Be it known that I, IVY H. ENGLAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hendersonville, in the county of Henderson and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wagon-Standards, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to wagon standards and the object of the invention is to provide a standard which may be fitted over the ends of the bolster of a wagon so as to prevent the usual inconvenience caused by the breaking or spreading of the ordinary wooden or iron bound standards which are adapted to fit in sockets formed in the bolsters.

A further object is to render the device removable so that they may be readily taken off inorder to load heavy bodies or objects upon the bed of the wagon.

A still further object is to construct the standard wholly of metal so that the lia? bility of breakage will be lessened and the device may be readily manipulated and held upon the bolsters.

Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description, and it will be understood that changes in the specific structure shown and described may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In the drawings: Figure 1 is a front elevation of a section of a bolster with my improved standard applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof detached from the bolster. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view on'line 4:4: of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of a modified form of the invention. Fig. 6 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 6-6 of Fig. 5.

Referring to the drawings in which like reference characters designate similar parts throughout the several views, 10 indicates a portion of a bolster of the usual construction as employed in connection with wagon bodies and to which my invention is adapted to be applied. As is shown in Fig. 1, the bolsters are preferably tapered toward their outer ends so as to receive the lower looped portion 11 of a strap bolt 12 which has its upper end 13 threaded and formed of round stock which is flattened and separated to provide the loop 11 so as to form portion 16 for a purpose to be presently described. The upper end of the strip of metal comprising the standard 16 is bent outwardly to form a horizontal portion 18 which is then extended downwardly and outwardly to form a wedge portion 19 which is then ofiset downwardly and extended in front of the upturned portions 20, as shown at 21 and provided at its lower end with an outwardly beveled sharpened end 22. A washer 23 and suitable nuts 24 are disposed on the threaded end 13 of the strap bolt and tightly engaged upon the horizontal portion 18 so as to support the strap bolt in position, but in order to allow a sufficient movement of the loop 11 to properly engage and disengage the same upon the bolster, the said threaded end of the bolt is extended loosely through the apertured portion 18.

Secured between the portion 20 and the inner portion 16 adjacent the lower base portion 17 is a guide loop 25 of approximately rectangular formation and having its side walls tapered outwardly and rounded at its lower edge as shown at 26,

so that it will be engaged by the tapered or diverging portions 14: of the strap bolt throughout its width and thereby provide a more rigid bearing surface as well as a more desirable guide. A bolt 27 is disposed through suitable alined apertures and through the guide loop 25 and is secured in position by means of a binding nut 28, so as to station the guide loop against movement.

A pair of stake rings 29 are carried upon the downwardly and outwardly directed portion 19 of the standard and is secured thereto by means of a strip of metal 30 bolted to the inner face of the said portion of the standard and offset to provide ears 31 through which the rings are pivotally engaged.

The device as thus described may be cheaply constructed of metal and the provision of the strap bolt permits the attachment of the standard to bolsters of different sizes and they are positively held from disengagement by means of the bur 15 and the sharpened end 22 which are adapted to bite into the bolster and thus prevent standard are provided with inwardly turned feet 33 and 34:, said feet being arranged in spaced relation so that in assembling the device a pathway will be formed so that the strap bolt 35 may pass therethrough to the guide loop 33 until its upper screwthreaded portion passes through the opening 36 in the top of the standard to be engaged by suitable clamping nuts. The outer portion of the standard is formed with enlargements 37 and 38, having openings 39 and 40 formed therein so that the rings 41 and 42 may be pivotally secured. at these points.

What is claimed is:

1. A wagon standard comprising the combination with a bolster, of a strap bolt having a lower looped portion engaged therearound and provided with a forwardly extending bur adapted to engage the lower surface of the bolster, said strap bolt being formed wit-h a threaded upper end and intermediate upwardly converging portions, a standard proper comprising a section of metal having its lower end extended transversely through said loop to form a base and then directed upwardly, the upper portion of said strip being provided with an apertured transversely extending portion adapted to receive'the threaded end of the strap bolt, binding nuts engaged thereon, said strap being then extended downwardly in front of the last named upturned portion and sharpened, a guide loop disposed between the lower ends of the portions of the standard and a bolt disposed through the said portions and loop for holding the loop stationary.

2. A wagon standard, comprising a strap bolt having an upper threaded end and having a loop at its lower end for receiving a wagon bolster, a standard proper having guide portions embracing the strap bolt and Y having a horizontal portion slidably en gaged on the upper end of the strap bolt, and clamp nuts engaged on the threaded portion of the bolt above the horizontal portion of the standard for forcing the standard downward relative to the bolt to clamp the standard against the bolster.

3. The combination with a strap bolt having a loop at its lower end for engaging a bolster and havingits upper end threaded, of a standard proper having a basal portion disposed between the arms of the loop and having an upper horizontal port-ion slidably engaged on the bolt, said standard bearing guide portions embracing the arms of the loop, the loop and standard being both formed with portions for biting into the bolster, and means for forcing the standard downward relative to the strap bolt for clamping a bolster between the bottom of the loop and the bottom portion of the standard.
