SPOOIi-PACKAGE FOR SILK; &c.
Specifieation of Letters Patent.
Patented June 11, 1912.
Application filed December 26, 1911. Serial No. 667,596.
fication, taken in connection with the ,ac-
companying drawing, which forms part of the same.
This invention relates especially to spool packages for silk or other thread or other. material in which a spool of wood or other material is provided With caps preferably of glossy, resilient sheet celluloid having outer retaining flanges provided with inturned gripping edges to grip the spool rims and also if desired with central alining flanges to cooperate with the hole in the spool, said outer flanges lying in contact with or adjacent to the silk or other material on the spool body so as to form an efiective and pleasing contrast therewith and preserve and promote its desirable condition. b
In the accompanying drawing showing in a somewhat diagrammatic manner an illustrative embodiment of this invention, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through an empty spool. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a similar wound spool, and Fig. 3 is an end view thereof.
The spool, which may of course, be of any desired form, construction and material, is indicated in Fig. l as formed of wood and comprising the body l and rims 8 at either end thereof and being provided with the usual axial hole 3 so as to correspond substantially with the usual spools on which silk thread, etc., are wound for the retail trade. Suitable protecting caps, preferably of celluloid or other moisture repelling material such as parchmentized or otherwise toughened paper glazed with a suitable celluloid varnish or other sizing may be secured to the spool ends in any desired way and as indicated these caps 2 may be provided with the integral outer retaining fianges 4: preferably formed with inturned gripping edges so as to be readily forced over the spool rims Sand grippingly engage the same so as to hold the caps in position while allowing their ready removal if desired, although in some cases suitable glue or the like may be used to secure the caps on the spool ends in which case it is, of course, unnecessary to secure such an effective gripping actionV byv the special form of cap flanges. 'The thin sheet of resilient celluloid is also preferably formed with a central alining flange 5 of such size as to cooperate with the hole 3 and more securely hold the cap in position as well as give a more nished appearance to thev spool end. As indicated in Fig. .1, these alining flanges project inwardly at each end of the hole spindle when the spool is being unwound, the smoothness of the cap upon which the spool rests also serving to reduce friction. One or both of the cap fianges may be formed with a suit- 'able thread notch or slit 6, which may eX- tend into the wood rim of the spool, so as to receive the end'of the thread 7, as shown in Fig. 2, and the sap so reinforces the holding slit as to prevent its splitting out which is a frequent source of annoyance in ordinary wooden spools. Suitable trademark, advertising or other matter may, of course, be readily stamped or applied to the cap' ends, which are in close contact with the ends of the spool itself and' whose polished, glossy surface give a highly desirable appearance to the package. The juxtaposition of the glossy, celluloid cap flanges and the thread on the spool body is a highly desirable featureflof such a thread package especially if white celluloid is used so as to form an effective contrast with colored thread or the like. Such outwardly projecting flanges of celluloidor the like are further more desirable 'because the smooth surface and the peculiar moisture -repelling action of celluloid or the like minimizes the accumulation of moisture and dust or dirt to the detriment of the `t-hread and the material impairment of its appearance, the smooth surface also minimizes the rubbing or fraying of the thread which may occur with rough wood.
Having described this invention, in connection with illustrative embodiments, forms, proportions, arrangements and materials, to the details of which disclosure the iuvention is not of course to be limited, what is claimed as new band what is desired to be secured by Letters Patent is set forth in the appended claims.
l. A spool package of silk thread and so forth comprising a spool having a body and integral rims, silk thread wound upon Said body between said rims and caps of glossy,
thin, resilient sheet celluloid having'outer retaining fianges formed with inturned gripping edges to embrace and'grip said rims and hold said caps thereon and having central alining fianges to enter the hole of the spool and have alining action `in connection therewith, said outerflanges projecting radially beyond and lying in juxtaposition to said thread and forming an effective con-. trasting appearance in relation theretoV andV also having a protecting action thereon.
2. A spool package for thread land so forth comprising a spool having a body and rims, thread wound upon said body between said rims and caps of glossy, thin, resilient sheet celluloid having outer retaining flanges formed with inturned gripping edges to embrace and grip said rims and hold said' caps thereon and having central alining flanges to enterA the hole of the spool, said outer flanges lying in juxtaposition to said thread and forming an effective contrasting appearance in connection therewith and also having a protecting action in relation thereto.
3. A spool package for thread and so and rims, material upon' said body between said rims and caps of glossy, thin Sheets of sition to said material and formlng an eifectiv contrasting appearance in connection therewith and also having a protecting action in relation thereto.
A spool package for thread and so forth comprising a spool having a body and rims, material upon said body between said rims and caps formed of glossy, thin Sheets of moisture repellent material having` outer retaining portions embracing said rims, there being a reinforced thread notch formed in one of said retaining portions and in the corresponding rim, said outer portions lying in juxtaposition to said material on said body and being of a color free from apparent tinging effect in connection therewith and also having a protecting action in relation thereto.
