BOLSTER FOR RAILWAY-CARS.
chester and State of New York, have in- ,vented certain new and useful Improvements in Bolsters for Railway-Cars, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in holsters for railway cars, and it consists in the novel features and structure hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The object of my invention is to produce a body bolster capable of withstanding the necessary strains and so constructed as to be of minimum weight and capable of ready and economical manufacture. l construct my body bolster mainly of 4Z-beams suitably matched and connected together and carrying the necessary center plate and other features incident to body bolsters.
The invention will be fully understood from the detailed description hereinafter presented, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a body bolster constructed in accordance with and embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a top view, partly broken away and partly in section, of the same; Fig. 3 is a central vertical longitudinal section of the same on the dotted line 3 3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a central `transverse section of the same, on a larger scale, on the dotted line 4 4 of Fig.
1, and Fig. 5 is a vertical transverse section of the same on the dotted line 5 5 of Fig. 1.
The bolster comprises parallel longitudinal side Z-beams 10 extending throughout the length of the bolster and having secured upon their upper horizontal outwardly projecting flanges a top plate 11 rand upon their lower inwardly projecting flanges a bottom plate 12; and below the central portion of the beams 10 the bolster is provided with short Z-beams 13 having inwardly projecting flanges secured to the aforesaid bottom plate 12 and the inwardly projecting flanges of the beams 10 and outwardly projecting flanges to which is riveted a plate 14 and a center bearing 15. wardly at their lower edges from the center plate 15 to the side bearings 16, the latter being of customary construction, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3.
The beams 10 are plain straight Z-beams arranged parallel with each other and suitably spaced apart and having their upper flanges projecting outwardly in opposite directions and their lower flanges extended inwardly toward each other, and these beams 10 have secured to them the lowers central structure comprising the Z-beams 13, plate 12, plate 14 and center plate 15, the said beams 13 being in the same vertical plane with the beams 10 and having their upper flanges extended inwardly toward each other and their lower flanges projected outwardly in a directio-n from each other.
Upon the ends of the bolster are secured suitable castings affording side-sill supports 17 and truss rod saddles 18, and within the central part of the upper portion of the bolster are provided filler pieces 19 affording a suitable bearing for the center' pin, while within the lower central portion of the bolster and between the beams 13 are provided corresponding filler pieces 20 which coperate with the filler pieces 19 in affording the aforesaid bearing for the center pin. The filler pieces 19 are riveted to the vertical facing sides of the beams 10 and extend vertically from the top plate 11 to the inwardly extending lower flanges of said beams, and the filler pieces 20 are in vertical alinement with said filler pieces 19 and riveted tothe sides of the beams 13 and extend vertically from the lower plate 14 to the inwardly projecting upper flanges of said beams 13, whereby said filler-pieces are enabled to provide a suitable bearing for a center-pin and also cooperate with the Z-beams and plates in creating a very durable and eiiicient central structure for the bolster. The top plate 11, intermediate plate 12 and lower plate 14, are vertically apertured in line with the bearing afforded by the filler pieces 19, 20. The center plate 15 is of customary construction and requires no special description.
The bolster constructed as shown and described comprises few parts easily shaped and assembled, and said bolster will withstand all the usual strains to which body holsters are subjected, while at the same `30 said main time it is of minimum weight. 1. two main parallel Z-beams having their upper flanges extended outwardly from and their lower flanges inwardly toward each other, top and bottom plates secured to said lflanges, a lower structure directly secured to the lower central part of said main beams comprising auxiliary Z-beams on the same vertical planes with and less in dept-h than said main Z-beams and having their upper `flanges*extended inwardly toward and their lower ianges outwardly from each other, a lower plate (14) secured to the outwardly extending lower flanges of said auxiliary beams, a center bearing -plate secured to said auxiliary beams and lower plate, a filler secured to and between the sides of said main Z-beams and extending vertically between the lower inwardly extending flanges there- Yof and said top plate, and a filler secured Ito. and between the sides of said auxiliary Z- beams and extending vertically between the upper inwardly extending anges thereof and said lower plate '(14), said top, bottom and lower plates and center bearing plate having alined vertical openings to receive and aiford a bearing for a center pin, and said auxiliary beams being cut away on lines diverging upwardly and outwardly from said center bearing plate to said main -Z-beams; substantially as set forth.
