MOTOR-KEY LOOK FOR CALCULATING-MACHINES Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 18, 1912.
Application filed August 7, 1911. Serial No. 642,887.
the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a detailed View of my improved motor key lock for calculating machines. Fig. 2 is a front elevational view of the locking bar. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of my combined adding and calculating machine showing my improvement attached thereto. Fig. 4 is a detailed view showing the manner of engaging the totalizer wheels with their actuating devlces. Fig. 5 is a detailed view showing the manner of operating the motor clutch by a motor ke This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in motor key locks for calculatinmachines, the object being to prevent the epression of the motor key when the totalizers are not inv proper registration with their actuating devices. My improved motor key lock is shown in position on a combined adding and computing machine illustrated in French Letters Patent No. 383,719 dated January 16, 1908, being the invention of Hubert Hopkins and commercially known as Moon Hopkinsv Bil-ling Machine, but it is obvious that there are other types of calculating machines with which my invention could be used.
In the drawings: 1 indicates a motor key which is arranged upon two, bell crank levers 2, only one of which however is shown in the drawings.
3' is a rod connecting the bell crank lever 2 with a bar 4, said bar controlling the clutch mechanism which connects the electric motor, 14, with the driving shaft of the machine. Upon the depression of the motor key 1, the bar 4 is moved forwardly, such movement throwing the clutch in cooperative position whereby the motor will drive the machine one revolution. In Fig. 5 I have shown the bar 4 as cooperating with a clmtch operating member 118, said member being raised, upon the operation of the bar 4, out of engagement with a cam projection 109 on a sleeve 109, whereby said sleeve is thrown into contact by means of the spring 110 with the worm gear 111 in mesh with the worm 112 on the armature shaft 113 of; the motor 14. This forms no part of my present invention, except as the same enters in combination with the other parts of the mechanism. The bar 4 is formed with a cam face 4 which, upon the forward move.
ment of said bar incident to the depression of the motor key will engage the foot extension on a vertically movable bar 5 formed with suitable guiding slot-s through which screws or pins fastened to the frame of the machine pass. The upper end of the bar 5 is formed with a relatively wide face having one or more notches 5 therein, said upper edge cooperating with a pin 6 on the end of shaft 7. On this shaft 7 are arranged the totalizer wheels 119 constituting the forward totalizers which are movable laterally with respect to the machine by means of an escapement mechanism not shown, but of which the escapement teeth 7 a on the shaft or rod 7 form a part. A lever 8 connected. to the end of the rod 7 and operated by a spring 9 tends to move the totalizer wheels and shaft 7 leftwardly when the escapement mechanism is operated by projections on the laterally movable carriage of the typewriting mechanism, as fully set forth in the French patent aforesaid. I have indicated the platen of this carriage at 9 in the accompanying drawings.
When the typewriter carriage and its platen are moved to starting position at the extreme right, the groups of totalizer wheels 119 are also moved to the right so that the left-hand group is in operative relation to the actuating racks. Then, as the carriage is spaced leftwardly the projections cooperate with the escapement mechanism of which the teeth 7 a form a part, so that the middle group of totalizer wheels are brought into operative relation to the actuating devices. Finally, when the escapement mechanism is again operated, the right-hand group of totalizer wheels is brought into operative relation to the actuatin devices. \Vhen the carriage has been move to its startingposiplate 5. If the motor key should now be operated, the parts being in proper position, the plate 5 can be raised and the machine made to perform a complete operation. If the typewriter carriage is now stepped leftwardly' and in such stepping movement opcrates the escapement mechanism so as to displace the first grou of totalizer wheels and replace them by the second or middle group of totalizer wheels, then the pin 6 should register with the notch 5 and permit the operation of the motor key. Should one of the totalizer wheels 119 be displaced as sometimes may happen, so that the totalizer is prevented from moving the necessary distance, it follows that the registration of any number into the totalizer wheels would be an improper registration and hence the previous registrations in the totalizer wheels would be disturbed so that it would be impossible to obtain a correct total. Upon the arrest of the groups of totalizer wheels in other than correct position, the pin 6 will either not properly register with the notch 5 or be located beyond the ends of the widened portion of plate 5 and hence will interfere with the operation of the motor key preventing the motor key from being depressed.
In order to prevent the parts from being sprung should an ignorant operator attempt to operate the motor key by force,'notwithstanding the notice to him by the resistance of said key that the totalizer wheels are not properly positioned, I provide a backing plate 11, which extends above the pin 6 and throughout the path of travel of said pin so that if an effort is made to operate the motor when the totalizer wheels are improperly positioned, the rigidity of this backing plate will resist any undue springing of the parts. A spring 5 is connected to the plate 5 to return it to normal position after operation.
The totalizer wheels 119 are normally elevated above the actuating racks 100 and when an example is introduced into the machine through the key-board and the motor key operated, the actuatin racks are permitted to move forward under the impelling action of their springs until the arrest by the key position stops; then on the back stroke of the machine, the totalizer wheels are moved down into mesh with the racks and the restoring bar in moving the racks backwardly after they are engaged with the totalizer wheels introduces the numbers set up on the key-board into the totalizer wheels all of which is fully set forth in French patent above referred to.
In Fig. 4, I have illustrated means for engaging the totalizer wheels 119 with the racks 100, the same comprising link 113 connected to one of the frame plates 49 in which the shaft 7 is mounted. This link carries a tappet 113 having a pin 113 for with a bell crank lever 173 and a link 174 operated by the rod 170 connected to the outer end.
In the event that the totalizer wheels are not shifted to the proper registering position with respect to the racks, it will be obvious that the non-registration of the pin 6 with the vibrating bar 5 will, in addition to preventing the motor key from throwing the clutch to operatively connect the motor with the actuating devices, also prevent the engagement between the totalizer wheels and their actuating racks.
