FLY-ESCAPE FOR SCREENS.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRISON W. \Vnrxrr, a citizen of the United States, and a resi dent of Fort Wayne, in the county of Allen and State of Indiana, have invented a new and Improved Fly-Escape for Screens, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a screen for doors and windows of buildings so constructed as to permit the escape from the building of such flies and other insects as may be upon the inside and yet effectually prevent the entrance to the building of such flies and insects as may be on the outside.
Reference is to be had to the accompany ing drawings constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which Figure 1 shows a perspective view of a portion of a door or window screen enr bodying the invention and looking at the outer side thereof; Fig. 2 shows a portion of the top of a door or window screen some what enlarged looking at the inner side, a portion of the outer guard being broken away at the left hand end, and a portion of the frame being shown in section; and Fig. 3 shows a vertical. section taken on the line 3 3 in Fig. 1.
The screen comprises a frame A of the usual form, and made of any usual or preferred material. Within the frame A is secured the main panel B of the screen, constructed of the ordinary screen wire, the marginal edge b of which is received with in a rabbet- I) and beneath a cleat 7) all in a usual and well known manner. The panel B at or near its upper edge is provided with a line of openings C whereby to permit the flies or insects to pass through the screen panel B.
In order to insure that the flies or other insects will be permitted to pass through from the inside out, not from the outside in. the apparatus is provided with an inner guard D which is secured to the screen panel B by fastening devices (Z which pass through the screen panel B and through spacing blocks cl, the upper end of the blocks d being beveled as shown at (Z'-, and
the upper edge of the guard D being bent as shown at (i and having its upper edge 41 intermeshing with the screen panel B. The lower end (Z of the guard D is spaced away from the screen panel B so that an opening is provided for the passage of the flies or other insects upward beneath the guard D and between the guard D and the screen panel B. The upper beveled end d of the guard D covers the row of apertures C.
Upon the outer surface of the screen panel B is a guard E provided with a row of openings 6 surrounded by eyelets e. The guard E is fastened to the screen panel B by fastenings c which pass through the upper edge of the guard E and through spacing blocks 6 corresponding to the spacing block 0?, and through the screen panel B. The lower end of the guard E is bent toward the screen panel B as shown at E and its extreme lower edge has an internicshing engagement with the screen panel B below the line of perforations C. Preferably the perforations C will be displaced or staggered with relation to the perforations 6.
In operation, the screen being inserted in the door or window of a building, with the guard B upon the inside of the build ing, it will be apparent that a fly or insect climbing up the screen panel B may enter between the guard D and the screen panel and pass through the opening C, thence through an opening 6 in the guard E and escape from the building. Because the openings C and e are displaced with relation to each other, a fly or insect will not be likely to find entrance to the building from the outside.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
A fly escape for screens, comprising a screen panel having a line of openings near its upper edge, a guard extending across the inside of the screen panel near its upper edge, spaced therefrom, and open along its lower edge and intermeshing with the screen panel above the line of openings therein, a guard extending across the outer side of the screen panel above the inner guard, its lower edge intermeshing with In testimony whereof I have signed my the screen panel below the line of openings name to this specification in the presence of therein, a line of openings in the outer two subscribing Witnesses.
