms cross-connected by clothes-hanging means, the said bays individually being capable of being bodily received for their entire length within a window space while rigidly connected by their inner ends.

3. A clothes drier comprising a reel pivotally mounted on a swinging arm, the said reel comprising a set of four bays spaced at 90 degree intervals, and each of thesaid bays comprising a pair of parallel arms7 and the said arms of each bay cross-oonnected by clothes-hanging means, and the said means comprising a multiple of units, each of which is removable, whereby when the outer units are removed, a free operating space is provided between the arms.

4c. A clothes drier comprising a reel pivotally supported on a swinging arm, the said arm comprising an elbow-jointed structure having two arm sections pvotally connected whereby the said reel may be brought into operating position at a window space and the point of support for the said swinging arm may be relatively close to the Said 15 window spa-ee.

5. In a clothes drier comprising a reel pivotally supported on a swinging arm B, ,the said arm comprising a V shaped fore arm 10. having the inner ends pvotally sup- 20 ported in Vertical alinement by a pair of swinging arms 4:5, which latter are pivotally mounted by their rear ends to a fixed `support.
