SANDING DEVICE.

Be it known that I, LE Bum'nn T. DUN- CAN, citizen of the United States, residing at Long Pine, in the county of Brown and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sanding Devices, of which the following is a specifieation.
This invention relates to improvements in devices for applying sand to railwaytracks to increase the tractive force of the wheels of railway cars, loco-motives, or the like, and has for one of its objects to increase the efficiency and utility of devices of this character.
Another object of the invention is to provide a simply constructed device whereby sand may be independently or simultaneously applied to the track either in advance of or at the rear of the wheels to provide for the increase of the traction when the cars are moving forwardly or backwardly.
Another object of the invention is to provide a simply constructed device of this character wherein all of the parts are rendered readily accessible for cleansing or repairs, and wherein broken or impaired parts may be readily displaced without discarding the unimpaired portions.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claim, and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention, Figure 1 is a side view of the improved device applied; Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view of the same.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the accompanying drawings by the same reference characters.
The improved device is designed for use in connection with railway cars, and may be applied without structural change to cars of different forms and cars arranged to be moved by any motive force, and may be applied to railway cars, ordinary street cars, trolley cars, locomotives, or the like.
The improved device comprises a casing or body 10 into one end of which the supply pipe 11 is conducted and in the opposite end of which a detachable plug 12 is located, the latter being designed to enable the device to be relieved from obstructions,

such as cinders, small stones or the like,
which may pass through the supply pipe 11. Formed in the opposite sides of the casing 10 at four points are internally threaded bosses 13 to receive the various pipes of the device. the diagonally opposite bosses 13 are the air nozzles 14l15 provided respectively with air pipes 16-17 leading from a suitable source of compressed air supply, the latter not being shown as it forms no part of the present invention. The nozzles 15- 14 extend into the casing 10 and nearly to the opposite side of the same and terminate relatively close to the centers of the remaining bosses 13, as represented in Fig. 2. Connected to the remaining bosses 13 are the discharge pipes 1819 through which the sand is conveyed to points adjacent to the rail represented at 23 and at opposite sides of the car wheel, the latter not being shown. At their discharge ends the nozzles 14 are formed with the walls of the orifices extending in parallel relations for a distance, as shown in Fig. 2, to confine the air and cause it to be discharged with greater force.
The pipes 1819 are curved downwardly and inwardly and terminate at 2122 close to the rail 23, and likewise relatively close to the tread of the wheel on opposite sides of the axle. The supply pipes are provided respectively with controlling valves 24-25 so that the air blast may be directed either simultaneously or independently through the pipes. By this means when the car is moving in one direction one of the pipes 19 only may be employed, and then when the car is moving in the opposite direction the air blast may be turned through the other pipe only, so that the sand will be delivered at one side of the wheel. Under certain conditions it may be necessary to supply the sand simultaneously at both sides of the wheel, and when this occurs both of the valves 24-25 will be opened, as will be obvious.
It will be obvious that a simply constructed, compact and complete device is produced, whereby the sand may be supplied. to the wheel at either side, 1ndependently, o-r simultaneously to both sides of the wheel, and thereby materially increase the efiiciency and utility of the device.
Any suitable means may be employed for suspending the casing 10 from the car, but
Connected to two of as the suspending means forms no part of the present invention it is not illustrated.
The improved device will be constructed wholly of metal and of any suitable size or capacity.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A sanding device including a vertically disposed open-ended casing having laterally extending interiorly threaded bosses projecting from the side wall thereof, a sand supply pipe communicating with the interior of the casing at the top thereof, a detachable plug forming a closure forthe lower end of the casing, air nozzles extending inwardly from the opposite sides of the casing and having flanges bearing against the adjacent bosses and threaded portions for engagement with the threads on said bosses, said nozzles being arranged in overlapped relation and disposed in vertical alinementwith each other, air conductors connected with the outer ends of the'nozzles, and discharge pipes arranged opposite the free ends of the air nozzles and provided with threaded terminals engaging the threaded walls of the adjacent bosses.
