LIQUID-PUMP.
V Specification of Letters Patent. Patelited June 11, 1912. Application filed NaivemberlQ, 1904. Serial No. 232,097.
' To all who'r't it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Lewis HALLOCK NASH. citizen of the United States, and resident of South Norwalk, in the county of 'Fairfield and State of Conne'cticuhhaveinvented a new and useful Improvement in Liquid- Pumps, of which the following is a speci: fication.
My invention relates to improvements'in liquid pumps and consists in certain novel improvements in construction and operation, all of which will be pointed out in the claims concluding this specification.
I will now describe the drawings which illustrate In invention in its preferred form, it being understood that I do not confine my inventlon to the exact form of structure shown, since various modifications may be made without departing from the spiritand scope of my invention, the particular features of novelty which constitute my improvement will be particularly pointed out in the claims concluding these specifications. RJ'erring to the drawings :Figure 1. is a longitudinal section through a case-chamber and wheel having my improvements. Fig. 2. is across-section of the same.
The case 4. is of a form circular in section havin an outlet passa e 6.. which joins the case-c amber tangentia ly, and said passage is also preferably made'of an-enlarging section for a purpose now well understood. The inlet passage 7. enters the central portion of the case-chamber through a port opening 8. which port is located on the side of the shaft opposlte to the outlet passage 6.
9.-is the propeller wheel, which is mounted on a, shaft 10. and said shaft revolves in bearings eccentric to the case-chamber, so that the, wheel makes a joint with one side of the case but leaves a passage on the opposite side." This wheelhas projecting arms 11. which are preferably curved at the outer ends in the direction of the rotation of the backward against the motion of the wheel will be can ht upon the curved ends of these blades an driven up with great force against the center of the wheel. The effect 0 this is to retard the flow of the water and toincrease the driving force of the wheel.
.and ,this takes place in view of the fact that there is no escape for the water through the .port at the center of the wheel because the lades make a joint-forming contact with the case walls and effectually separate the water from the inlet port. The whole force, therefore, of this reaction is exerted inan opposite directionto force the water forward in the direction ofthe, wheel, and this actionincreases the pressure over that which would be due to velocity alone to a very material extent.
Suppose, now that the wheel be caused to revolve in the direction of the arrow; as the wheel blades move forward the spaces included between the case walls and a pair of arms of the 'wheel will enlarge on the side 14, of the" wheel, while upon the side 12, the spaces will be contracting. It is true that the blades do not actually touch the case walls but the spaces may be considered as completed by a prolongation of the blades, and in operation the inertia of the water that fills the chamber will serve to secure the joint between the ends of th'eblad-es and the case walls so as to roduce a displacing eflect. This actionbemg understood, it follows that, as the wheel revolves, the spaces on the side 14 ofthe wheel will be enlarging and that the water will fiow into these spaces through the port 8 until a wheel space arrives at the position 13,, when the blade passes over the edge of said port closing communication -therewith. As the wheel continues to revolve the water will be compressed in the side 12, of the wheel chamber and forced out of the passage 6. In addition to the pressure produced by this displacin action just described the effect of centri gal force is also present, the same as in the usual forms of centrifugal pumps, and these two effects reinforce each other, and I have found by actual test that the pressure produced by the revolution ofqny improved pump at a given speed is more than double that which would be produced in an ordinary form of centrifugal pump.
A difi'erence between my invention and the ordinary form of centrifugal pump will be seen in that the inlet passage: of the water does not extend around the center of the case chamber thelop ening is restricted to that portion o the chamber that is enlarging and is separatefrom the portion of-the case chamber. that is contracting. Therefore the 1 pressure produced in the contracting portion ofijt h e case can not'j find escape "except'hy, either forcing itselffbackward against the v motion.'of the=wheel, or through the outlet.
