JOHN ANTHONY POWER, 0F BABYLON, NEW YORK.
EVAPORA'IING APPARATUS.
specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 4, 1912.
Application led'J'anuary 27, 1912. Serial No. 673,782.
To all whom 'it may concern: y
Be it known that I, JOHN A. POWER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Babylon, in the county of Suffolk and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved E vaporating Apparatus, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the inventionv is to provide a new and improved evaporating apparatus, more especially designed for evaporating salt or other water with a view of obtaining a supply of fresh water, and arranged to 'permit of conveniently rotating the steam heating device within the shell, to permit convenient access to the parts thereof, to
section; and Fig. 2 is an enlargedsectionaly side elevation of one 'of the connections between the heating device and the corresponding inlet or outlet pipe.
The shell Ay of the evapo'rating apparatus is provided at itsflower en d with a valve inlet B for filling the shell A with water to a. predetermined level, and the upper end of the' shell A is provided with an outlet C for conducting the vapors to a suitable condenser for condensing the vapor, with a The apparatus, D mounted to turn to permit of conveniently cleaning or repairing the same whenever it is desired-to do so, access being had to the device through a door E arranged on the shell A, as Vindicated in Fig. 1. The heating device D is mounted to turn on the steam inlet pipe F and the outlet pipe G, Jboth pipes F and G being A, provided with flanges F and G. for conveniently securing the pipes F and G in position on the shell A, the outer end of the pipe F being connected with'a suitable steam supply, and thev outer end of the pipe G vbeing connected with a suitable place of dischargel for the steam andthe water of condensation. The inner ends F2 and G2 of the pipes F and G are bent toward each other and are in axial alinement with each other Y in the .vertical .y center of the shell A, as plainly indicated in'Fig. 1,. so as to form pivots for the heating device' D to turn on, and at the same time .provide connections for 'the passage -of the steam from the pipe F 'to and through the heating device Dand to the outlet pipe' G. Y
The heating device D consists essentially of oppositely-dispo'sed manifolds -H and H connected with each .other by coilsI so that steam can pass from lthe pipe F into t-he manifold H, coils I, manifold/H and finally into the pipe G.- The steam during its pas- -sage through the coils I. heats the same and consequently the water contained in the shell A to properly evaporate the said water for the purpose previously mentioned. The
pivotal connections between the manifolds H and H with the ends F2and G2 ofthe pipes F an'd G are alike so that it suiices to describe but one in detail, special reference being had to Fig. 2. The middle port-ions of the manifolds H and H are provided with seats H2 in vertical alinement with each other and engaged by conical terminals'.
J connected by nipples vK with the corre- .sponding ends F2 and G2, and the said ter- 'minals J are provided with flanges J engaged bya coupling L screwing on the ext'eriorly-threaded seats H2'of the `manifolds H and H. Thus by the arrangement described a ground joint is providedA between the manifolds H and H and the angular ends F2 and G2 of the fixed pipes F and G to permit of'conveniently turning the heating device D within the shell A.
The coils I have ground joint connections with the manifolds H and H, and the said ground joint connections are similar to the ones above described in reference to the connections between the manifolds H, H and the pipes F and G, that is, each manifold H, H" is provided with reduced seatsH3 engaged by the conical terminals N of the coils -I.\ The said conical. terminals N areprovided with flanges N engaged by .couplings O screwing on thel seats H3.
By the arrangement described the coils I can be readily fastened in position on the manifolds H and H', and in case any one. `of the coils .1s worn out it can be readily replaced by a new one without disturbing the position of the remaining coils. It will .also be noticed that by having the ground AThe shell A is.provided with the usual gage P forobserving thelevel of the water in. the shell, A, the Water level being nor.'I mallyat'the lower half portion .of .the coils I while the upper Ahalf portion of the coils acts as a superheater. The upper end of the shellis provided withv a gage Q, and a safety valve R, and-the lower portion of the shell A is provided with a 'water draw-olf cock or a faucet S laol a valve drain T for draining the shell A of water whenever it is desiredl to doso. 1
Having thus described my invention, I claim 'as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. An evaporating apparatus, comprising a shell having a door, a water inlet, a vapor outlet,'steam inlet'and outlet pipes arranged within the shell and fixed t-hereto, and a` heating device mounted to turn on the inner ends of the said fixed steamfinlet andoutf let fpipes and connected therewith 4for the, circulation of steamthrough thesaid heats ing device.`
A2. An evaporating apparatus, comprising a shell, a'pair 'of oppositely-disposed manifolds Within the said shell, coils connecting Y the said manifolds with each other, inlet and outletpipes fixed in the said shell, and' ground joints in axial alinement and con-- necting the said manifolds v with the said fixed pipes. l .3. An evaporating apparatus, comprising a shell, oppositely-disposed manifolds within t-he said shell and provided at their middlewith seats, coils connecting the said manifolds with each other, inlet. and outlet pipes fixed in the said shell and having conical terminals engaging the said seats, and coupling members for fastening the said terminals in positionl on the seats. 1
4. An evaporating apparatus, comprising a shell, oppositely-.disposed manifolds .within the said shell andA provided at their middle with alined inlet 'and outlet seats'and with, reduced coil seats, coils intermediate the said manifolds and having conical terminals engaging the said reduced coil seats, coupling members for fastening the said terminals 1n position on the -said coil seats, inlet and outlet pipes iixed in the said shell and having conical terminals engaging the said inlet and outletl seats,-. and coupling members for fastening'the vsaid terminals of the inlet and outlet pipes in posit-ion on the said inlet and outlet seats.
In testimony whereof I have .signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
