Be it-known that I, GIDEO'N EfNEwooM, of
Bucksport, in thecountyfof Hancock and State .of Maine, have inveuteda` new and useful or Improved Heel for lBoots and Shoes; and I do hereby declare that the following, taken in conn'ectionwith the Vdrawngswhich accompany and Aform part of this specification, is a description oi'ir'ny invention sufficent to enable-those skilled in the art to which it appertains. to practice it.` l y Thslinventi'ou relates to :in improvement in hollow metallicheels; and
The invention 'consists in an improved method of constructing the, heel, it being made in two parts,A an upper and an under section, an improved method oi' securing the heel to-the boot or shoe; and also in providing the heel with-spins or calks, which may be i projected througlrthe bottom, or withdrawn, at the vpleasureoi' the wearer, as will he `hereinafter more `folly described.`

The upper section is `formed with a thin fia-nge, a, inside of whiclrits the flange b,formcdr1i1pon lower section Bf r 'lhesc two ianges, thus fitting closely together', hold the two sections in jtheir proper relative positions, or to prevent lateral movement; while, for the erspective view of Ymy invention purpose of locking them closely together, a short spur, (l, is formed upon the section B, at 4the rear part, which tits into a corresponding recess lin section A; and aspring, c, secured at its lower end to section B, as shown in iig..3, catches intoarecuss in section A, thus rmly locking the two sections together'.
To separate the' sections, a pointed instrument or awl is inserted in a small aperture between the sec` t tions, and Vpressed against spring c, forcing it out oi'v the recess in section A, when they are readily separated.

'Among the advantages of my invention are, the
ease' and security with which it is attached to thc bootor shoe, its simplicity, chcapness, and durability, and the ease with which it is changed from a smooth to a calked heel, and back again, at the will oi' the wearer.
