To all whom it mag concern:
Be it known that LGusra-vus A. WAGNER, citizen of the United States,-residing at Jasper, in the county of Lenawee and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Formers or Molds for Forming Concrete Oisterns, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has relation to improvements in sectional and collapsible formers for forming cylindrical concrete or cement cisterns ofthat class commonly known as jug cisterns, and it'has'for its object primarily to provide by the peculiar construction of the former an opening in-the neck portion of the same considerably smaller in diameter than that of the body portion through the medium of-said opening.
The'sections'of the former can'be readily and conveniently taken apart piece by piece and withdrawn through the opening after the cistern is set or hardened and'the sections can be again assembled through the opening for'forming the cistern.
WVith this and other objects in view the inventionconsists in the novel construction and combination of parts as "will be hereinafter more in detail described andthe asserted novelty specifically claimed.

F designates a ratchet lever, the outer end of which is pivotally secured in the loops 6, e of the meeting ends ofthe band by means of pivots f, f, rigidly secured-in said end of the lever, theouter'end playing in a recess f formed ina section of one of the circular pieces. The opposite 'free end of the lever F, is passed under one endof a short piece f, provided on itsfre'e endwit-h a pin f one of the edges of'thelever F, being serrated for the purpose of engaging said pin. Theother end of the piece F, is pivoted to the bl'ock d of an adjacent triangular section C. G designates another and shorter ratchet lever, 'one en'd of which is similarly secured in the'loops, 9.1g, of a smaller and inner circular band passed around the periphery of the blocks d and under the metallic clips (5 H'designates another and shorter piece or strip having one end secured to the'block d" of an adjacent section G, the opposite end being left free and under which the "free end 0'1 the ratchet lever G is passed so *that'the 'raitchet teeth of the lever G may engage a pin '72 secured "in the free end of the lever Three of these bottom sections at their outer or broader portions *are hinged together as at z, '5 to enable the ratchet mechanism to remain intact when it is necessary to remove the sections in disassembling or removing the parts after the cistern is formed. Another of these bottom sect-ions is hinged as at L at its apex to a small centrally located disk to which the apices of the triangular sections C abut and at its outer or broader portion, a keeper or key L is passed through an opening in the band E and also in a block L to secure and release this at this point.
M designates one of a multiple number of vertical curvilinear side sections of the former, and secured to the inner face thereof near the top of said section is a curvilinear block m upon which is seated another curvilinear block 722/. The block 71?. has at one end a beveled edge m asshown in Fig. 4. A short strip m is secured to the inner faces of these sections and located at right angles to the blocks, and another piece m being secured to the inner face of the section M and located beneath these blocks, said piece supporting the blocks. Hinged to the ends of block m by means of hinges N, N, are two short beveled blocks N N At one end of the block m is another small beveled block hinged to the under side and end of said block as at n. These blocks, when the former or mold is assembled, form one of the rims of the same by fitting in corresponding recesses in adjacent strips and held detachably by buttons 12, W, as clearly shown in Figs. 5 and 6 of the drawings. A lower group of blocks forming the lower rim of the former are also secured to the inner face of the section M and are a duplicate of the upper group. The description of the upper group being already given it is not thought necessary to again describe this group. Bands I are passed around the upper series of the blocks just described and are identical in construction to the band E, being provided with a similar ratchet lever and keeper. Small metallic clips m are secured to the upper sides .of the blocks m, under which the bands 1* are passed.
P, designates the dome or cover section, which is formed in several detachable sections which rest upon the vertical curvilinear side sections, as shown in Fig. 1.
In Fig. 3 I have shown a bottom plan or inverted View of the cover of the former which is substantially a duplicate of the bottom section, the exception being that several of the triangular shaped sections are not hinged as fastening means but buttons alone are used. This not being deemed an essentiality it is thought that the description heretofore given of the construction of the bottom section will answer for the cover section. Q designates the neck of the mold or former located over the open portion at the apex of the dome and which is composed of an outer and an upper annulus g. and a lower and outer annulus 9. These annuli are detachably secured to an inner and upper annulus R and an inner smaller and lower annulus R by means of rods R R and R having upper curvilinear ends passed through openings in the annuli as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 8. Vithin these an nuli and disposed in circular series is a mult-iple number of vertical slats S, S, located equi-distant from each other. The upper and outer annulus g is slit through and a latch T is formed of a short piece of metal which is secured upon the outer surface of the annulus g by which the annulus 9 may be opened or closed as occasion requires, a staple T being secured to the outer surface of the annulus g by which an opening formed in the end of the hinge allows the staple T to pass through it for securing the meeting ends of the annulus 9 together. As the fastening means for the inner and upper annulus R is a counterpart of the fastening means for the annulus g as shown in Figs. 7 8 and 9 a further description of this fea ture of the invention is deemed unnecessary.
U designates a circular cover or mold for the neck of the body of the former or mold which is formed in two sections a and a detachably secured together by means of a band V passed around the periphery of said cover, and secured to this band V at one of the meeting ends of the two sections is a short strip of metal V having an opening in one of its ends through which is passed a staple V secured to the band which engages in the opening in one end of the strip V and through which is passed a keeper not herein shown to hold the sections together. The cover or mold U, of the neck portion of the body of the former or mold is located between the larger annuli q and g and the upper and lower annuli R and R and the underside thereof is projected onto the concrete or filling between these annuli.
In Fig. 7 I have shown an enlarged view of one of the circular pieces and means for securing the two sections of the same together consisting of a narrow fiat strip of metal W, in which is formed an eye W, bent around a small pivot W centrally thereof, said strip being provided at one end with a slot 10 within which engages a staple X, which secures the two ends of this circular section together, as clearly shown in Fig. 7 of the drawings.
The utility and manner of operating the improved mold or former will be readily understood. The entire device assembled as illustrated in Fig. l is inserted into the opening formed in the ground, and the space between the outer surface of the mold and the wall of the ground opening is filled with cement, the bottom of the opening havmg been prev ously covered with cement. The neck portion ofv the mold is also cove ered with cement and after the cement has set or hardened an operator descends into the former and, by releasing the devices which secure the mold sections, permits the latter to be collapsed and removed separately through the opening in the mold neck. Thus it will be observed that the mold serves as a core around and upon which the completed cistern is formed.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A mold or former for cement or concrete cisterns, comprising a cylindrical body portion consisting of separable sections, means for detachably securing said sections together consisting of clamping bands and horizontally arranged serrated levers, a neck supported upon the upper end of the body portion and consisting of concentric annuli connected by curvilinear rods.
2. A mold or former for cement or concrete cisterns, comprising a body portion consisting of a series of vertically disposed sections, means for securing said sections together detachably, consisting of clamping bands and serrated horizontally operating tensioning levers for said bands, a bottom consisting of a series of triangular sections provided with securing cleats, and a neck supported upon the upper end of said body portion.
