FUSE AND ADJUSTING-KEY THEREFOR.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ULRICH. IVILOK, a subj ect of the Emperor of Germany, and a resident of Essen-on-theRuhr, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fuses and Adjusting-Keys Therefor, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to fuses and adjusting keys therefor and is an improvement on the fuse and adjusting key forming the subject matter of the copending application of Friedrich Ziegenfuss, filed Oct. 7, 1907, Serial Number 396345.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 shows the adjusting key in section, the fuse being shown in dotted lines; Fig. 2 is a top view of the key, partly in section and Fig. 3 is a side view of the fuse, partly in section.
The main difference between the adjusting key according to the present invention and the key of the aforesaid application consists in the arrangement and formation of the bolt M which in its securing position prevents the adjusting key being lifted off the fuse. The annular body A of the adjusting key is provided with an arm A and contains a ring 13 which can rotate in the body A but is held from axial displacement therein. The ring B can be adjusted rela tively to the body A through the medium of a worm C which is journaled in the body A and which meshes with the toothed periphery b of the ring. In the ring 13 is swingingly arranged a spring-pressed latch b for which a notch 6Z1 is provided in the fuse base D. The body A is provided with a stud o which it diametrically opposite to the arm A and which fits in a notch 6 provided in the rotatable composition ring E of the fuse. The latch b and the corresponding notch (Z and also the stud o and the corresponding notch e are formed in such a manner that the latch Z2 and the stud o can pass out of engagement with the corresponding notch (Z and 6 when the adjusting key is withdrawn from the fuse.
The relatively wide bolt M is provided with a projection or edge m which projects forwardly from the front face of the key and the bolt is mounted in the body A of the key in such a manner that the projection m is adapted to slide in a circumferential groove k (Fig. in the fuse while the fuse is being adjusted. is formed through the enlargement of the joint is between the rotatable composition ring E and the fixed composition ring I; of the fuse. In order to make it possible to arrange the bolt M in the aforesaid manner in the key-body A the key-body is of such height that, when the key is placed on the fuse, the key-body surrounds not only the rotatable composition ring E but also the lower part of the fixed composition ring K. As in the key of the aforesaid application the arrangement of the bolt M is furthermore selected in such a manner that the bolt can move in a direction radial to the axis of the body I and is located diametrically opposite to the nose (a as already explained. The seat a in the key-body A which serves to receive the bolt M is open at the top and is covered by a plate N which holds the bolt on its seat. The bolt has a projection m which serves as a handle and projects through an opening a (Fig. l) in the plate N. The walls a and a of the opening 92 limit the movement of the bolt. The bolt is further provided with a projection m which projects into a recess a in the arm A of the key-body and abuts against a spring 972; arranged in the recess (4 the recess being covered by the plate N. The spring we' tends to hold the bolt in its securing position. The arm A of the body A is provided with a handle L.
After the key has been adjusted, it is placed upon the fuse in such a position that the nose of engages with the notch 6 lVhen this takes place, the bolt N is forced back into its bearing and then the projection m of the bolt M under the action of the spring 127/ comes into engagement with the groove is. In this position the adjusting key secured from being lifted off the fuse. After the adjusting key has been placed .on the fuse the key is turned by means of the handle L in the direction of the arrow as (Fig. 2) until the latch o enters the notch (Z in the fuse base D. The desired adjustment has been imparted to the fuse and no more turning is possible. During the turning of the key theprojection m of the bolt M slides in the groove k After the fuse has'been adjusted the bolt is, by means of the handle m moved toward the handle L to such an extent that the handle of hits the wall 71 of the opening 12 in the plate N, whereby the projection m of the bolt M is withdrawn from the groove 75 and the adjusting key can then be lifted off the fuse.
The advantage of the improved adjusting key over the key of the aforesaid applica tion consists in the fact that the notch which is provided for the bolt, in the composition ring, can be done a *ay with.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is 1. An adjusting key for fuses comprising setting members and means for coupling said members with the fixed and movable parts respectively of a fuse, and a retaining device for the adjusting key independent of said coupling means and adapted to engage within a circumferential groove of the fuse and hold the setting key against displace ment from the fuse.
2. An adjusting key for fuses comprising setting members and means for coupling said members with the fixed and movable parts respectively of a fuse, a retaining device for the adjusting key independent of said coupling means and adapted to engage within a circumferential groove of the fuse and hold said setting key against displacement from the fuse, and a member on the retaining device through which it is removed from engaging position.
3. An adjusting key for fuses comprising an annular setting member provided with a means for coupling it with the adjustable fuse part, and a manually releasable bolt adapted to engage a circumferential groove of the fuse and having a permanently fixed angular distance from said coupling means for preventing the key being lifted off the fuse.
4. An adjusting key for fuses comprising an annular setting member provided with a means for coupling it with the adjustable fuse part, and a manually releasable bolt situated permanently opposite to said coupling means and adapted to engage a circumferential groove of the fuse for preventing the key being lifted off the fuse.
5. An adjusting key for fuses comprising an annular setting member provided with a means for coupling it with the adjustable fuse part, and a manually releasable bolt adapted to engage a circumfenential groove between the fixed and adjustable fuse part and having a permanently fixed angular distance from said coupling means for prevent ing the key being lifted off the fuse.
(3. In an adjusting key for fuses, the combination with an annular body portion adapted to girdle a projectile and provided with a nose for engaging an adjustable fuse ring of the projectile; a ring rotatably mounted in said annular body and provided with means for rotating it relatively to said body to set it, said rotatable ring being provided with a nose for engaging the stationary fuse ring; a radial arm projecting from the upper portion of said annular body; and a radially sliding bolt in said arm, said bolt being adapted to releasably engage a groove on the fuse.
7. An adjusting key for fuses, having an arm, and a securing means for said key, said means comprising a bolt mounted to have sliding movement within a recess in the upper surface of said arn'i and adapted to releasably engage in a groove on the fuse of the projectile, said bolt having a member projecting therefrom in convenient position to be engaged by the hand of the operator.
8. An adjusting key for fuses, having an arm and a securing means for said key, said "ieans comprising a bolt mounted to have sliding movement within a groove in the upper face of said arm and adapted to engage within the fuse rings of a projectile, a plate on said arm overlying the groove and keeping the bolt in position, and a member on said bolt projecting through the plate into convenient position. for engagement by the hand of the operator.
9. In an adjusting key for fuses, the combination with an annular member adapted to engage an adjustable fuse ring of a projectile, a ring rotatably carried by said member, said ring being adapted to engage a stationary fuse ring of the projectile, and a radially disposed bolt mounted to have sliding movement within a groove in the upper face of said member, and a plate overlying said bolt and having a perforation, an upwardly disposed member projecting through said perforation and into convenient position for gripping by the hand of the operator, said bolt being adapted to releasably engage in a groove in said projwtile.
