Be it known that I, EMILE ERNST Evans, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in New York, in the borough of Manhattan, count y and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Furs, of which the following is a specification. Y

This invention relates to an improved fur which is made from skins that are unfit for use in the manufacture of fur wearing apparel, and which combines lightness, warmth, waterproof quality and durability so as to surpass in usefulness and attractiveappearance the fur skins heretofore used in the manufacture of fur-garments.

The invention consists of a fur comprising a face-layer of tanned, dyed and curled skin waterproofed on the fur and also on the flesh side, a backing of split waterproofed leather, and a backingjof waterproof cement .l uniting the face-layerv and split leather backnIn the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a top-view, Fig. 2 a vertical section on line 2, 2, Fig. 1, .of my improved fur and Fig. 3 is a section of a small piece of the fur, drawn on a larger scale.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the views.

Referring to the drawing, a represents the face-layer and b the backing composing my improved fur. The face-layer consists of a tanned by the wellknown chromium-process and then dyed. After dressing and dyeing the skin, it is sub- 'lected to the curling treatment so that the air or wool retains the curl which is desired to be produced. The curl is obtained by pressing the tanned and dyed skins between male and female die-plates, the male and backin nient with t e water-proof solution by which the layers are impregnated. After the skin is placed between the plates, it is subjected to a high pressure up to-800 lbs. or more, the dies being simultaneously heated by a strong electric current, so that' the curl is retained.

The skin is then made waterproof in the'fur as well as on the flesh-side, by a solution of caoutchouc in benzin, and then cemented by means of a-waterproof rubber-cement to the backing b, which is made of thin split calfor other leather. or fabric. The backing is made waterproof by means of a solution of caoutc houc in benzin before being cemented to the flesh side of the fur. ment mixes intimately with the face-layer owing to the aiiinity of the ceis thus curled and backed, it is ready` for use and can undergo all the operations, vsuch as stretching, nailing, and pressing, pertaining to the furriers craft, so as to complete the fur-garments or other articles of fur.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire tol secure by Letters Patent:

A fur consisting of a face-layer oftanned, dyed and curled skin waterproofed b oth in the fur and in the liesh side, a backing of .split waterproofed leather, and a backing of waterproof cement uniting the face-layer and split-leather backing. l
