METAL FILING- UNIT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application tiled May 11, 1911. Serial No. 626,600.
Patented J une t1 1912.
To al?. whom if may concern:
Be it known that I, ADoLi" H. Sonar- Ficur, a citizen of the United States, residing at Youngstown, in the county of Mahoning and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metal Filing Units, of which the following is a specification. i
This invention relates to the subject of .otiice furniture, and more particularly to tiling system devices. V
'To this end the invention has in vieW- a simple and novel improvement, in tiling cases or tiling units, which rovides means whereby the said case or unit. can be freely 1 handled upon a desk or table without marring or scratching the latter, while at the same time facilitating the handling the case or unit in setting the same down upon a desk, table, or other article of furniture and in lifting it from one position to another.
Accordingly, the invention resides .in a simple and practical ,rest which is specially ap licable to metal filing units so as to provi e the latter, in whatever form they may be, with rest feet or projections of suoli a character as to firmly and evenly support the unit upon the surface on which it is placed, while at the same time shieldin the latter from injury by cutting or serate ing. Also, it is the intention that the improved shielded rests shall possess the above mentioned functions wherever the filingunit may be placed or housed. l
-With these and other objects in view, which will readily appear to those familiar with the art, the same consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter pointed out, illustrated, and claimed. l
In the embodiment shown in the drawings,-Fignre l is a perspective lview of a card tiling unit e uipped with thp improvement contemplate by the present invention. Fig. 2 is a. detail sectional view through one of the rest attachments in the fornrn which it is preferably applied to a filing unit. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view similar to Fig. 2, but illustrating a modication that may be resorted to in constructing the unit with rests.
Like references designate corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawings. As indicated, the invention is ap licable to tiling cases or filing units of any 'ind or form, but is preferably employe in connection with metal filing units so as to prevent the latter from scratching or euttin' surfaces upon which they may be placeds. Hence, for illustrative purposes there is shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings a onedrawer ling unit or oase U such as ordinarily employed for tiling index cards, and to e uip the same with the present'invention, the ottoni wall 1 of the said unit is provided at several suitably arranged points with clearance holes 2, each of which holes' has associated therewith a foot piece* or plate 3. This foot piece or plate 3 is preferably ametal stampin having a pressedout rest projection 4 adapted to be placed so as to project through the clearance hole 2 therefor, and said foot piece or plate is further provided with a peripheral securing flange 5 overlying the upper surface of the bottompwall 1.
Another feature lof the invention resides in externally covering the foot. piece or plate 3 with a shield covering 6 of billiard cloth or other brous or non-scratching ma.;
terial that will not scratch any surface engaged thereby. This protective shield covermg 6, Without regard to the material of i which it is made, is preferably held in place as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, thatis to say, by having its edge portions clampeg--,`
between the flange 5 of the foot iece an the upper side of the bottom wal of the unit. The several elements referred to may be secured together in any suitable way, as
for instance by the rivets 7 shown in Flg. 2;.
The modification ofFig. 3 suggests the expedient of providing the bottom wall 1 with rests consisting of pressed-out rest projections or feet 3 to which a shieldmg covering may be applied by adhesive means or otherwise.
To provide for the stacking of umts, em-
each unit may have pressedinto the same depressed stacking seats 9 of the same form andvarrangement asthe rest projections of a. superposed unit..
I claim:
A flingunit having a clearance hole in its bottom Wall, a foot piece having a rest projection-protruding through said hole and 1o 21 securing ange secured to the bottom wall i upon the `inside thereof, and a, shield cover- `ing tting .the foot. .piece externally and clamped between the same and said bottom wall.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses. ADOLF H. SCHAFFERT. Witnesses:
H. R. GLENN, H. E. WHITE.
