LESTER IVI. RICH, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
CHICKEN-COOP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 2,' 1911. Serial No. 652,330.
Patented June 11, 1912.
To aZZ whom t mayconcern Be it known, that I, LESTER l/l. R101-I, a citizen of the United States of America, resi dent of Indianapolis, county of Marion, State of Indiana, havevinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Chicken-(loops, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of coops in which it is desirable to confine the mother hen and permit the chicks to roam at large, and the special features of the present invention relate to means whereby the chicks and the hen may have access to the feed and water trough from either the interior of the coop or the exterior of the coop, as more fully set forth.
Figure l, is the perspective view of my improved coop; Fig. 2, a fragmentary sectional view through the water trough; Fig. 3, a horizontal sectional view of the coop with the door partly opened; Fig. 4:, a vertical sectional view of the coop taken through the feed trough.
In the drawing annexed, a, designates the body of the coop which is closed at the top and also at the bottom, the bottom Zn being removable for the purpose of cleaning, since suitable perforations c are provided for ventilation purposes, and the side wall of the coop is provid-ed with a large door opening d, for egress and ingress of the hen, and also with an adjacent small opening c for use of the chicks, the two doorways are adapted to be opened and closed by a door f, slidably mounted on the exterior of the coop, and of suficient extent to close both the openings cZ and c. This door is provided with two openings near the floor of the coop, these openings being lettered respectively f and g. Attached to the outer face of the door, opposite the opening f, is a water trough It, and attached to the door coincident with the opening g, is a feed trough Z, this position of these troughs being such as to permit the chicks to obtain water either from the interior of the coop or the exterior thereof. Attached to the water trough is a water tank j, the construction being such that the water shall feed automatically and keep the water at a normal level in the trough. The lower or exit end of the storage tank j, is sealed in the water in the trough, entering the water about midway between the inner and outer walls of the trough, so that the hen and the chicks may have access to the trough from the interior of the coop, as well as the exterior thereof. This trough and its tank are connected rigidly together and slidably mounted in vertical ways le, fastened to the exterior of the door, this means of attaching the water supply rendering the same detachable from the door for purposes of cleaning and refilling.
Attached to the feed trough e', is the storage box Z, for the feed, the lower end of the box terminating in t-he trough, and being so arranged as to automatically deliver' the feed by gravity as the same is consumed from the trough. The lower end of this feed box is tapered and arranged to enter the feed trough about midway between its inner and its outer wall, so that the hen and the chicks may readily reach the food in the trough from either the inside or the outside of the coop when the door is closed and the opening g is brought opposite the main door opening CZ. This feed box Z is rigidly attached to the trough, and the whole is mounted removably upon the door by means of vertical guideways fm, fastened to the door.
It will be observed that the door may be adjusted to confine the hen and yet permit the chicks to pass in and out from the supplementary doorway c, and it will also be observed that when the door is closed to confine the hen and the chicks in the coop, access from the interior both to the water and the feed can be had, this being especially desirable in that the hen and the chicks may have food and drink early in the mornings before the attendant has opened the coop.
It will be observed that when the door is closed over both the main opening Z and the chick opening e, the chick opening c will permit access to the watering trough, It will be understood that additional openings for ventilation, etc., may be provided. For convenience in filling the feed box Z, the same is provided with a cover Z, and in filling the water tank y' it is removed from the door and inverted and filled.
That- I claim is:
l. A chicken coop provided with a doorway and with a movable door adapted to close the same, this door being provided with two openings adapted to coincide with the door opening when the door is closed, a water trough attached to the exterior of the doorl coincident with one of the said open-v ings, and a feed trough attached to the door coincident With the other opening.
2. A chicken coop provided With a main large opening and an adjacent smaller opening, in combination with a door slidable over said openings and provided With two openings one of which is adapted to coincide with the aforesaid smaller opening and both of which are adapted to coincide With the main opening, a feed trough attached to the door and coinciding With one of said openings therein7 and a Water trough attached to the door over the other opening in the door, for the purposes setY forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of tWo Witnesses. LESTER BI. BICI-I. Witnesses: Y
