TAKE-UP FOR SEWING-MACHINES.

Be it known that I, FRANCIS JOSEPH Fnnnsn, of the city of Montreal, district of Montreal, and Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Take-Ups for Sewing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description of the same.
My inventio'n'relates particularly to sewing machines of the type disclosed in a pending application filed by me on -March 31, 1897, under Serial No. 630,187, of which this is a divisional part, although it may be applied to advantage to other types of sewing machines.
The invention forming the subject-matter of the present application may be said briefly to consist of the combined take-up and stitch-setter disclosed but not claimed in my said pending application and comprising a take-up provided with a Zhreadlock for locking the thread during the takeup movement of the take-up for the purpose of setting the stitch during the latter portion of said take-up movement.
For full comprehension, however, of my present invention reference must be had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification in which like symbols indicate the same parts and wherein Figure l is a front elevation of my improved combined take-up and stitch setter; Fig. 2 is an elevation of the right hand side thereof looking at Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a detail enlarged elevation similar to Fig. 1 of the upper end of my improved take-up and stitch setter; Fig. 4 is a perspective view of my improved combined take-up and stitch setter, together with the portion of the machine upon which it is mounted and its actuating cam disk, the latter being shown in section to disclose the cam groove or double leader cut therein.
A lever, to be presently described, is fulcrumed about midway of its length upon a spindle 6, carried rigidly in a bracket 0 cast in one with the rigid shuttle case indicated at a and constituting a portion of the machine frame. The end of one arm (l of this lever carries a roller 6, adapted to take into its actuating cam groove or double-leader e in cam disk 6 while the end of the other arm f thereof is off-set as at g, and has the Specification of Letters Patent.

end of such off-set portion extended in thickness and formed with a guide way extending longitudinally of such arm and adapted to receive an adjustable clamping plate h, which is adjusted toward a thread truck or sheave 2', by means of a screwj, having a tapered head is, while such plate is set in any position to which it may be adjusted by a set screw Z. It is obvious that a most minute adjustment of this plate can be obtained in the above arrangement.
The thread truck i is carried by the end of an upwardly off-set portion n of the upper cranked end 0 of alongitudinally slotted slide p adjustably connected to the face of the arm f and'retained thereon against displacement by retaining screws 9, r, taking through the slot in said slide and into the arm f as shown; while the lower end of this slide rests upon an eccentric 8 formed with a hub section 25, adapted to be adjusted around the spindle b and retained in any desired position by a set screw u. The function of this eccentric is to regulate the time at which the clamp h, will be caused to clamp the thread which time will be varied according to the depth it may be required to draw the shuttle thread into the work. The horizontal portion of this slide is provided with a localizing pin 1), adapted to receive one end of a helical spring w, the other end whereof bears upon a shoulder 2, formed by diminishing the lower end 3 of a screw 4, taking through a screw-threaded perforation in the off-set portion 9 of the lever. The function of this spring w, being to continually effect an operative engagement of the slide 70, with the eccentric 8, while the arrangement just described for carrying such spring, allows the same to be adjusted.
The operation of my improved combined take-up and stitch setter is as follows :The portion of the cam of largest diameter causes the lever to dwell in the position with its thread carrying end at the greatest distance from the work. During the progress of the formation of the stitch, and the consequent using up of thread, the portion of the cam between the larger and smaller diameters will lower the thread carrying end of the lever toward the work thereby feeding suflicient thread for the stitch. The smaller diameter then causes the lever to dwell while its thread carrying end is in its lowermost position to allow of the manipulation of the thread in the formation of the stitch, and the portion of the cam connecting the smaller to the larger diameter raises the thread carrying end of the lever away from the work thereby taking up the slack thread, as, for instance, is required when drawing the thread from the shuttle. Just before the termination of the upward movement of the lever the stitch set-ting slide moves into contact with the thread truck and locks the thread thereon, which causes the last portion of the said upward movement of the lever to tighten and set the stitch in the work.
Having thus described my invention I desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States:
. 1. A take-up operating during the latter part of its take-up motion to set-the stitch, and provided with means for locking the thread during such motion, and adjustable means for operating the locking means during a variable portion of the latter part of the take-up motion.
2. A takeup operating during the latter part of its take-up motion to set the stitch,
and comprising a lever, a thread truck carried thereby, means for oscillating the lever, means carried by the lever for locking the thread, and connections between the locking means and a fixed part of the machine acting to operate the locking means during the take-up motion of the take-up.
3. A stitch-setting take-up comprising a lever carrying a thread truck, means for oscillating the lever, a thread clamp mounted on the lever, and means acting during the take-up movement of the lever to cause the thread clamp and the thread truck to engage and lock the thread between them.
4. A take-up operating during the latter part of its take-up motion to set the stitch, and comprising a single vibrating lever carrying a thread truck operating directly upon the thread running to the needle, and means operating during a part of the take-up motion to lock the thread against the thread truck, substantially as described.
