The. invention relates to that part ofa saw-mill mechanism by which the log is held for the actiouof the saw. s y
, Thedrawmgs represent a mechanism embodying my "invention. i i
i A shows the mechanism in side and sectional ole-3 vation, v
Bis a frontelevation of it. I l v .a denotes the head-block, to the front of which the log is to be secured by the dogging mechanism, one of which is shownin the drawings. I L b 0 denote thetwo dogging-teeth, placed in vertical line, the points of the teeth standing toward each other, as shown at A. r
The lower tooth,'b, springs from the front of a tube, d, and the upper tootlffrom the front of a similar tube, e,:'both tubes being upon a vertical shaft, f. This shaft has upon its surface two screw-threads, 'glh, which work in nut-threadspin the tubes.
The sh ft is supportedtin suitable bearings 'at'the' foot of a vertical guide-rail or upright, i, and at the top of a post orbearingyk, erected upon shch rail, the
tubes being guided (as moved up and down by the screw-thre'ads) by guides 'orways, l, on the front of the rail. i s it i At the top of the screw-shaft is a crank or handle,
m, for turning the-shaft, and, as it is turned, the two teeth are simultaneously forced toward each other and into the top and bottom of the log, (one side of which isbronght between them,) or are forced apart and out of the log, or into-position to be forced into the log in accordance with the direction of rotation of the haudle.
.The'nprightt' is fixed on the front of a horizontal slide-rod, n which passesthrough the head-block, as
.denotedat-A, the rear end of this rod being jointed to a band-lever, 0, which is fulcrumed. at '19, the upright and the dog-teeth being forced forward or back by when dogged to adjust the posit-ionof the side of the log to be cut.
I claim I In combination with a head-block having a sliding post orupright, t, carrying two dogging-teeth, simultaneously operated, as shown, the rollers s, for' sup porting such post or upright, substantially as shown and described. i Also, in ccmbination with such post or upright and dogging-teeth, the lever o, toothed rack q, and pawl 'r,
for moving the post and looking it in position, substantially as described.
Executed October 20, 1869.
