FURNACE-COVER.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES S. ROBINSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at- Youngstown, in the county of Mahoning and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Furnace-Covers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to covers for pit and other furnaces, and its object is to pro vide for such covers simple means for first lifting the cover in its horizontal condition slightly from the furnace top and then moving the cover horizontally.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan of my invention; Fig. 2, a central vertical section of Fig. l, with the cover shown partly in side elevation; Fig. 3, a cross-section taken immedi ately to the right of the cover 3, Figs. 1 and 2; and Fig. 4:, a half end elevation and a half cross-section on the line IVIV, Fig. 1.
On the drawings, 1 represents a furnace top having the top opening 2 which is provided with the cover 3, adapted to rest on the furnace top.
I provide two parallel metal frames 4, having the lower rails or tracks 5 and the upper rails or tracks 6. These frames have their front ends, which are those adjacent, or nearest, to the cover 3, opposite the center of the cover so that, when the cover is lifted, it may be moved laterally between the frames.
7 is a rod or shaft on the ends of which are mounted the two wheels 8, adapted to travel on the lower rails or tracks 5. The sleeve 8 is mounted axially on the shaft 7 so as to oscillate thereon. Two levers 9 extend over and transversely of the sleeve 8' and have their forward ends connected by the bolts 10 to the top of the cover. The rear ends of the levers 9 have each a wheel 11 which travels along the under face of the adjacent track 6. The sleeve 8 has be neath each lever and slightly in front of the axial center of the sleeve a lug 12 which is adapted to a recess in the under side of the adjacent lever 9. When the cover rests on the furnace top, the levers rest on the lugs 12 while the wheels 11 bear up against the rails 6.
13 is an arm projecting up from the sleeve 8 and having the forward end of the piston rod 14 pivotally connected thereto. The
piston rod is connected to the piston 15 in the cylinder 16.
The forward ends of the tracks 6 extend upwardly and forwardly in arcs of circles having their centers in the axis of the sleeve 8'. The arms 17 extend upwardly and rearwardly from the sleeve 8' and have wheels 18 which bear on the said arc-shaped extensions 19 of the tracks 6, the wheels be ing near the upper end of the extensions 19 when the cover is on the furnace top.
The levers 9 are connected by the bar 20 which lies over the rear edge of the cover and has therein the bolt 21 having its head in an undercut slot in the cover. The nuts 22 on the bolt are a slight distance above the bar 20 when the cover rests on the furnace top. The rod or link 23 is pivoted to the arm 13 and extends forwardly through the hole 24 in the bar 20 and has thereon the nuts 25 located a short distance in front of the bar 20 when the cover is on the furnace top.
26, 26 are tie-bars connecting the frames 4, the rear tiebar serving to support one end of the cylinder 16.
The operation is as follows When it is desired to move the cover 3 from over the furnace opening 2, the piston 15 is caused to travel backward, that is, to the right, in a manner well understood. The piston moves the piston rod which rotates the arm 13 to the right. The movement of this arm causes the sleeve 8 to rotate slightly to the right, thereby causing the lugs 12 to exert power upwardly on the under side of the levers 9. The wheels 11 act as fulcra for the levers 9 during the lifting action of the lugs 12, which cause the forward ends of the levers 9 to lift the cover vertically a short distance above the furnace top, the nuts 22 being adjusted so that the bar 20 will engage the bottom nut when the cover has been lifted to the maximum or the desired distance by the lugs 12. The bolt 21 serves to steady the cover during its subsequent movements. When the levers 9 have been lifted to their highest or their desired position, the right-hand nut 25 engages with the left-hand side of the bar 20, and the arms 17 move downwardly so that the wheels 18 pass off from the arc-shaped track extensions 19 and into line with the tracks 6. Further movement of the piston 15 causes the link 23 to move the cover to the right, its weight being'borne by the Wheels 8, as the wheels 11 and 18 travel to the right in engagementwvith'the under side of the tracks 6. The wheels 11 prevent the levers oscillating on the lugs 12,-and the wheels 18 prevent the rotation of the sleeve and the lugs 12 to the left. It is thus seen that the cover is first vertically raised slightly above the furnace top and then moved laterally in its horizontal position; and that, during the lateral movement of the cover, it is secure against vertical movement.
The shaft 7 and the wheels 8 form a truck to support and move horizontally the cover 3, the levers 9, and other associated parts.
I claim- 1. A furnace cover, a lever having one end connected to the cover, a truck ar ranged between the ends of the lever, a motor, and means carried by the truck, cooperative with the lever and the motor for first lifting the portion of the lever intermediate of its ends and then imparting a horizontal movement to the lever,
2. A furnace cover, a lever having one end connected to the cover, a truck arranged between the ends of the lever, a mo tor, and a second lever mounted on the truck and cooperative with the motor and the first lever to lift the portion of the lever between its ends and to impart a horizontal move ment to the lever.
3. A furnace cover, a lever having one end connected to the cover, a truck, a motor, and a second lever mounted on the truck and movable with respect to the lever, one portion-of the second lever being operatively connected to the motor and another portion being arranged to tilt the lever so as to lift the cover upon the actuation of the motor.
4. A furnace cover, a lever having one end connected to the cover, a truck arranged between the ends of the lever, a motor, a second lever mounted on the truck and cooperative with the motor and the first lever to lift the portion of the lever between its ends and to impart a horizontal movement to the lever, and means preventing the horizontal movement of the lever until the cover has been lifted.
5. A furnace cover, a lever having one end connected to the cover, a truck arranged between the ends of the lever, a motor, a second lever mounted on the truck and co operative with the motor and the first lever to lift the portion of the lever between its ends and to impart a horizontal movement to the lever, an arm connected to travel with the second lever, and means cooperative with the arm for preventing horizontal movement of the first lever until the cover has been lifted.

A furnace cover, a lever having one end connected to the cover, a truck arranged between the ends of the lever, a motor, a second lever mounted on the truck and cooperative with ,the motor and the first lever to lift the portion of the lever between its ends and to impart a horizontal movement to the lever, an arm connected to travel with the second lever, and an arc-shaped guiding abutment for the arm to prevent the hori zontal movement of the first lever until the cover has been lifted.
7, A furnace cover,'a lever having one end connected to the cover, a truck arranged between ,the ends of the lever, a motor, a second lever mounted on the truck and cooperative wit-h the motor and the first lever to lift the portion of the lever between its ends and to impart a horizontal movement to the lever, an arm connected to the second lever, a guiding abut-ment to prevent the horizontal travel of the first lever until "the cover has been lifted, and an inverted horizontal track for the arm at the end of the guiding abutment.
8. A cover for a furnace, a lever connected to the cover, a motor, connections between the motor and the lever for causing the lever to lift the cover, and a'lost-mot-ion connection between the cover and the motor oaeratin to transfer lateral movement to the cover at the conclusion of the lifting movement thereof.
9. A cover for the furnace, a truck movable toward and from the same, a lever connected to the cover, a cam on the truck for lifting the lever, means for actuating the cam and for moving the truck horizontally, and a lost-motion connection between the cover and the cam-actuating means adapted to transfer its motion to the cover when the cam has lifted the cover.
10. A cover for a furnace, a truck movable toward and from the cover, a lever connected to the cover, a lever-lifting device on the truck, means having horizontal travel for actuating the lever-lifting device, a lost-motion connection between the cover and the said means for stopping'the motion of the lever-lifting device and thereupon for connectin the cover and the said means rigidly toget er.
11. A cover for a furnace, a truck movable toward and from the furnace, a horizontal track therefor, a second horizontal track, a lever having one end guided on the under side of the second track, the other end connected to the cover, and its intermediate portion lying over the truck, an oscillatory device on the truck for lifting the said intermediate portion of the lever and the connected cover, an arm attached to the said device and arranged to be in 11119 with the second track at the conclusion of the lever-lifting operation, a horizontally movable powereleinent connected to oscillate the said device, and a lost-motion link connected to the power element and adapted to transfer the motion of the said element to the cover and the truck, the said arm engaging the under side of the second track while the truck is moving.
12. A cover for a furnace, a truck, a lever carried thereby and connected to the cover, a motor connected to the truck and adapted to give the lever ,an oscillatory motion to raise the cover and then a horizontal motion, an arm rocked relatively to the lever by the motor during the said oscillatory motion, a
track having an upper arc-sha ed extension to guide the arm hile rocke and to prevent the truck from traveling, the track having a horizontalijportion on the under side of which the said arm is guided during the horizontal motion: of the truck.
